2020 was an extraordinary year. The sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the world, transformed China, and altered the lives of every individual. During this period, Taikang Insurance Group proactively assumed its corporate responsibilities, launching the first wave of private-sector aid to Wuhan and joining the national frontline forces in the fight against the epidemic. In the face of complex circumstances exacerbated by the pandemic, Taikang accelerated its digital transformation, enhanced operational efficiency, and strengthened synergies, achieving comprehensive success across its insurance, asset management, and healthcare and eldercare segments. The comprehensive health industry ecosystem that Taikang has been strategically developing demonstrated remarkable vitality and resilience, becoming deeply integrated into the public’s health and wealth management lifestyles.

A company’s value lies in addressing major societal challenges. In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Taikang donated cash and kind totaling over RMB 100 million and established the “Taikang Public Health and Epidemic Prevention Fund” with a total scale of RMB 200 million. Taikang Tongji (Wuhan) Hospital voluntarily stepped forward to join the battle, opened ahead of schedule, and collaborated with the PLA-supported medical teams to treat 2,060 COVID-19 patients. It was honored as an “Advanced Collective in China’s Fight Against the COVID-19 Pandemic,” becoming the sole representative from the financial sector. Committed to caring for employees, protecting customers, and giving back to society, Taikang pioneered the “Love Insurance” public welfare protection plan, which included coverage for COVID-19-related risks. The plan covered nearly 17 million healthcare workers and customers, with all underwriting profits donated to the Taikang Public Health Fund. Seven operating Taikang Community senior living communities served as safe havens, achieving zero infections among both staff and residents.

In early 2020, Chen Dongsheng, founder, chairman, and CEO of Taikang Insurance Group, proposed the “Taikang Solution for the Longevity Era,” closely linking Taikang’s business practices with the future development of human society to meet people’s three major needs: longevity, health, and prosperity. Taikang has tightly integrated its healthcare industry footprint with philanthropy, forming a horizontal-and-vertical “T”-shaped business-for-good model. By the end of 2020, Taikang achieved dual growth in operating revenue and assets under management; the scale of pension fund management increased substantially, exceeding RMB 440 billion, while the number of high-net-worth clients served by the Group surpassed 100,000. Taikang also launched the Youth Edition of its “Happiness Promise” product, further enriching its lifecycle-oriented health and wealth planning offerings within the existing Happiness Promise portfolio. The Taikang Community senior living network expanded into five additional cities, bringing its nationwide presence to 22 cities, with seven communities open and operational, serving more than 4,000 residents. The concept of purchasing Taikang insurance products in one’s younger years to accumulate retirement funds, and then moving into a Taikang Community in later life to enjoy senior care services, has been successfully implemented and is now flourishing, becoming a model for a new way of aging in China.

In the healthcare sector, Taikang has fully leveraged its core insurance strengths to continuously expand its health insurance offerings. The launch of the “Family Care Agreement (Grand Health Edition)” insurance product plan provides the public with comprehensive family health protection services characterized by “full coverage, 24/7 availability, and whole-disease-course management.” Post-pandemic, Taikang Tongji (Wuhan) Hospital reopened after extensive renovations, achieving operational performance that exceeded expectations, while Taikang Xianlin Gulou Hospital in Nanjing optimized its operations and improved efficiency. To date, Taikang has established five integrated medical, educational, and research centers in key regions across China, with a planned capacity of over 5,000 hospital beds, covering the Yangtze River Delta, Central China, Southwest China, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Taikang Bybo Dental has turned challenges into opportunities by transforming against the trend and creating a closed-loop “Insurance + Dental Care” model to safeguard the oral health of the Chinese population. Meanwhile, Taikang has also made extensive investments in healthcare enterprises such as Sanbo Brain Hospital and Donglei Brain Hospital, committed to providing high-quality and diverse healthcare options.

Taikang has always adhered to serving the public and contributing to society, striving to become a core backbone enterprise in major livelihood projects. As of 2020, Taikang had cumulatively served 356 million individual customers and over 420,000 corporate clients, with government-related services reaching 330 million person-times. Among these, Taikang operated long-term care insurance pilot programs in 34 cities, firmly ranking among the industry leaders. Taikang enhances customer experience through technology; its “Taikang Life” APP provides one-stop services, with registered users exceeding 7 million. Since its establishment, Taikang and its founder Chen Dongsheng have collectively contributed over RMB 900 million to philanthropy, building three major charitable pillars: eldercare support, public health, and contemporary art. According to disclosures from the Taikang Yicai Foundation, its flagship project, the “Yicai Thousand Homes Initiative,” has empowered 101 elderly care institutions, benefiting 32,000 seniors across 28 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions.

Taikang’s business is closely intertwined with human life and health, and its commercial aspiration is to serve the well-being of the general public. The year 2021 marks both the 25th anniversary of Taikang’s founding and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of China. Taikang will continue to adhere to specialized, market-oriented, and standardized operations, leveraging market-economy approaches to realize the noble ideal of serving the people wholeheartedly.
