AI's In-Depth Clinical Application in Liver Diagnosis and Treatment

Imaging diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and therapeutic efficacy assessment of liver cancer. However, due to the large number of abdominal organs and their complex anatomical structures, physicians often need to switch back and forth among liver images from different phases to conduct comprehensive and precise analysis and diagnosis. In this regard, Professor Song Bin, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Society of Radiology under the Chinese Medical Association and Director of the Department of Radiology at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, also pointed out during the Sensetime thematic forum that liver imaging presents significant challenges to diagnosis and treatment due to factors such as inconsistent scan slice thicknesses, diverse pathological presentations, and the phenomenon where different diseases exhibit similar imaging features. In practice, AI advancements in the field of liver disease diagnosis and treatment have largely remained limited to single-phase imaging and a narrow range of conditions, falling short of the requirements for clinical application.

SenseCare®️ Liver Intelligent Clinical Solution by Sensetime empowers healthcare professionals to leverage AI for the entire diagnostic and therapeutic workflow, from liver image interpretation to preoperative assessment. This solution demonstrates groundbreaking industry advantages through its integrated capabilities in fully automatic multi-phase registration, detection, analysis, and evaluation. It automatically aligns non-contrast and contrast-enhanced multi-phase CT images, precisely detects and segments focal lesions across multiple phases within seconds, and automatically calculates lesion severity and liver surface abnormalities. By providing rich qualitative and quantitative multidimensional analysis, it offers comprehensive assistance to radiologists during image interpretation. Furthermore, the solution features highly stable and smooth real-time rendering of liver structures, tumors, and blood vessels. This reduces the time required for complex 3D reconstruction from one hour to under one minute, enabling surgeons to more thoroughly evaluate surgical plans preoperatively and maximizing the clinical utility of imaging data.

Currently, the SenseCare®️ Liver Intelligent Clinical Solution has been deployed at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, seamlessly integrating into physicians’ image interpretation workflows. During the event, Professor Hu Hongjie, Director of the Department of Radiology at the hospital, stated, “Liver imaging diagnosis and treatment involve not only a heavy workload but also significant complexity. The application of AI technology not only reduces repetitive tasks for physicians but, more importantly, provides accurate alerts for key indicators, thereby lowering the risks of missed or misdiagnoses and accelerating the accumulation of clinical experience in liver disease imaging.” Furthermore, this solution has also been implemented at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, where it has pioneered comprehensive, end-to-end imaging management for liver diseases. This advancement better guides the treatment and prognosis of liver cancer patients, offering robust support in combating liver cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide.

AI Significantly Shortens the Diagnostic Process for Cardiovascular Diseases

Currently, the prevalence and mortality rates of cardiovascular disease in China remain on an upward trend. “As a critical tool for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) has been widely adopted in clinical practice due to its advantages such as convenience, speed, and non-invasiveness,” stated Professor Wang Yining, Deputy Director of the Department of Radiology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, during the Sensetime-themed forum. However, in current CTA examination workflows, physicians are required to perform complex post-processing reconstruction of CTA images. This reconstruction process demands extensive manual interaction, resulting in reconstruction times exceeding 20 minutes per case, which hampers the efficiency of image interpretation and report generation by physicians.

SenseCare®️, SenseTime’s intelligent clinical solution for cardiac coronary arteries, leverages CTA scan data to automatically perform quantitative grading tasks such as heart segmentation, coronary artery segmentation, centerline extraction, and plaque detection and classification. It offers flexible, interactive visualization of the heart and vessels from any angle using various reconstruction methods. Additionally, it automates film layout and generates structured reports, thereby enhancing physicians’ workflow efficiency through an industry-leading, highly efficient, fully automated process. Professor Wang Yining remarked, “Empowered by AI, the entire CTA workflow has achieved higher-quality, fully automated processing, enabling physicians to make more comprehensive and efficient diagnoses. This truly enhances the capacity for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases in underdeveloped regions and primary healthcare institutions facing shortages of medical resources.”

As one of the first hospitals to implement the SenseCare®️ Intelligent Clinical Solution for Cardiac Coronary Arteries, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (Changzhou No. 2 People's Hospital) has achieved a significant improvement in CTA interpretation efficiency. During the event, Professor Pan Changjie, Director of the Departments of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine at the hospital, stated that previously, diagnosing a single coronary artery case—from image interpretation by physicians to report generation—typically took 15–20 minutes. After integrating this product into the interpretation workflow, the entire process, from data loading to final film printing, now takes only 3–5 minutes. Based on the hospital’s monthly volume of 400–500 coronary artery patients, this translates to nearly 100 hours saved per month, thereby comprehensively enhancing the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment for coronary artery disease and alleviating physicians’ workload.
