On October 19, at the Second China Postpartum Reproductive Health Industry Summit, guided by the Maternal and Child Health Service Industry Committee of the China Maternal and Child Health Care Association and hosted by Shenzhen Dejia Zhilian Technology Co., Ltd., the Mamakang Research Institute released the industry’s first industrial development report, “Development Trends in the Postpartum Rehabilitation Industry 2021.” By integrating industry insights with user surveys conducted by Mamakang, the report provides a detailed analysis of the current state of the postpartum rehabilitation market, user characteristics, and industry trends, offering valuable references for the sector’s development.
The report indicates that, based on national supportive policies in rehabilitation medicine and maternal and child health, the key themes driving the current development of the postpartum rehabilitation industry are “integration of prevention and treatment, continuous service, social participation, and standardized norms.” In terms of market size and growth rate for maternal and infant care and postpartum rehabilitation equipment, China’s postpartum rehabilitation equipment market has substantial room for expansion, with its growth rate exceeding the overall growth rate of the broader maternal and infant industry. From a segmented market perspective, the primary consumer base is gradually shifting from medical institutions to postpartum rehabilitation centers and households. The market growth rates, ranked from highest to lowest, are as follows: household segment, postpartum rehabilitation centers, and medical institutions.
Currently, the key service providers in the postpartum rehabilitation industry include medical institutions (such as hospitals, maternal and child health care hospitals, community health service centers, and physician clinics); postpartum rehabilitation institutions (covering various business formats such as postpartum recovery centers, confinement centers, fitness centers, Tui Na massage centers, medical aesthetic centers, and beauty centers); and home-based scenarios (involving home equipment manufacturers and at-home service practitioners). In addition to postpartum rehabilitation services, these service providers also offer a range of related services.
This report presents findings from a survey conducted among users who have purchased Mamakang home-use products, as well as those who purchased these products and participated in the postpartum rehabilitation training camp for more than one month. The study reveals that postpartum challenges faced by users are multifactorial, primarily involving issues related to sexual life, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and diastasis recti abdominis. The majority of users are women of childbearing age, concentrated between 25 and 35 years old; however, both younger and middle-aged to elderly women also demonstrate needs for pelvic floor rehabilitation. The incidence rates of pelvic floor dysfunction disorders and female sexual dysfunction disorders are positively correlated with age. Notably, 53.31% of users had attempted other rehabilitation methods prior to purchasing the home-use devices. Only 60.98% of users underwent rehabilitation within the golden recovery period, defined as the first six months postpartum. After one month of participation in the training camp, 83.72% of users experienced improved muscle strength, and 88.37% reported that the training camp was highly beneficial for their home-based rehabilitation.
Based on market and user research in the postpartum recovery sector, it is evident that the industry is undergoing transformations in its target demographics, service delivery models, and service providers. In terms of target demographics, services are expanding to include women preparing for pregnancy, middle-aged and elderly women, and those seeking improvements in their sexual well-being. Regarding service delivery models, the industry is extending into home-based postpartum care and daily training routines, thereby prolonging the duration of user engagement and enhancing overall health outcomes. As for service providers, some non-specialized institutions, such as massage and yoga studios, have integrated their existing offerings with postpartum recovery services, a synergy whose efficacy in rehabilitation has been substantiated by medical literature.
A review of the development history of China’s postpartum rehabilitation industry reveals that, following the nascent stage (2008–2011), the rapid growth phase (2012–2016), and the period of high market penetration (2017–2020), the industry entered a phase of integrated development in 2021. It is gradually moving toward systematicization and standardization, with its target population expanding beyond postpartum women. The integration of rehabilitative therapy with daily training, the convergence of institutional and home-based postpartum care, and the cross-sector integration of postpartum rehabilitation with other industries are all accelerating.
