Academicians and Leading Experts Discuss Smart Healthcare

Academician Li Lanjuan, Chinese Academy of Engineering

Academician Li Lanjuan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering pointed out that the integration of emerging technologies—such as mobile internet, wearable devices, and big data—with new business models is fundamentally reshaping the cognitive framework of healthcare. China is gradually entering a new phase of smart healthcare, and the smart healthcare industry will undoubtedly drive the development of the “Healthy China” initiative. In the future, the healthcare sector will incorporate more advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and sensor technology, enabling medical services to achieve genuine intelligence. In this new era, the deep integration of big data, artificial intelligence, and healthcare holds exceptional value and significance.

Academician Wang Weiqi, Chinese Academy of Engineering

Based on innovations and breakthroughs in “chokehold” technologies within China’s healthcare sector, Wang Weiqi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, provided a detailed interpretation of the Industrial Foundation Development Catalog (2021 Edition), with a particular focus on key healthcare-related areas. He pointed out that China must currently wage a determined campaign to advance the upgrading of industrial foundations and the modernization of industrial chains. The purpose of compiling the industrial catalog is to provide references for government-led efforts to tackle critical technological challenges and to guide the allocation of social capital. The healthcare industry has become a focal point of competition among major powers, and achieving self-reliance and controllability in high-end medical equipment has risen to the level of national strategy.

Academician Huang Hefeng, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Academician Huang Hefeng pointed out that at the recent Joint Conference of Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the national government proposed new mechanisms—namely “open competition” and “horse racing”—to break through “chokepoint technologies.” In essence, the state is publicly calling for talent. She expressed her hope that Chinese innovators and entrepreneurs would courageously assume their contemporary mission: to “ride forth and claim the postings issued by the state,” thereby accepting the binding commitments.

Wang Hong, Dean of CEIBS, Professor of Management, and Hengdian Group Chair Professor of Management, extended warm congratulations on the opening of the “2021 (1st) China Smart Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Forum,” pointing out that “the last mile of smart healthcare, precision medicine, and scientific medical research directly contributes to human well-being.” She praised Professor Zhu Xiaoming, former Dean of CEIBS and Chair of the Academic Committee of the CEIBS Institute of Smart Healthcare, along with several academicians, for assuming responsibility from a holistic perspective, with forward-looking vision, a sense of national mission, and academic accountability. She also expressed gratitude to CEIBS alumni for their active contributions to supporting CEIBS and China’s economic development.

Professor Zhu Xiaoming shared the 10-year journey and academic achievements of China and Europe in the field of smart healthcare, while expressing great expectations for its future. He stated that today, evidence-based medicine, clinical medicine, precision medicine, and translational medicine are all in urgent need of digitalization, intelligentization, and smart integration. The China-Europe Smart Healthcare Entrepreneurship Course is both timely and well-suited to this need. “Doctors now receive vast amounts of quantitative data 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and this trend continues to accelerate. Within ten years, we will live in a world where nearly everything that can be measured will be continuously monitored.” He suggested that the topics for the association’s next forum and the research institute’s next phase could be more diversified, such as:

1. Radiological Imaging: New Research on Visual Intelligence, Deep Learning, and Convolutional Models;

2. Transformation of Medical Services: New Achievements in Digital Solutions;

3. Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine: The Integrated Development of the Four Diagnostic Methods (Inspection, Auscultation and Olfaction, Inquiry, and Palpation) with Digitalization and Intelligence;

4. Industry-Academia-Research-Medicine Collaboration: Exclusive Entrepreneurship and Innovation Themed Forums for Students of Cohorts 1–6 of the China-Europe Smart Healthcare Entrepreneurship Program;

5. Thematic Keynotes: Forums Featuring Academician Presidents and Renowned Physicians (e.g., the proposed Dentistry Forum).

Shan Junbao, President of the Investment and Financing Institutions Branch of the China Non-Public Medical Association and President of CICC Capital, pointed out that no other industry in China combines three major dividends like the pharmaceutical, medical, and broader health sector: dividends from industrial transformation, policy reforms, and support from capital markets. “Investors often say it is better to miss an opportunity than to make a wrong investment. However, when it comes to biopharmaceuticals, many frequently remark that it is better to make a wrong investment than to miss out. You may bet on the wrong player, but you cannot afford to miss an era.”

Deputy District Mayor Li Guohua of Pudong New Area stated that the district is highly committed to collaborating with China-Europe partners to build a world-class foundation for the biopharmaceutical and digital health industries, establishing Pudong as the most reputable hub in China.
