ShuKang and Changfeng Pharma Launch 'COVID-19 Public Welfare Initiative' Amid Resurgence of Coronavirus

Feb 01, 2021 09:00 CST Updated 09:00

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the cumulative number of confirmed cases worldwide has exceeded 100 million, with daily new infections still rising by hundreds of thousands. Different variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been identified globally, and its continuous mutation has further complicated worldwide pandemic control efforts.

Although some countries have already developed COVID-19 vaccines, there is still no detailed data to support whether the vaccines are effective against mutant viruses or how long the preventive effect will last. It is even more impossible to achieve universal vaccination in a short period of time!

What Can Ordinary People Do to Combat the Novel Coronavirus in This Severe Situation?

Remote Monitoring in Exercise Rehabilitation Achieves Efficacy Comparable to Fangcang Hospitals

In April 2020, under the leadership of Dr. Li Jian’an, an International Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and Director of the Center for Rehabilitation Medicine at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Shukang and Changfeng Pharmaceutical jointly conducted a “Study on the Efficacy of Exercise Rehabilitation Under Remote Monitoring for Discharged COVID-19 Patients.” Patients in the app-based experimental group wore smart hardware devices and received quantified exercise therapy under the monitoring of the Shukang app, while those in the conventional exercise group were instructed by physicians on precautions for their exercise prescriptions and performed exercises independently.

After 6 weeks, data comparison showed:

The mean 6-minute walk distance in the APP group was 588.4 meters, approaching the level observed in healthy age-matched individuals (624 meters); significant improvements were noted in pulmonary function tests—FEV1/FVC (%)—and lower-extremity muscular endurance.

The mean 6-minute walk test distance in the conventional exercise group was 517 meters, with an improvement of only 17 meters; pulmonary function tests showed a mean decline.

* 6-Minute Walk Test: The distance a patient can walk at their maximum tolerable speed within six minutes; this is an exercise test used to assess functional status in patients with moderate-to-severe cardiopulmonary diseases. Pulmonary Function Test - FEV1/FVC (%): One of the essential examinations for respiratory diseases. Improving lower limb muscle endurance helps enhance cardiopulmonary endurance and improve daily functioning.

Studies have shown that discharged patients who undergo quantified exercise rehabilitation therapy can basically restore their physical condition to a healthy state.

The study results exceeded expectations, with Professor Li Jian’an even stating at the project closure meeting that the efficacy of exercise rehabilitation under Shukang’s remote monitoring was “comparable to that of cabin hospitals.”

“COVID-19 Public Welfare Initiative” Officially Launched

Boosting immunity is the most direct and effective way to prevent COVID-19. The initial “Rapid Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia” stated: “Individuals with compromised immune function, such as the elderly, pregnant and postpartum women, or those with hepatic or renal dysfunction, tend to experience more rapid disease progression and greater severity.”

It is evident that individuals with robust immune systems face a lower risk of contracting viral infectious diseases and have a higher probability of recovery post-infection. As cardiorespiratory fitness is a critical indicator of physiological function, enhanced cardiorespiratory endurance correlates with improved immunity and greater resistance to viral pathogens.

Therefore, Shukang partnered with Changfeng Pharmaceutical to launch the “COVID-19 Public Welfare Program,” offering free access to individuals in need worldwide. The program aims to improve cardiopulmonary endurance and enhance immune function among patients with mild to moderate COVID-19, discharged COVID-19 patients, susceptible populations, high-risk contacts, and elderly individuals and children with compromised immunity.

COVID-19 Public Welfare Program: Free Access for All New Participants

At the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak early this year, Lei Zhen, CEO of Shukang, conceived the idea of launching a public welfare initiative. Later, the results of the clinical study on “Rehabilitation of Patients Discharged After COVID-19” strengthened his resolve to pursue this endeavor.

Shukang is a personalized home-based rehabilitation therapy for COVID-19 that has been clinically proven effective, and it is the first “patented digital therapeutic” approved by China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). Centered on remote intelligent assessments of cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, and nutritional status, and combined with wearable devices and scientifically formulated prepackaged medical foods, the program can be easily implemented at home, helping to reduce incidence, hospitalization, and readmission rates. Changfeng Pharmaceutical, a domestic pharmaceutical company specializing in inhalation formulations and dedicated to respiratory research, has once again joined forces with Shukang to launch the “COVID-19 Public Welfare Initiative.”

Shukang’s remote home-based rehabilitation model enables patients to complete all exercise therapy at home. As part of the “COVID-19 Public Welfare Initiative,” the exercise regimen has been adjusted to provide the general public with scientifically guided exercise methods free of charge. (The existing exercise protocols for current patients remain unchanged.)

Shukang’s long-standing users receive personalized rehabilitation guidance from dedicated physicians; however, new users who have not previously used the Shukang Pro app are eligible to participate in the “COVID-19 Public Welfare Program.”

After joining the "COVID-19 Public Welfare Program," users can begin an intelligent assessment that includes questionnaires, cardiorespiratory fitness tests, and physical function tests. Upon completion, they will receive a personalized exercise prescription detailing exercise type, intensity, duration, and frequency. Users need only follow the exercise videos for training; connecting smart hardware devices can further enhance workout effectiveness.

The novel coronavirus poses a challenge to all of humanity; together, the world must strengthen physical fitness, resist the virus, and overcome the pandemic.
