CMMI, short for Capability Maturity Model Integration, is the integrated capability maturity model. Developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, it is an internationally recognized authoritative standard for assessing the capability maturity and project management proficiency of software enterprises.
CMMI maturity levels are divided into five tiers. Among them, CMMI Level 5 represents the highest certification within this framework. It is currently the most rigorous, challenging, and prestigious assessment globally for software capability maturity, serving as the ultimate recognition of a company’s excellence in standardizing, regulating, and maturing its software research and development processes.
CMMI Maturity Levels
CMMI V2.0 is the latest version of CMMI, encompassing 12 capability areas and 25 practice areas. Officially released in March 2018, it began accepting assessments in January 2019. In October 2020, the CMMI Institute announced that it would only accept CMMI V2.0 assessments, with CMMI V2.0 fully replacing V1.3 worldwide.
CMMI V2.0 further emphasizes the driving role of business objectives in process improvement. In CMMI V1.3, the emphasis on process improvement aligned with business objectives was limited to Maturity Level 5. However, in CMMI V2.0, this alignment is emphasized across all maturity levels. This constitutes a fundamental principle of V2.0 and reflects the essence of process improvement. For the description of each practice, V2.0 introduces an additional component, namelyThe Value of Practice, which exemplifies improvements centered around business objectives. By highlighting key functions commonly found within the company, while emphasizing performance practices and focusing on process improvement through repeatability and best practices.
CMMI V2.0 focuses onOperational and Business Objectives(including time, quality, budget, customer satisfaction, etc.) to improve business performance; build agile resilience through the Scrum project process and focus on performance; accelerate model adoption while reducing preparation time and lifecycle costs. Under the previous CMMI V1.3 model, requirements were decomposed into defined areas known as “Process Areas,” which were categorized into four general groups: Process Management, Project Management, Engineering, and Support. With the release of the CMMI V2.0 model, the CMMI Institute introduced new terminology and restructured requirements inClasses, Competency Domains, and Practice DomainsRedefinition of the medium group.
Furthermore, the changes to the sampling rules in CMMI V2.0 have reduced human intervention, ensured the representativeness of the samples, and enabled a more objective assessment of whether an organization has achieved a specific CMMI maturity level.
