Zhao Jizong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Zhao Jizong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is an expert in neurosurgery. He serves as Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases, Deputy Director of the Expert Committee at the Beijing Center for Brain Science and Brain-inspired Intelligence, Dean of the School of Neurosurgery at Capital Medical University, and Professor and Chief Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery at Beijing Tiantan Hospital.
Professor Zhao Jizong has long been engaged in clinical and basic research in neurosurgery, making pioneering contributions to minimally invasive neurosurgery, cerebrovascular surgery, and translational research on brain cognition. He led national key projects under the 9th to 12th Five-Year Plans focused on the surgical treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, overcoming critical technical challenges in the surgical management of giant arteriovenous malformations and complex aneurysms. He promoted standardized minimally invasive surgical techniques for intracerebral hemorrhage and facilitated the nationwide adoption of diagnostic and surgical treatments for Moyamoya disease. In 2016, Professor Zhao’s team led a project under the 13th Five-Year Plan titled “New Hybrid Surgical Models for Complex Cerebrovascular Diseases,” proposing and implementing the theory of “concurrent treatment of brain and heart.” In 2018, he received a Major Special Project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for “Rehabilitation after Spinal Cord Injury.” Domestically, he took the lead in establishing a minimally invasive neurosurgical technology platform at an internationally advanced level, elevating neurosurgical practice from structural preservation to functional preservation of the brain, thereby positioning China’s neurosurgery among the international forefront.
As the discipline leader, he spearheaded collaborations between the Department of Neurosurgery and research institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tsinghua University, conducting clinical translational research on cognitive impairment-related brain diseases. After serving as an Executive Committee Member of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, he led Chinese neurosurgery onto the international stage. He has published 660 papers, including 258 indexed by SCI. He served as editor-in-chief for 14 monographs, including *Surgery of Cranial and Brain Tumors*, *Vascular Neurosurgery*, and *Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery*. He presided over the formulation of China’s *Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines – Neurosurgery Volume* and *Clinical Technical Operation Standards – Neurosurgery Volume*. In 2018, he received the Wu Jieping Medical Prize. He has been awarded 12 national and provincial/ministerial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards, including three Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, and one First Prize of the Chinese Medical Association Science and Technology Progress Award. He has been honored as a National Advanced Worker and a Beijing Advanced Worker, as well as an Outstanding Science Popularization Worker in Beijing.
