International Forum on Pharmaceutical R&D Innovation Opens Registration, Showcasing Four Key Scenarios

Sep 18, 2021 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

In recent years, driven by the transition from old to new growth drivers and supportive policies, an era of hard technology—represented by innovative technologies such as biopharmaceuticals and artificial intelligence—is accelerating.

Amid this wave, countless innovative enterprises have emerged in an effort to seize the trend. However, the challenge lies in the fact that pharmaceutical innovation often requires the combined forces of multiple innovative fields,From conceptualization to technological development, then to mature application, outcome incubation, and market launch, every stage of the process tests those who enter the field.

To help innovative players address this challenge, local governments, industrial parks, and investment institutions have all stepped up their efforts. Among them, Shanghai, as one of China’s most influential hubs for biomedical innovation, has consistently attracted widespread attention from the industry due to its rich concentration of innovation resources, high level of internationalization, and leading R&D and innovation capabilities.

As a global leading multinational pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca is also contributing to this trend. During the “2021 Shanghai International Biopharma Industry Week” held from October 11 to 17 this year,Guided by the Shanghai Municipal Leading Group for the Development of the Biopharmaceutical Industry, and hosted by the AstraZeneca Global R&D China Center with the Shanghai International Life Science Innovation Park as the organizer, the International Summit on Pharmaceutical R&D Innovation will be officially held.At that time, top scientists with international influence, innovative technology entrepreneurs, investors, hospital researchers, and other industry elites will gather by the Huangpu River under the auspices of relevant departments of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government to discuss future trends in the biopharmaceutical industry.

At this high-level summit, AstraZeneca will simultaneously launch enabling platforms such as the AstraZeneca Global R&D China Center, the Shanghai International Life Science Innovation Park, and the Healthcare AI Innovation Center. In conjunction with the AstraZeneca CICC Medical Industry Fund, these initiatives will support the construction of an open and collaborative ecosystem matrix for pharmaceutical R&D innovation, comprehensively aiding Shanghai in establishing itself as a world-class hub for the biopharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore, in-depth discussions will be held with professionals from the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and technological innovation sectors, as well as relevant government departments, on four cutting-edge topics: precision medicine, innovative remote intelligent clinical trials, AI-empowered new drug R&D, and research-oriented hospitals. By integrating global pharmaceutical innovation with domestic strengths in pharmaceutical and technological innovation, we aim to promote further industrial convergence and advancement in pharmaceutical innovation, thereby contributing to the Healthy China initiative. Moving forward, the forum will also provide greater support and empowerment to innovative enterprises through full-chain services encompassing project development, corporate incubation, and industry cultivation.

Aggregating Multi-Party Resources to Be a Companion and Partner on the R&D Journey

The development of the biopharmaceutical industry often requires support and collaboration from multiple stakeholders.

It is evident that Shanghai has been vigorously promoting the development of its biopharmaceutical industry, continuously attracting talent and capital. As a result, in 2020, the scale of Shanghai’s biopharmaceutical industry exceeded RMB 600 billion, with the total industrial output value surpassing RMB 140 billion. A number of major technological achievements and products have emerged, filling gaps both domestically and internationally.

The AstraZeneca Global R&D China Center, which officially opened during the summit, is a global R&D platform jointly promoted and established by AstraZeneca’s global management team and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. The AstraZeneca Global R&D China Center will focus on disease areas with the most urgent patient needs. By developing new capabilities in artificial intelligence, big data, bioanalysis, and translational medicine, it will further enhance China’s strategic position within the global new drug R&D network, leverage its core roles in early-stage R&D, global market access, and translational science, and accelerate the early development and incubation of more local and global innovative drugs in China, thereby benefiting patients in China and worldwide.

From this perspective, Shanghai, AstraZeneca, and various stakeholders across government, industry, academia, research, investment, and healthcare are all actively serving as collaborators and partners on the path of R&D for innovative forces in biopharmaceuticals, thereby providing sustained and robust momentum for the high-quality development of the entire medical and health industry.

It is evident that a major wave of ecological integration is surging forward, bringing new opportunities to the biopharmaceutical industry.Against this backdrop, we look forward to joining hands with you on October 11 in Jing’an, Shanghai, to discuss the future.
