Addressing Critical Pain Points: Customized R&D and Manufacturing of Medical-Grade Polymer Materials

Medical polymer materials, in a broad sense, refer to all polymeric materials used in medical activities. In a narrow sense, they refer to functional polymeric materials designed for medical purposes, applied to the human body, possessing specialized properties, and meeting specific medical requirements. Medical polymer materials consist of a polymer matrix and additives. Based on the properties of the synthetic materials, synthetic medical polymers can be classified into biodegradable and non-biodegradable synthetic medical polymer materials.

In terms of the proportion of application endpoints, medical polymer materials are primarily used in the production of medical devices such as medical consumables and implants, with only a very small fraction of high-end medical polymer materials being utilized as drug-controlled release carriers.

From the perspective of medical device classification, medical-grade polymer materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polycarbonate are widely used in the manufacturing of Class I and Class II medical devices, including low-value medical consumables like disposable infusion sets, blood transfusion sets, and indwelling needles. In contrast, medical-grade polymers with more prominent performance advantages, such as polypropylene and polyethylene, are more frequently applied in Class III medical devices.

According to statistics from Grand View Research, medical devices and instruments currently account for the largest share of global demand for medical polymer products, at 55%, followed by medical packaging at 35%.

As one of the eight key high-tech sectors prioritized for national support, polymer materials have received substantial backing from the Chinese government for related technological innovation, material research, and applications.
