Upgrading the Industrial Engine, Empowering a Healthy Chongqing: International Renowned Biopharma Companies Visit Chongqing

On December 17, 2021, the “Visit to Chongqing by Internationally Renowned Biopharmaceutical Companies” event, jointly organized by the Chongqing Municipal Investment Promotion Agency and the People’s Government of Banan District, Chongqing Municipality, was held in Chongqing. Themed “Upgrading Industrial Engines to Empower a Healthy and Prosperous Chongqing,” the event invited representatives from 17 well-known domestic and international biopharmaceutical companies, including Pharmaron, Sunovo, BGI Genomics, GE Healthcare, and Roche Pharmaceuticals. Relevant officials from the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission, the Chongqing Municipal Healthcare Security Administration, the Chongqing Municipal Big Data Development Bureau, the Chongqing Municipal Medical Products Administration, Yuzhong District, Shapingba District, Chongqing Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing High-Tech Zone, and Chongqing Economic and Technological Development Zone attended the exchange meeting. Zhou Qing, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, attended and delivered remarks.

Representatives from internationally renowned biopharmaceutical companies, including Sunlight Noah, Fapon Biotech, Yuce Bio, AstraZeneca, and Junshi Biosciences, presented their achievements in technological innovation, outcome transformation, and future planning. They outlined their development directions and specific needs, while offering proactive suggestions on building Chongqing into a national medical hub, a western healthcare highland, a key national pharmaceutical base, and an internationally recognized wellness destination, thereby jointly promoting the innovative and high-quality development of Chongqing’s biopharmaceutical industry. Representatives from companies unable to visit Chongqing due to pandemic control measures participated and actively engaged in discussions online. Relevant municipal government departments and district/county officials responded individually to the concerns raised by the enterprises. In his concluding remarks, Deputy Secretary-General Zhou Qing of the Municipal Government pointed out that Chongqing is currently at a critical stage of upgrading its biopharmaceutical industry. Optimizing industrial structure, strengthening industrial clusters, and enhancing innovation vitality require deep participation and collaborative development by all biopharmaceutical enterprises. He further emphasized that, amid major strategic opportunities such as the coordinated development of the biopharmaceutical sector within the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, Chongqing boasts immense industrial development potential and broad prospects. He expressed hope that biopharmaceutical companies would seize these opportunities to progress and develop together with Chongqing.

On the afternoon of December 17, representatives from several internationally renowned biopharmaceutical companies conducted on-site visits and inspections at Chongqing International Bio-City and other locations.

In recent years, Chongqing Municipality has thoroughly studied and implemented the important directives on building a Healthy China, successively issuing a series of documents, including the Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of the Grand Health Industry in Chongqing (2020–2025), the “Healthy Chongqing 2030” Plan, the Implementation Scheme for the Healthy China Chongqing Initiative, and the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of the Biopharmaceutical Industry. Centered on the goal of establishing Chongqing as a national medical hub, a western healthcare highland, a key national pharmaceutical base, and an internationally renowned destination for health and wellness, Chongqing is accelerating the high-quality development of its biopharmaceutical industry. Efforts are being made to attract and gather high-level professional talent, strengthen resource integration and clustering, encourage innovative research and development, and build a complete industrial chain ecosystem. By continuously promoting industrial transformation and upgrading and enhancing capacity building, Chongqing aims to emerge as a new national highland for the biopharmaceutical industry.
