Dongyao Pharmaceutical Breaks Ground on Global R&D Center to Advance Innovative Oncology Pipeline

On November 9, the groundbreaking ceremony for Akesobio’s Global R&D Center was successfully concluded. Shen Mi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park; Shen Jing, Director of the Suzhou Municipal Taiwan Affairs Office; Zhu Jiang, Member of the Party Working Committee and Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park; Liu Hua, Member of the Party Working Committee and Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Suzhou Industrial Park; Fu Shan, Chairman of the Board of Akesobio; Liu Jun, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Akesobio; Huang Chunying, Vice Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Akesobio; and Qiu Yumin, Non-Executive Director of Akesobio and Partner at Shangcheng Capital, jointly participated in the groundbreaking ceremony by shoveling soil onto the foundation.

Mr. Fu Shan stated that the establishment of TopAlliance Biosciences’ Global R&D Center in Suzhou will help consolidate the company’s development advantages in the field of innovative biologics, enabling it to serve China and the world. It will also strengthen TopAlliance’s leading position in the field of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) therapeutics and promote the Group’s innovative drug R&D efforts in China and globally. Looking ahead, we will adhere to two fundamental principles: first, focusing on the Chinese market and serving Suzhou well; second, continuing TopAlliance’s long-standing commitment to prioritizing major indications and blockbuster drugs, thereby developing more products that enhance drug accessibility.

Dr. Liu Jun stated that the establishment of the Global R&D Center will consolidate the company’s R&D resources, with a focus on enhancing process development capabilities for innovative drugs and strengthening refined management of the quality system. This will further accelerate the speed and improve the quality of drug development, thereby fostering stronger collaborations with innovative pharmaceutical R&D enterprises. On another front, Allpharm Services will more effectively utilize the production space available in its completed Plant 1 and Plant 2, significantly expanding production capacity and increasing line flexibility to prepare for the manufacturing of a broader portfolio of innovative drugs.

TopAlliance Biosciences operates an internationally competitive R&D and manufacturing base for anti-tumor drugs in Suzhou Industrial Park, covering a total area of 50,000 square meters, with plans for five phases of construction. The Phase I anti-cancer drug factory and the Phase II biopharmaceutical R&D and industrialization base were completed and became operational in 2012 and 2018, respectively. With the continuous expansion of its product pipeline, the existing laboratories within the facility dedicated to drug R&D and testing could no longer meet the company’s needs for developing a diversified portfolio of anti-tumor drugs, prompting the initiation of the Global R&D Center project.

The Global R&D Center is expected to be completed in 2023, with a total gross floor area of 25,000 square meters. It will house functions including early-stage research and development (R&D), process development, quality research, and corporate headquarters operations. The core laboratory area for R&D can accommodate 280–300 researchers and support concurrent experiments and process development for multiple monoclonal antibody drugs, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), oncolytic virus therapies, and specialized small-molecule anti-tumor drugs. Seamlessly integrated with the production area, this co-located R&D and manufacturing facility will enable synergistic efficiency across the entire drug development lifecycle, thereby enhancing R&D productivity and cost advantages.

As the blueprint of “Healthy China 2030” gradually becomes a vivid reality, China’s biopharmaceutical industry is flourishing. Suzhou Industrial Park has designated the biopharmaceutical sector as its “No. 1 industry,” aggregating high-end innovation resources to build a core area of a world-class biopharmaceutical industry landmark.
