On February 25, 2026, Quantum Surgical SAS, headquartered in France and focused on robot-assisted cancer treatment, announced the completion of its acquisition of NeuWave Medical, a developer of microwave ablation technology previously acquired by Johnson & Johnson.
01
The new company will become a leader in the interventional radiology industry.
Quantum Surgical initially reached an agreement with Johnson & Johnson to acquire NeuWave in September 2025, although the specific financial terms have not been disclosed. This transaction grants Quantum Surgical the intellectual property, brand, product registrations, capital manufacturing, operations, and inventory of NeuWave. Quantum Surgical stated that the acquisition aligns with its strategy to popularize robot-assisted tumor ablation therapy to reduce cancer mortality rates.
Quantum Surgical developed the Epione robotic-assisted percutaneous ablation system, which uses robotic arms, a navigation system, and cameras to insert needles through the skin into tumors for destruction. NeuWave, acquired by Ethicon under Johnson & Johnson a decade ago, provides clinically proven microwave ablation technology, offering doctors an efficient workflow in percutaneous ablation procedures with its ablation products.
Following this acquisition, the two companies will operate as subsidiaries of the newly established parent company, Precision IO Group Inc., which is led by CEO Kurt Azarbarzin. Azarbarzin brings extensive experience, having served as the CEO of EndoQuest Robotics, leading Verb Surgical, a joint venture between Johnson & Johnson and Google, and most recently acting as a partner at Frazier Healthcare Partners, where he provided advisory support to high-growth healthcare companies at critical development and commercialization stages.
The newly established Precision IO group aims to become a leader in the interventional radiology industry, focusing on precision and remote surgery. Quantum Surgical has experience in robotics and artificial intelligence, which can be combined with NeuWave Medical's minimally invasive ablation technology. NeuWave's products can be used independently or in conjunction with other therapies to improve patient outcomes. Epione has received CE certification for use in abdominal, thoracic, and musculoskeletal structures, and FDA approval for abdominal ablation.
Despite both companies aiming to advance cross-organizational improvements through complementary activities, they plan to operate independently to ensure a seamless user experience. This acquisition will enable Precision IO to further its remote interventional program, which aims to broaden the adoption of robot-assisted percutaneous surgeries. The company hopes to leverage Epione’s tools to collaborate with world-renowned experts on remote surgical pathway planning and outcome evaluations. In a press release, both companies stated that remote intervention benefits both patients and doctors. Patients can receive treatment from top physicians without traveling long distances, while doctors can expand their expertise, reach wider geographic areas, collaborate in real-time with global experts, and perform more precise surgeries.
Kurt Azarbarzin is highly confident about the future of the new company. He stated that Quantum Surgical and NeuWave Medical complement each other’s strengths and share a common vision for the future. He believes that their technologies, used either individually or in combination, have the potential to establish the company as an industry leader and transform the global landscape of cancer treatment. Drawing on his 40 years of experience in minimally invasive surgery, he firmly believes that artificial intelligence, robotics, and remote interventional technologies will revolutionize cancer treatment and interventional radiology.

Robots Compatible with Any Imaging System
Quantum Surgical, founded in 2017 by Bertin Nahum, is a next-generation surgical robotics startup headquartered in Montpellier, France. The company is developing next-generation intelligent tools for minimally invasive treatments, starting with interventional oncology.
Founder Bertin Nahum graduated from the National Institute of Applied Sciences (FR) and holds a Master’s degree in Robotics from Coventry University (UK) as well as an honorary Doctor of Technology degree. Prior to Quantum Surgical, Bertin NAHUM founded Medtech SA in 2002, which developed the Rosa® neurosurgery and spine surgery robotic systems. He took the company public in 2013 (IPO) and sold it to Zimmer Biomet in 2016.
Epione Robotic Platform Aims to Help Doctors Perform Safer and More Effective Percutaneous Ablation in the Abdomen, a Minimally Invasive Procedure that Inserts Needles Through the Skin into Tumors to Remove Them. It is the Only Interventional Oncology Robot Offering 6 Degrees of Freedom and Unprecedented Dexterity When Targeting Abdominal Tumors; The Company’s Future Goal is to Significantly Simplify Multi-Probe Procedures, Making the Treatment of Large Tumors More Predictable. It Ensures Reliability and Accuracy, Two Key Factors in Improving Current Practices and Reducing Variability. Epione Assists Practitioners in Managing Patients from Preoperative Planning to the End of Surgery.
Epione integrates cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence, primarily used for minimally invasive percutaneous interventional ablation surgeries in liver cancer. It assists doctors in precise treatment and improves patient outcomes, which is particularly significant for early-stage cancer patients. As an open robotic solution compatible with any imaging system, it allows doctors to choose any ablation technology (radiofrequency, microwave, cryoablation, irreversible electroporation), ensuring the right treatment method for each patient. When used with a CT scanner, the cart-based Epione system defines tumor margins using 2D and 3D images, synchronizes the robot’s movement with the patient’s breathing, and uses probes to accurately ablate tumor cells.
According to the company's official website, in April 2019, Quantum Surgical announced the establishment of a joint venture with Lifetech Scientific (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lifetech Scientific, and Ally Bridge Capital to promote the market access and commercialization of Epione in China.
As the majority shareholder of the joint venture, Lifetech Scientific is a leading enterprise in minimally invasive interventional medical devices for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular diseases. Established in Shenzhen, China, in 1999, the company was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2011. It ranks second globally in the market share of congenital heart disease occluders and holds a top position in cardiovascular interventional devices, with its aortic stent graft products ranking first among domestically produced brands in China.
Overall, Quantum Surgical has experience in robotics and artificial intelligence, which can be combined with NeuWave Medical's minimally invasive ablation technology. Will the newly established Precision IO group, as a result of this acquisition, be able to leverage the strengths of both companies to become a leader in the interventional radiology industry? Medical Device House will continue to follow up.
