The COVID-19 pandemic has brought mRNA technology into the public spotlight. mRNA vaccines hold broad application prospects in the field of infectious disease prevention. Beyond mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines, a dark-horse company in the industry has already made strategic investments in its mRNA technology platform.

As early as November 2020, Grand Pharma established a joint venture, Auro Biotech Co., Ltd., in Nanjing with Belgium-based eTheRNA, to deploy a global innovative mRNA technology platform. Leveraging eTheRNA’s mature mRNA manufacturing processes and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technologies, the company is engaged in the research and development of products related to cancer immunotherapy and vaccines for infectious diseases. By utilizing its proprietary intellectual property technologies, it has the potential to induce long-lasting T-cell immune memory, thereby enhancing protection against diverse viral strains.

The mRNA vaccine sector is a high-barrier innovative technology field. Through its collaboration with eTheRNA, Grand Pharma has gained the capability to compete on par with leading international mRNA companies. Meanwhile, leveraging mRNA technology, the company will expand its research and development efforts in mRNA-based drugs and vaccines. According to Grand Pharma, by investing in Nanjing Aoluo Biotechnology, it has already initiated projects related to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and is currently conducting R&D activities. With the increasing adoption of mRNA therapeutics, the company is expected to benefit significantly in the future.

In fact, the field of anti-infective therapy for critical care has always been one of Grand Pharma’s core strategic areas. The company has deployed three global innovative drugs in this field, achieving significant progress in the treatment of severe COVID-19, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). On January 18, Grand Pharma announced preliminary data from the Phase IIa clinical study of its global innovative drug STC3141 for the treatment of severe COVID-19 in Europe. The data indicated favorable expected outcomes in patient mortality and rates of progression to severe disease, reflecting the product’s significant therapeutic potential for patients with severe COVID-19.

Currently, clinical trials for STC3141 are being conducted simultaneously in multiple countries worldwide for diseases that pose significant threats to human health or lack effective treatments, including sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and COVID-19. Grand Pharma has stated that it will actively advance the clinical development of STC3141 to further explore its potential in treating severe cases of COVID-19 and other critical conditions.

Moreover, Grand Pharma has partnered with Griffith University in Australia to secure rights to the world’s first parainfluenza therapeutic and related technologies developed by the university’s Glycomics Institute.

Under the agreement, Griffith University will be responsible for the further screening and optimization of novel parainfluenza drugs, while Grand Pharma has established a research and development center in Australia to oversee subsequent clinical development and post-launch commercialization. The market anticipates that this collaboration could generate annual sales revenue in the billion-dollar range for Grand Pharma, indicating highly promising prospects.

As multiple regions across China report cases of Omicron variant infections, public attention on COVID-19 has been reignited. The market for severe infection management, particularly the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, remains stable and holds promising prospects.

Judging from Grand Pharma’s comprehensive layout in the antiviral and anti-infective fields, with its portfolio encompassing mRNA vaccines, global innovative drugs for severe COVID-19, and oral innovative therapeutics for parainfluenza, this tripartite, all-encompassing strategic positioning positions Grand Pharma as a potential dark horse among COVID-19 concept stocks, further broadening its growth prospects.
