China Youth Daily Online News (Reporter Xia Jin from China Youth Daily · China Youth Network) — On March 21, the first systematic research project in China focusing on the quality of life and self-management status of patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), titled *The Blue Book on Quality of Life of Chinese CML Patients*, was launched in Beijing. This project aims to fill the gap in related research in China and promote the transition of CML disease management from "disease control" to "quality of life improvement."

Epidemiological data shows that the annual incidence rate of CML in China is 0.39/100,000 to 0.55/100,000, with a median age of onset between 45 and 50 years, which is younger compared to patients in Europe and America. This characteristic determines that Chinese patients have a more urgent need for long-term survival, quality of life, and returning to normal social life. Against this background, the treatment goals for CML in China are continuously evolving. The latest edition of the "Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (2025 Edition)" explicitly states that while controlling disease progression, reducing treatment toxicity and improving patients' quality of life should also be considered, enabling more patients to achieve "functional cure."

This Blue Paper focuses on "anchoring patients' quality of life, exploring the logic of diagnosis and treatment cognition and practice, and highlighting unmet needs in diseases." The content covers sections such as the current status of CML diagnosis and treatment in China, characteristics of the patient population and disease awareness, self-management behaviors, and patient-reported outcomes. Through nationwide physician surveys, in-depth interviews with key experts, and multi-dimensional data analysis, the project systematically reviews clinical diagnosis and treatment practices for CML and the current state of patient self-management in China, forming a report with both academic value and practical guidance.

"One of the chief editors of the Blue Book on Quality of Life for Chinese CML Patients, Professor Jiang Qian from the Hematology Department of Peking University People's Hospital, stated: 'With the help of second-generation TKIs (tyrosine kinase inhibitors, a class of targeted therapeutic drugs that inhibit abnormally activated tyrosine kinase activity and block cancer cell signaling), CML has entered an era where it can be managed as a chronic disease over the long term. However, clinical practice still faces challenges such as insufficient patient awareness, low adherence, and uneven regional diagnosis and treatment. The Blue Book project aims to systematically review current diagnostic and treatment practices and the status of patient management through a survey of hematologists across China, providing key evidence-based support for formulating standardized CML management strategies suited to China’s national conditions.'"

This event was guided by the National Health Commission's Institute of Science and Technology and supported by Hansoh Pharma.
