Penguin Almond Group Acquires Controlling Stake in QuanKang Medical, Partnering with Shanghai Renji Hospital to Build Premium Primary Care Services
On February 4, 2021, Penguin Almond Group announced that it had acquired a controlling stake in Shanghai Quankang Medical Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Quankang Medical”), becoming its largest shareholder. Moving forward, the Group will work closely with its joint venture partner and strategic collaborator, Shanghai Renji Hospital, to foster deep cooperation in areas such as sharing expert resources, patient services, and complementary professional training. Together, they will strive to strengthen the high-end general practice sector and actively establish Quankang Medical as a benchmark for internationally standardized medical services.

QuanKang Medical was jointly established by the Hong Kong-based Pan-Asia Medical Investment Group and Renji Hospital. Founded in 2005, it is among the first batch of Sino-foreign joint venture medical institutions to be officially licensed in Shanghai. Since its inception, QuanKang Medical has provided comprehensive one-stop healthcare and diagnostic and therapeutic services to both domestic and international residents in Shanghai, covering general practice and 22 specialized disciplines. It has developed six key specialty departments: Cardiology, Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. Furthermore, QuanKang Medical is one of the few foreign-funded clinics in Shanghai officially authorized to administer vaccinations.
Currently, Quankang Medical operates two premium medical centers in central Shanghai, located in the Jing’an Temple business district and the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone, respectively. Its international team of physicians comprises nearly 60 distinguished doctors from more than 10 countries, serving over 30,000 visits annually from clients covered by commercial insurance, high-net-worth individuals, and corporate accounts.
The strategic alliance between Shanghai Renji Hospital, a renowned public Grade 3A tertiary hospital, and Penguin Almond, the core healthcare initiative of Tencent Medical Health, stands out as a major highlight of this collaboration and represents an innovative advancement in the model of privately operated medical services.
Penguin Almond will fully integrate Quankang Medical into its proprietary outpatient network, connecting various online and offline resource platforms to accelerate ecosystem development. Leveraging Renji Hospital’s advantages and professional strengths in clinical technology, expert resources, management experience, and service standards, the two parties will jointly establish high-end medical centers characterized by resource sharing and synergistic efficiency through an innovative “Healthcare + Internet + Insurance” model, injecting new momentum into the development of Quankang Medical. It is reported that Dr. Jin Tianren, the former Chairman, plans to contribute over one million yuan to establish the “Renji Hospital Medical Staff Exchange and Training Fund in Hong Kong,” dedicated to cultivating healthcare professionals.
