Global medical technology giant BD, together with its upstream and downstream partners, made its appearance at the 2021 China International Medical Equipment Fair (hereinafter referred to as “CMEF”), jointly exploring the new policies, new technologies, new healthcare models, new generations, and new ecosystems facing the industry under the new circumstances. Guests participating in BD’s themed forum session, “Insights into the New Future of Interventional Medicine,” included Professor Cai Jiangnan, founder and executive chairman of the Shanghai Chuangqi Health Development Research Institute and an expert in health economics and health policy; Song Chengli, professor at the School of Medical Instruments and Food Engineering, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and director of the Shanghai Chuangqi Health Development Research Institute; Fu Weiguo, Director of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University; Li Wentao, Director of the Department of Interventional Therapy at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center; Jia Fangren, Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group; Li Wengang, Managing Director at Yunfeng Capital; Zheng Yunsheng, Co-founder and CFO of Ruihua Kangyuan; Mo Ruoli, General Manager of Sonoscape Medical Corp.; Liu Jing, General Manager of the Cardiovascular and Mature Products Division of Sanofi China; and Jia Hongshuo, General Manager of Ping An Dianchuang Leasing, among other distinguished representatives from industry, academia, research, healthcare, and investment sectors.
“During the 14th Five-Year Plan period,” developments in the medical technology sector are not only crucial to public health and ensuring access to medical care, but also represent a key aspect of accelerating the construction of a new dual-circulation development pattern driven by innovation. In response to the “Healthy China 2030” national strategy’s call to “strengthen medical technology innovation,” BD has actively promoted research and innovation collaborations with universities, research institutes, and healthcare institutions, deepening its local innovation strategy. From establishing a local value chain to achieving annual approvals of over 30 patents in R&D innovation, BD’s locally developed products and those created through external collaborations accounted for more than 3% of sales share in FY21. This figure is projected to exceed 10% by 2025, at which point cumulative contributions from local R&D and external collaborations will account for over 20% of BD China’s business growth.
Deng Jianmin, Senior Vice President of BD Worldwide and General Manager of Greater China, stated at the forum: “BD has always adhered to the ‘In China, For China’ philosophy. In recent years, we have established a localized value chain spanning R&D, manufacturing, and supply chain management. We are both beneficiaries of this process and committed to further exploring localized innovation in the future. By collaborating with external partners and empowering stakeholders across the industry value chain, we aim to jointly build a healthcare ecosystem in China, lead the value-driven development of the health industry, and benefit more healthcare professionals and patients.”

At this year’s CMEF, the BD exhibition area featured four simulated in-hospital scenario spaces themed around “New Interventional Ecosystem – Smart Hospital – Precision Diagnostics – ICU Safety Care.” Making their refreshed debut were the Kiestra InoquLA fully automated microbiology specimen processing system; the FACSLyric and FACSDuet, representing a new era of fully automated, standardized flow cytometry laboratories; and the Arctic Sun target temperature management system, which precisely controls core body temperature. These innovations collectively showcased BD’s localized innovative solutions that leverage world-leading healthcare technologies and concepts, tailored to local clinical scenarios and unmet medical needs. The solutions address multiple dimensions, including improving patient clinical outcomes and experiences, safeguarding the safety of patients and healthcare workers, controlling overall healthcare costs, and enhancing access to high-quality care.

BD’s Peripheral Vascular Intervention Innovative Solution—Rotarex Rotational Catheter and Its Associated Power Unit—Makes Debut at the ExhibitionMaking its first appearance at the exhibition, BD’s innovative solution for peripheral vascular intervention—the Rotarex rotational catheter and its associated power unit—drew widespread attention on the opening day. Compared with traditional therapies such as open thrombectomy and catheter-directed thrombolysis, Rotarex employs a purely mechanical approach to efficiently remove intravascular embolic material while simultaneously treating concomitant arterial plaque. It boasts three significant advantages: “no need for pharmacological adjuncts, no hemolytic reaction, and no time limit for use.” By enabling one-stop thrombus removal, plaque debulking, and revascularization, Rotarex is poised to usher in a procedural “iteration” in the field of peripheral vascular therapy.
During this CMEF forum, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), in partnership with HiMed Med-Innovation Camp—which boasts extensive experience in medical innovation incubation—officially launched the BD Innovation Incubation Program. By introducing Stanford Biodesign, an internationally advanced innovation theoretical framework, and leveraging a top-tier mentor team, open and diverse collaboration models, and robust shared service resources, the program provides one-stop incubation support for early-stage medical innovation projects in the interventional field. This support includes early-stage guidance, funding, and resource matching, aiming to enhance the quality of medical technological innovation in China and accelerate the commercial translation of mature innovative research achievements.

The launch of the “Medical Innovation Camp” also marks a new phase in BD’s local innovation strategy. By evolving from establishing a local value chain to cultivating an open innovation ecosystem, and with the participation of more external partners, BD will lead China’s healthcare industry toward broader and more robust innovative development.
