Due to the lack of standardized development and management, the chaotic medical aesthetics market has become daunting, creating an urgent need for a professional and authoritative whitelist of physicians to guide consumers in making scientific and rational decisions. In 2020, the first authoritative ranking of medical aesthetics practitioners in China’s industry—the SoYoung Emerald Doctor List—was launched. It has been progressively refined through rigorous assessment across 101 sub-dimensions under three major criteria: technical expertise, aesthetic judgment, and service quality, with multi-tiered evaluations conducted by two panels of experts specializing in professional techniques and aesthetics.
In March 2021, the SoYoung Emerald Doctor List finally achieved full coverage of physicians across all aesthetic medicine specialties, officially unveiling a roster that brings together China’s top medical aesthetic practitioners. It is reported that the panel of technical expert judges for the 2021 SoYoung Emerald Doctor List includes representatives from two major public authoritative associations in China’s medical aesthetics sector: the Chinese Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Chinese Society of Plastic Surgery under the Chinese Medical Association, and the Chinese Society of Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetology under the Chinese Medical Association. The technical review committee has added several new members, including Li Shirong, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetology; Jiang Hua, President of the Chinese Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Luan Jie, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Plastic Surgery; Yang Rongya, Chairman-Elect of the Chinese Society of Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetology; Gao Jianhua, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Huang Jinlong, Director of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and Tian Weidong, Assistant to the Dean of West China School of Stomatology, Sichuan University, and Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Luan Jie, Chair of the Chinese Society of Plastic Surgery under the Chinese Medical Association and a technical expert judge for the So-Young Emerald Doctor List, believes that the list can encourage practitioners to become trustworthy medical aesthetic doctors who are skilled, ethical, and valuable. Tian Weidong, Assistant Dean of West China School of Stomatology at Sichuan University, Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and also a technical expert judge for the So-Young Emerald Doctor List, stated that the development of the industry requires highlighting the status of compliant and outstanding medical aesthetic doctors. Implementing high-standard screening to drive out inferior practitioners with superior ones is reshaping the industrial logic of the medical aesthetics sector, and So-Young has provided a fresh perspective on this matter.
Regarding the aesthetic review committee, the SoGreen Emerald Doctor List has once again invited a panel of aesthetic experts, including the Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar China, founders of renowned haute couture brands, and celebrated stylists, to evaluate and score participating physicians from an aesthetic perspective. The committee includes Sha Xiaoli, Executive Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar China; Ma Yanli, Founder of the Maryma Haute Couture brand; Tang Yi, celebrity stylist; Jing Jing, Executive Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar Jewelry; Dong Gang, Beauty Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar China; Wei Tian, Fashion Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s Bazaar China; and Wu Zongyang, Beauty Director of Harper’s Bazaar China.
The 2021 So-Young Emerald Doctor List covers nearly all currently popular medical aesthetic procedures, including rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, fat grafting, body contouring, facial contouring, breast augmentation, cosmetic dentistry, intimate rejuvenation, scar removal, hyaluronic acid treatments, skin rejuvenation, and hair transplantation.
Comprehensive category coverage enhances the reference value of SoYoung’s Emerald Doctor List for medical aesthetics. Meanwhile, this marks a significant milestone in the productization of decision-support tools driven by the list, empowering beauty seekers with more convenient, efficient, scientific, and safe consumer decision-making products.
Huang Jinlong, Director of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Jiangsu Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a technical expert judge for the SoYoung Emerald Doctor List, pointed out that the medical aesthetics industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with China’s vast population expected to increasingly participate in this market. The SoYoung Emerald Doctor List has pioneered a sustainable development path, offering high-quality solutions for both promising young physicians and individuals seeking aesthetic treatments by helping them identify accredited institutions and qualified professionals.
In addition to adding technical expert judges, the 2021 So-Young Emerald Doctor List also required participating doctors to provide case follow-up materials. It was learned that for one of the aesthetic effect evaluations, the follow-up cases must be medical case photos taken by the customers of the selected surgical cases at the hospital on the 7th and 30th days respectively, tracking the recovery effects without using filters or beauty enhancements. "Some doctors were unable to participate with complete information due to missing follow-up cases, which was quite regrettable."
Cultivating talent requires the accumulation of time, and this is especially true for qualified aesthetic medicine physicians. According to statistics, a total of 3,278 licensed physicians registered for the 2021 SoYoung Emerald Doctor List. After rigorous screening, 252 physicians were ultimately selected, with an average of 16 years of professional experience. Among these 252 high-quality physicians, 146 held associate senior professional titles, accounting for 60%.
Notably, among the 252 physicians featured on this list, 64 are women, accounting for 25%. In the four categories of cosmetic dentistry, aesthetic dermatology, intimate plastic surgery, and hyaluronic acid treatments, female physicians comprise more than 50% of those listed. Workplace gender issues have long attracted significant attention, and this data from the 2021 SoYoung Emerald Physician List signals the rising prominence of female practitioners in the medical aesthetics industry.
With the increase in the number of candidates, the 2021 SoYoung Emerald Doctor List covered a broader range of cities, including 20 cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Qingdao, Xiamen, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Among these, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai had the highest number of listed doctors.
Liu Rong, Vice President of So-Young Inc., recalled: “The Emerald List accounts for a relatively high proportion among doctors in the Hangzhou medical aesthetics market, and both physicians and institutions attach great importance to this ranking. Doctors from large, medium, and small-sized institutions have all inquired about participation in the list selection. In fact, due to joint applications by doctors from multiple institutions and strong demand for inclusion, cities in other parts of Zhejiang Province—such as Ningbo and Wenzhou—that initially did not have open registration channels for the Emerald Doctor List were ultimately included.”
It is worth noting that, compared with previous selections, the 2021 So-Young Emerald Doctor List saw significant changes in its applicant pool. “More young doctors with distinctive technical skills and strong aesthetic sensibilities have applied,” said Liu Rong. This shift not only reflects the rapid professional growth of young physicians but also indicates that the list’s coverage of the medical community is becoming increasingly extensive.
Since its launch in July 2020, the So-Young Emerald Doctor List has adhered to the philosophy of “Selecting the Best Doctors for Aesthetic Excellence,” providing a platform for distinguished physicians to showcase their expertise and offering an authoritative reference for aesthetic medicine decision-making by beauty seekers.
As stated by Gao Jianhua, Vice President of the Aesthetic Medicine and Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and a technical expert judge for the SoYoung Emerald Doctor List: “The essence of medicine is a fundamental attribute of aesthetic medicine. The original intention behind the SoYoung Emerald Doctor List is to help the aesthetic medicine industry never deviate from this attribute, striving to create a healthy, correct, and high-quality medical service environment for those seeking aesthetic improvements.”
