AstraBio Strengthens Leadership in Neurological Blood Biomarker Diagnostics with Full-Chain Integration via Single-Molecule Immunoassay Platform

Oct 09, 2021 08:00 CST Updated 08:00

Recently, ASTRABIO (Suzhou Yuce Biotechnology Co., Ltd.) completed the acquisition of Xiamen Renrui Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd. Beyond its established single-molecule immunoassay technology platform, this move enables comprehensive coverage across the entire industry chain and all technological platforms, spanning upstream core biological raw materials to molecular diagnostics. Following the acquisition, ASTRABIO’s core business encompasses neuro-blood biomarker testing based on single-molecule immunoassay technology, risk gene testing, and the R&D and production of core raw materials for neuroimmunological antibodies. Leveraging Renrui Biomedical’s professional and efficient capabilities in developing core biological raw materials, along with its mature registration system for Class III medical devices, ASTRABIO is actively addressing unmet clinical diagnostic needs. The company aims to become the most specialized enterprise with the most comprehensive product portfolio in the field of neurological blood biomarker diagnostics.

I. On the Market for Blood-Based Diagnostic Tests Using Neural Biomarkers

Blood-based testing for neural biomarkers has long been a major challenge in clinical diagnostics. Due to the blood-brain barrier, many brain-related neural biomarkers can only be effectively detected in cerebrospinal fluid, hindering their widespread adoption. After crossing the blood-brain barrier into the bloodstream, the concentrations of these biomarkers drop significantly, making them difficult to detect with conventional techniques due to limitations in sensitivity. The development of high-sensitivity blood-based biomarker assays, particularly for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and multiple sclerosis, will create a blue-ocean market worth hundreds of billions of yuan.

II. Foundation—China’s Only Mature Single-Molecule Immunoassay Technology Platform

Single-Molecule Immunoassay refers to the detection of protein molecules at the single-molecule level by employing immune labeling methods, where antibodies capture and recognize antigens, followed by signal molecule labeling or enzyme-linked labeling, and realized through single-molecule fluorescence signal detection or single-molecule enzymatic reactions. Its detection sensitivity far exceeds that of existing chemiluminescence technology platforms, enabling the detection of trace-level biomarkers.

ASTRABIO is the first company in China to industrialize single-molecule immunoassay technology, leveraging globally pioneering technical principles to achieve fully automated, low-cost single-molecule immune detection. The company has currently launched multiple models of research-grade fully automated single-molecule immunoassay instruments along with supporting assay kits, and has completed installation at key customer sites. Meanwhile, its clinical instruments have passed registration testing, and it has achieved development and mass production of core blood biomarker assay kits (including p-Tau181, p-Tau217, NFL, Aβ40, Aβ42, etc.). ASTRABIO is poised to become the first company in China, and indeed globally, to obtain clinical registration certificates for both single-molecule immunoassay instruments and associated kits. Consequently, ASTRABIO’s single-molecule immunoassay technology comprehensively covers application scenarios such as scientific research, clinical laboratory testing, and health screenings.

Neurological blood biomarkers, representing the optimal application scenario for single-molecule immunoassays, constitute a key strategic focus for the company. ASTRABIO will rapidly achieve comprehensive coverage of neurological biomarkers while actively promoting the clinical adoption of novel biomarkers. The company is also progressively expanding into other areas, including infectious disease pathogen detection, nephrology biomarker testing, and ophthalmic disease diagnostics.

III. Like a Tiger with Wings Added—Building an Industrial Closed Loop with Core Biological Raw Materials

As the immune diagnostics industry matures, the strategic importance of upstream core biological raw materials is increasingly recognized. Through this acquisition, ASTRABIO has secured in-house development and manufacturing capabilities for these critical materials, ensuring complete independence for its single-molecule immunoassay products. Renrui Biology boasts a professional antibody development team and a mature antibody evaluation system. Its core founding team brings nearly three decades of experience in biological raw material development and has already achieved the development and mass production of scarce biomarkers, including p-Tau181 and p-Tau217. Renrui’s antibody pipeline aligns closely with ASTRABIO’s key strategic focus areas, offering strong synergy. It will continue to provide stable, optimized, high-quality biological raw materials for ASTRABIO’s single-molecule technology platform, facilitating the rapid expansion of clinical applications, particularly in the development of scarce biomarkers.

IV. Collaborative Layout—Expanding the Molecular Diagnostics Technology Platform

As one of the two mainstream technologies in the diagnostics sector, ASTRABIO has expanded its product pipeline into the field of molecular diagnostics through this acquisition, building upon its existing immunoassay capabilities to achieve a comprehensive multi-platform layout. Its risk gene detection kits will make a strong entry into the specialty testing market, completing the final piece of its commercial portfolio. Meanwhile, the significant overlap in disease focus areas will maximize channel synergy value.

The company has currently completed its portfolio layout, which includes the Alzheimer’s disease APOE gene (ε2/ε3/ε4) kit, the Parkinson’s disease GBA genotyping assay kit, and the LRRK2 genotyping diagnostic kit. Among these, the APOE genotyping kit has already obtained a Class III medical device registration certificate, while the GBA and LRRK2 genotyping kits are expected to secure the first two Class III medical device approvals in China for Parkinson’s disease-related diagnostics. Meanwhile, Renrui Biology’s mature and efficient Class III medical device registration system, coupled with its robust clinical resources, will help ASTRABIO accelerate the registration process for its clinical diagnostic kits.

Following the completion of this acquisition, ASTRABIO has achieved a comprehensive strategic layout spanning from core raw material control to risk-gene disease prediction products and high-sensitivity clinical diagnostic products, thereby establishing a product portfolio that fully covers the specialized testing, health screening, and clinical diagnostics markets.
