What Are Overweight and Obesity? The World Health Organization Defines Them AsAbnormal or Excessive Fat Accumulation That May Impair Health

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index used to classify overweight and obesity in adults, calculated as weight divided by the square of height (kg/m²). For adults, a BMI ≥ 25 indicates overweight, and a BMI ≥ 30 indicates obesity.

According to World Health Organization statistics, in 2016, 39% of adults aged 18 and older worldwide were overweight, totaling more than 1.9 billion people, among whom over 650 million were obese. In the same year, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 5–19 rose by more than 18%, with over 340 million individuals in this age group being overweight or obese.

Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for non-communicable diseases, with common health risks including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and even cancer.

Overweight, obesity, and their associated chronic diseases are largely preventable. Choosing healthier foods and engaging in regular physical activity are the most accessible preventive measures; however, a supportive environment is key to sustaining these behaviors.

Digbi Health isA company that provides precision digital therapeutics care programs for overweight and obese individuals, based on gut microbiome, genetic risk, and blood biomarker signals., committed to providing support for those who have been misled by “one-size-fits-all” health plans, weight-loss diets, and the stigma surrounding poor self-control.

Sharing Success Stories: From Personal Experience to Company Founding

Digbi Health is an innovative digital therapeutics company founded in California, United States, in 2018. The story of its inception begins with the personal experience of its founder and CEO, Ranjan.

Ranjan holds a master’s degree from the Wharton School and has received training in materials engineering and nutrition. He previously worked at Apple and IBM, and founded companies in the fields of big data software, human resources, and food, establishing himself as a highly active entrepreneur.

Ten years ago, Ranjan, who had always adhered to dietary and exercise guidelines, was informed by his doctor that three of his aortic arteries were blocked and required bypass surgery. This left Ranjan disappointed with the standard lifestyle recommendations he had consistently followed.

He declined the surgical recommendation and instead collaborated with physicians and geneticists. He learned that,When diets are tailored to an individual’s unique biological characteristics, food can also function like medicine.Based on this, ten years later, Ranjan cycled across the second-highest pass in the Himalayas, having successfully overcome a life-threatening illness.

Ranjan is passionate about the gut microbiome and genetics-based precision digital therapeutics. Eager to share his success stories with the public, he decided to found a company. Thus, Digbi Health was established. The company has since built teams in the United States, India, and the Philippines, comprising entrepreneurs, physicians, scientists, health coaches, and engineers.

Personalized Care Plans Based on Gut Microbiota and Genetic Profiles

Obesity is just the tip of the iceberg for symptoms in overweight individuals; data from the Digbi Health website indicates that 80% of overweight individuals have comorbidities. In other words, an individual simultaneously presents with two or more comorbid conditions that are difficult to prioritize and lack a necessary causal relationship, including inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory skin conditions, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, chronic pain, and sleep apnea syndrome.

Furthermore, studies have shown that obesity and inflammatory diseases are closely associated with individuals' physiological characteristics and are influenced by genetic factors and gut microbiota.Given that each individual’s genetic makeup and gut microbiota profile vary, healthcare plans cannot be applied universally.

Compared with the one-size-fits-all or universally applicable health plans of the past,Digbi Health provides personalized health solutions based on gut microbiota, genetics, and lifestyle, leveraging artificial intelligence to integrate six key factors influencing overweight: gut health, DNA, medication, exercise, lifestyle, and diet.

Digbi Health has developed two digital therapeutic programs: Digbi Control and Digbi Digestive.

Digbi Control, Personalized Weight Loss Plan

Digbi Control is a weight loss and obesity-related disease reversal program based on genetics and the gut microbiome. Its achievable outcomes include eliminating irritable bowel syndrome, alleviating hypertension, reducing the risk of COVID-19, and decreasing sleep apnea syndrome. The program comprises three components, as shown in the figure below.

Section 1: Testing and Dietary PlanUpon enrolling in the program, users first receive a prepaid test kit containing devices for collecting DNA and gut microbiome samples, including cotton swabs, specimen containers, and collection tubes. Users are required to collect their samples using these materials and mail them back for testing.

After testing the samples provided by users, Digbi Health will initially establish their basic health parameters, generate a health report, and provide preliminary lifestyle recommendations based on the report.

At this point, users are required to watch educational videos to understand the scientific principles underlying the upcoming health program. Simultaneously, they will initiate a meal plan, with the Digbi Control app identifying personalized meals suitable for the user from a database of over 500,000 recipes.

Section 2: Applications and Community. The Digbi Control program is extremely simple, eliminating the need to constantly calculate carbohydrate content. Users can simply check in by logging in daily and answering a few questions.

The program provides users with the following service support: first, setting daily fasting goals and tracking user compliance; second, scheduling and managing calls with health coaches; third, correlating users’ food intake, sleep, stress, and other factors contributing to overweight; and fourth, curating personalized meal plans. Additionally, it builds a community for users to engage in group interactions.

Digbi Control also sends users three reports: a Nutrition Report, a Fitness Report, and a Probiotics and Gut Health Report. The first two reports are based on the user’s genetic profile, outlining which foods and exercises are most beneficial for the individual; the latter is a comprehensive report that provides recommendations based on the user’s genetics and gut microbiome composition.

Section 3: Expert Nursing Care.In this section, users can select one additional genetic report every three months (e.g., cardiovascular health and skin health). Digbi Control will also send users an extra test kit once a year to track changes in their gut microbiome.

Throughout the entire care plan,Users will receive unlimited one-on-one health concierge guidance throughout the entire process.Guidance includes obtaining customized meal plans from health coaches, as well as to-do items and related information within the app.

Digbi Digestive: Optimizing Gut Health

Digbi Digestive aims to help users take control of their health to achieve a disease-free life, including reducing inflammation and managing insulin levels.

Similar to Digbi Control, users first receive a testing kit for genetic and gut microbiome analysis. Digbi Digestive decodes the user’s gut microbiome and genetic profile. In the second step, Digbi Digestive generates personalized reports and recommendations based on the gut and genetic test results. In the third step, users improve their health by taking small steps to reduce body weight and minimize inflammation. In the fourth step, the app continuously tracks nine key metrics, such as stress levels, energy, and body weight, while users communicate with their health coach to monitor progress, thereby achieving sustainable results from the program.

Under this plan, Digbi Digestive will also provide users with community access and group coaching sessions, enabling them to receive group counseling within the community and jointly participate in wellness programs such as yoga, meditation, and stress management.

According to a cohort report from Blue Shield of California, Digbi Digestive delivers transformative outcomes for users. As shown in the figure, 82% of participants experienced reduced symptoms of acid reflux; 79% reported decreased diarrhea, and 78% saw improvement in chronic constipation; 72% had reduced chronic acne, and 63% experienced less chronic pain.

Seven rounds of financing over three years underscore Digbi Health’s growth potential. According to VCBeat’s May global digital health investment and financing summary, weight loss and digital therapeutics are increasingly attracting capital interest. App products centered on “weight loss” have once again drawn significant investor attention and are gradually refining their business models—both the U.S.-based Noom and China-based Bohe Health secured additional funding in May.

On one hand, obesity, as a chronic disease, is one of the key areas of focus for digital therapeutics. On the other hand, research into the link between gut microbiota and disease is gradually being unveiled, and therapeutic approaches based on gut microbiota for precise disease intervention hold significant promise.

Digbi Health’s most distinguishing feature lies in its integration of human genetic and gut microbiome profiles, delivering personalized digital therapeutics for overweight and obese individuals from a more precise perspective. As a digital therapeutics innovator that integrates digital therapies with gut microbiome and genetic data, Digbi Health deserves continued attention.
