Zepp and World Sleep Society Release 'Global Sleep Insights in the Post-Pandemic Era' Ahead of IPO

Dec 10, 2020 11:33 CST Updated 11:33

Recently, Zepp, a professional digital health management brand, jointly released the research report “Global Sleep Observations in the Post-Pandemic Era” with the World Sleep Society. Based on independent surveys of 12,000 respondents from the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Thailand, this study aims to present changes in people’s sleep patterns under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, explore the causes of sleep disturbances, and identify methods to improve sleep quality.

Research findings indicate that in the post-pandemic era, there is a widespread desire for increased sleep duration. Anxiety persists from daytime into the night, leading to diminished sleep quality, which in turn affects next-day functioning, thereby creating a vicious cycle. The study further reveals that sleep habits have shifted alongside pandemic-induced changes in work and lifestyle patterns, with listening to music and meditation emerging as the most prevalent sleep aids.

What Keeps the World Awake at Night?

Respondents believe that external disturbances are depriving them of sleep. Research shows that respondents in Thailand reported the highest prevalence, at approximately 50%, followed by Germany (38%), the United States (37.8%), and the United Kingdom (37.4%). Respondents in Italy and Spain were relatively more optimistic, with rates of 18.5% and 18.2%, respectively.

The pandemic has also affected people’s sleep patterns. More than one-third of respondents reported going to bed later than usual, while approximately 20% said they found it more difficult to fall asleep. The survey revealed that, during the pandemic, respondents’ average nightly sleep duration decreased by 2.7 hours, with Thai respondents experiencing the most significant reduction, at 4.5 hours.

What Exactly Keeps People Awake at Night? Forty-three percent of respondents attributed their poor sleep quality to work-related stress, while 40% cited financial anxiety. Additionally, 23% indicated that insomnia might be linked to concerns about the pandemic.

The primary factors affecting sleep vary across countries: nearly half of respondents in the United States and Spain attributed their lost sleep to the rise of technology, particularly social media; whereas 52% of Thai respondents and 48% of Italian respondents believed it was due to overthinking and excessive anxiety. In Germany, 46% of respondents cited grueling and exhausting work as the cause, while nearly half of British respondents indicated that the bleak global situation was keeping them awake.

Improving Sleep with Wearable Devices

People are also actively taking measures to improve their sleep, including listening to relaxing music, avoiding caffeine intake in the evening, and engaging in reading and meditation before bedtime. With the development of smart wearable technology, many people have begun wearing smart bands or watches with sleep-tracking features. Among these respondents, 60% reported that they discovered their own sleep deprivation through the use of wearable devices. Wearable devices can help respondents calculate precise sleep duration and other metrics, thereby assisting them in improving their sleep patterns.

In response, Dr. Lourdes DelRosso, Co-Chair of World Sleep Day for the World Sleep Society, stated that healthy sleep comprises three components: sufficient sleep duration; sleep continuity (i.e., whether sleep is excessively fragmented); and adequate sleep depth to allow for physical restoration. By tracking their sleep, users can gain a better understanding of these three aspects, thereby helping to improve their sleep quality.

As a leader in the field of personal health, Zepp’s products and initiatives are designed to help users gain better control over their sleep. This August, the newly launched Zepp E series smartwatches leverage advanced data analytics capabilities and an AI algorithm framework to analyze and provide early warnings regarding users’ health status. In particular, its powerful sleep tracking technology monitors light sleep, deep sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and wakefulness, while also tracking daytime naps of up to 20 minutes. Additionally, it provides an overall sleep score to help users improve their sleep and respiratory quality.

Improving Sleep Through Personalized Lullabies

Music is also a potent remedy for aiding sleep, with 89% of respondents believing that listening to calming music before bedtime helps them fall asleep. Survey results show that in Italy, respondents preferred Chopin’s Nocturne No. 2, while in the other five countries surveyed, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata was the most popular pre-sleep choice. In terms of music genre, respondents in Germany and Thailand indicated a preference for pop music before bed, whereas those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy opted for classical music.

Zepp also places great emphasis on the role of music in facilitating sleep. Recently, Zepp collaborated with Swedish creative experts to launch an experimental website called the Zepp Lullaby Generator, which creates personalized lullabies tailored to users’ sleep patterns. Users can accesshttps://zepplullaby.com, users can customize personalized sleep-aid music for free based on their own sleep patterns. Existing Zepp smartwatch users can authorize the use of their sleep data to allow the system to automatically generate personalized sleep-aid music, while non-Zepp users can achieve personalization by answering a series of questions about their sleep habits.
