Traditional Chinese Medicine Goes Digital: Entering an Era of Applied Innovation. Recently, the Tianchi Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Big Data Competition, which lasted for over two months, officially concluded. WeDoctor’s Huatuo Cloud was crowned champion of the Smart TCM Application Innovation Challenge, recognized for its innovative practices in the digitization, intelligence, and disease-specific specialization of TCM data, as well as its outstanding contributions to the field of traditional Chinese medicine.

The Tianchi Traditional Chinese Medicine Big Data Competition, hosted by the Jiangxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Ganjiang New Area Administrative Committee, attracted 4,167 teams from 13 countries and regions worldwide. The competition featured two tracks: an Application Track and an Algorithm Track, aiming to select outstanding innovative application solutions in the fields of artificial intelligence and big data for traditional Chinese medicine, and to establish a nationally leading hub for AI in traditional Chinese medicine.
The Digitalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine Is Becoming the Mainstream for Its Inheritance, Innovation, and Development in the New EraRelying on digital technologies such as the internet, big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, innovative models represented by WeDoctor’s Huatuo Cloud are actively exploring integrated development with TCM services, contributing technological strength to promote the inheritance and development of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
It is understood that WeDoctor is the only digital health platform in the industry covering the entire “Internet + Healthcare” industrial chain. Its subsidiary, Huatuo Cloud, focuses on the digital development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). On one hand, it builds a standardized and intelligent system for TCM big data to promote the digital inheritance of expertise from renowned TCM masters; on the other hand, it establishes a closed-loop service process across the entire workflow, facilitating the grassroots implementation of innovative services such as regional TCM clouds and smart TCM pharmacies.
It is understood that WeDoctor’s Huatuo Cloud employs multi-dimensional algorithms to synthesize thousands of TCM syndrome patterns, drug contraindications, and prescriptions, along with tens of thousands of knowledge entries, into a cloud-based solution covering disease syndromes, therapeutic methods, body constitutions, prescriptions, and herb compatibility. This solution, known as the “Xuanhutai TCM Intelligent Auxiliary Diagnosis and Treatment System,” assists primary care TCM practitioners in prescribing.
Building on the digitization and intelligent transformation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Huatuo Cloud has continuously deepened its collaborations with renowned TCM practitioners. By leveraging big data analytics for specific diseases, it “replicates” the expertise of TCM masters. Examples include the “Intelligent Expert System for Mongolian Medicine in Thyroid Diseases,” which provides intelligent diagnosis for 49 types of thyroid disorders and offers over 80 standardized treatment prescriptions, and the “Intelligent Auxiliary Diagnosis and Treatment System for Urolithiasis,” which integrates 352 prescription subtypes and 1,408 medicinal ingredients from the Changgen Stone Therapy. These innovations have realized intelligent, disease-specific precision treatment.
These digital tools are becoming one of the key means to enhance the capacity of primary-level Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services and advance the strategy of “bringing TCM to the grassroots and integrating TCM into grassroots healthcare.” To date, the Huatuo Cloud Platform has connected more than 1,900 medical institutions across China and has assisted in prescribing over 4.52 million formulas, making it the most widely applied “Cloud-based TCM Brain” globally.
As the champion of this application competition, WeDoctor Huatuo Cloud continues to promote the implementation of integrated online and offline Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services at the grassroots level. Leveraging its “Regional Smart Cloud Pharmacy Platform” and smart TCM pharmacies, WeDoctor Huatuo Cloud integrates regional TCM resources to enable hospital prescribing, centralized prescription review, unified dispensing, and consolidated delivery. It also advances standardized drug formularies, centralized prescription management and auditing, as well as consolidated herbal preparation, decoction, packaging, and logistics distribution. This approach bridges the “last mile” of TCM service delivery, creating a closed-loop healthcare model where patients can receive consultations at community hospitals and have their medications delivered directly to their homes.
Currently, WeDoctor’s Huatuo Cloud has built regional TCM cloud platforms for more than ten counties and cities across China, including Jiaxing, Lishui, and Yiwu, and serves as the operational support platform for Zhejiang Province’s TCM informatization projects. This year, WeDoctor Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Zhejiang Houda, under which both parties will jointly develop “Smart TCM Pharmacies” nationwide. This initiative aims to promote end-to-end digital transformation covering online consultations, follow-up prescription issuance, prescription circulation, intelligent herbal decoction, and home delivery, thereby providing patients with one-stop TCM services.

“Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) must focus on the ‘meta’ aspects of data units and the ‘source’ of data origins, leveraging data to drive the digital transformation of TCM,” said Dr. Ni Rong, Senior Vice President of WeDoctor Group and CEO of Huatuo Cloud. He stated that the future digitalization of TCM should prioritize three key initiatives: providing physicians with scientific and effective digital tools, building an industry-shared internet platform, and collaborating across the entire sector to promote the global sharing of TCM under the Belt and Road Initiative.
