According to foreign media reports, Baidu has recently signed an agreement with Sanofi, a global leading biopharmaceutical company based in France. Both parties have agreed to integrate Baidu’s self-developed mRNA sequence design optimization algorithm, LinearDesign, into Sanofi’s product design pipeline. Under the agreement, Sanofi will leverage the LinearDesign platform to optimize the design and development of mRNA for the treatment and prevention of human diseases.
The validation of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated the applicability of the mRNA technology platform in the vaccine field, bringing “mRNA vaccines” from a term known only within the medical community into the public spotlight. As one of the four global vaccine giants, Sanofi boasts extensive experience and technical prowess in vaccine R&D. Its licensing agreement with Baidu underscores the potential of LinearDesign in the development of various vaccines and therapeutics—including infectious disease vaccines, oncology drugs, and monoclonal antibodies—highlighting both its scientific and commercial value.
Baidu’s partnership with Sanofi demonstrates its biological computing capabilities in optimizing mRNA vaccine and therapeutic design, marking a milestone for the practical application of biological computing in drug R&D and further validating the value of AI and biological computing technologies in life sciences. Industry experts predict that biological computing will play an even greater role in safeguarding global health by shortening new drug development cycles, reducing R&D costs, and improving the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnostics.
Wu Tian, Vice President of Baidu Group, stated that emerging mRNA technology has rapidly advanced the research and development of vaccines and therapeutics for infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The integration of mRNA with biological computing will further accelerate and enhance the efficiency of this process, potentially offering a completely new paradigm for future drug discovery. Baidu is honored to collaborate with Sanofi in bringing mRNA-related therapeutics and vaccines to the global healthcare sector.
Baidu Research recognized the importance of computational biology and bioinformatics several years ago, and proactively initiated research in the field of RNA secondary structure in 2018. It subsequently launched LinearFold, the world’s fastest algorithm for RNA structure prediction, and LinearPartition, the world’s fastest algorithm for RNA partition function and base-pairing probability prediction. In early 2020, during the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baidu Research leveraged its long-term, forward-looking expertise in biological computing to successfully develop LinearDesign, an algorithm for mRNA sequence design, within a few months.
It is reported that the effectiveness of the LinearDesign algorithm has been preliminarily validated through in vitro and animal studies. Recently, Baidu announced that LinearDesign had completed biological experimental validation for a COVID-19 vaccine. In terms of key vaccine evaluation metrics—namely stability, protein expression levels, and immunogenicity—the COVID-19 vaccine sequences designed by LinearDesign significantly outperformed those generated by traditional methods (baseline sequences). Notably, the critical metric of neutralizing antibody titers increased by more than 20-fold, while binding antibody levels and T-cell responses showed 23-fold and 6-fold improvements, respectively. These results fully demonstrate the practical efficacy of the LinearDesign algorithm and its substantial commercial value in the biopharmaceutical industry.
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baidu has continuously leveraged cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to support epidemic prevention and control efforts. Currently, Baidu has made freely available to the global community LinearFold and LinearPartition, the world’s fastest existing algorithms for RNA structure prediction, along with a website integrating these algorithms (http://rna.baidu.com), to accelerate the prediction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA secondary structures. In April 2020, Baidu also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC). The two parties jointly established the “China CDC Emergency Technology Center – Baidu Gene Sequencing Workstation” to facilitate rapid viral sequencing, analysis, and monitoring, thereby jointly advancing research related to COVID-19.
Public reports indicate that Baidu is currently in discussions with several renowned biopharmaceutical companies, both domestically and internationally, regarding scientific research and commercial collaborations. In the future, Baidu will remain committed to promoting the deep integration of AI algorithm technology with the biopharmaceutical industry, extending the application of algorithms such as LinearDesign to a wide range of scenarios, including drug and vaccine development.
