Diabetes is also known as the "invisible killer of health." Poor blood glucose control can lead to various complications, reducing patients' quality of life and, in severe cases, directly threatening their lives. Over the past few decades, a growing body of research has confirmed that health management is essential for improving the condition of diabetic patients, and diabetes health management is receiving increasing attention.
Focusing on the implementation and daily practice of diabetes health management, JD Health established the Diabetes Nutrition and Rehabilitation Center in March 2021, appointing Professor Zou Dajin from Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital as its academic leader. On January 7, 2022, the “2022 Expert Symposium on Diabetes Remission and Annual Work Conference of the JD Health Diabetes Nutrition and Rehabilitation Center” was held at JD Group’s headquarters, with multiple industry experts in attendance to share their latest research findings and clinical practices.
At the conference, Professor Zou Dajin pointed out that multiple studies have demonstrated that comprehensive intervention and nutritional rehabilitation measures can not only help patients with early-stage type 2 diabetes achieve restoration of islet function and reversal of metabolic indicators, but also reduce medical costs for patients and delay the onset of complications, thereby benefiting both the nation and its people. However, due to the deeply entrenched belief that “type 2 diabetes is a progressively worsening disease,” the implementation of comprehensive intervention and nutritional rehabilitation measures has long faced certain obstacles. To address this issue, under the initiative and support of JD Health, the “Chinese Expert Consensus on Remission of Type 2 Diabetes” (hereinafter referred to as the “Consensus”), jointly developed by more than 20 domestic experts led by Professor Ji Linong, Director of the Department of Endocrinology at Peking University People’s Hospital, and Professor Zou Dajin, was officially released in September 2021. The Consensus aims to guide endocrinologists in updating their treatment concepts and actively participating in the development of a comprehensive system for diabetes management.
“Fellow physicians often tell me that many patients seeking outpatient consultations for diabetes remission services have had their willingness for self-management awakened and have gained new hope for rehabilitative treatment, thanks to the publication of the Consensus and media coverage,” shared Professor Zou Dajin. Regarding the future work plan of the Diabetes Nutritional Rehabilitation Center, Professor Zou stated that it is essential to collaborate with more experts to standardize the diabetes management process, ensuring professionalism and rigor in practice. Meanwhile, he expressed the hope of leveraging JD Health’s technological capabilities to help patients benefit from a smarter and more efficient service system.
Xiao Jianbo, General Manager of JD Health’s Internet Medical Division, stated that the Consensus has gained widespread recognition among patients and the industry, marking a move toward standardized diabetes remission management services in China. Looking ahead, JD Health aims to collaborate with more physicians and partners to promote and implement the Consensus, empowering more clinicians to assist patients with early-stage type 2 diabetes in effective lifestyle management, thereby enhancing patient well-being and confidence in overcoming the disease.
Zhao Xuming, Head of the JD Health Diabetes Center, presented a report on the center’s work in 2021 at the conference. In 2021, in addition to supporting experts in publishing the Consensus, the center collaborated with industry partners to provide continuing medical education for endocrinologists and patient education. It also launched “JD Health Diabetes Remission Huts” in the endocrinology departments of more than 40 hospitals, assisting these departments in popularizing scientific knowledge among patients, encouraging them to proactively seek help, and implementing diabetes management. Meanwhile, through collaboration with industry partners, the center helped over 2,000 diabetic patients discontinue medication in 2021, truly ushering in the inaugural year of diabetes “reversal.” Xiao Jianbo stated that helping patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes delay the initiation of glucose-lowering medications and extend the period free from complications through health management can significantly reduce national medical insurance expenditures and out-of-pocket costs for patients, thereby delivering substantial social value. Starting in 2022, the center will deepen its engagement in the field of diabetes by further developing physician alliances and expert advisory groups, jointly enhancing patient awareness, and promoting more standardized and rapid industry development.
At the conference, more than 20 experts from across China engaged in in-depth discussions on the academic concept of diabetes remission and jointly launched the Diabetes Remission Action Plan—“Initiating a New Movement for Diabetes: Offering Patients a Chance at Remission.” Through activities such as signing pledges and sharing messages, they called on the public to pay greater attention to the prevention, control, and remission of diabetes.
In addition, five leading domestic diabetes management companies shared their service experiences at the conference, with experts providing commentary and development recommendations. With the release of the Consensus and the growing attention from both the industry and the public to comprehensive diabetes intervention and nutritional rehabilitation, JD Health Diabetes Center will collaborate with more medical experts and industry partners in the future to jointly promote the healthy development of diabetes management and provide higher-quality services to more patients with diabetes.
