On January 20, 2022, the “2022 China Medical Research Summit,” hosted by Shanghai MedSci Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “MedSci”), was grandly held.

“Against the backdrop of deepening reforms in healthcare delivery, pharmaceuticals, and medical insurance, the concept of ‘promoting clinical practice through scientific research’ has gained widespread acceptance, with research being accorded paramount importance. Scientific research has not only become a key benchmark for measuring hospital competitiveness but also a critical indicator for evaluating physicians’ professional competence. Meanwhile, with the robust development of innovative drugs in China, scientific research is bringing greater innovation opportunities to pharmaceutical companies,” pointed out Dr. Zhang Fabao, Chairman of MedSci, at the “2022 China Medical Research Summit and 2021 Annual Research Report” (hereinafter referred to as the “Research Summit”).

Scientific Management of Research Is Gradually Being Realized

With the advancement of science and technology, research management is progressively becoming more scientific. How, then, should we understand research management?

Southern Medical University Research InstituteZhao ZhenAt the summit, the hospital president provided an answer. He believes that the essence of research management lies in aggregating diverse resources and fully leveraging research management strategies. By adeptly aligning with trends, capitalizing on momentum, creating favorable conditions, and riding the wave of opportunity, one can achieve the effect of “pushing a massive boulder from a great height,” thereby obtaining optimal returns on investment and achieving established clinical research goals.

Statistics is "Key" in Clinical Research

For every researcher, it is crucial to include statistical principles in their toolkit. Statistics not only helps researchers efficiently present and communicate their findings but also assists in understanding and evaluating the credibility of other academic papers. Furthermore, statistics aids researchers in controlling sources of variation, detecting outliers, visualizing their data, and designing effective experiments to help answer their research questions.

At the Scientific Research Summit, Nanjing Medical UniversityChen FengThe professor described the significance of statistics as follows: Statistical thinking is unique in scientific research, and its role in promoting the development of empirical disciplines that rely on data as evidence is immeasurable. Therefore, every medical researcher must learn and correctly apply statistical thinking to guide their scientific research and clinical practice.

"Digital Technology" Assists Clinical Research

At this research summit,Zhang FabaoThe Ph.D. delivered an insightful report titled “Top 10 Trends in Medical Research in 2022.” He noted, “In recent years, serious healthcare has been increasingly integrating with technology, with a continuous wave of new medical concepts emerging. Cutting-edge technologies such as the metaverse are drawing closer to the healthcare sector. The metaverse is not merely the virtual reality of previous years; it carries deeper connotations and can serve as a preview of the future world, offering a glimpse into your future self. As physicians, we must not only master clinical knowledge but also develop an awareness of digital technologies, proactively embrace them, and leverage these technologies to better support clinical research.”

Meanwhile, Peking University Clinical Research InstituteYao ChenThe professor noted that innovative digital technologies can address the research pain points of clinicians. For instance, by integrating NLP tools into web-based interactive interfaces, clinicians without programming expertise can extract information from text. Furthermore, models can achieve self-directed dynamic learning and optimization through corpora annotated by clinicians, building upon initial models. In summary, these models enable clinicians to largely overcome the challenges associated with traditional manual data processing.

Department of Scientific Research, Xiangya Hospital of Central South UniversityGuo HuaThe Director shared Xiangya Hospital’s experience in building a clinical research system. In the context of multi-center data management, hospitals should strive to achieve interoperability of scientific research data across regions and medical institutions, establishing standardized, regulated, and openly shared research databases. This approach reduces research costs, shortens research cycles, and enhances research efficiency, thereby truly realizing multi-center sharing of medical research data.

As one of the earliest companies in China dedicated to medical and digital innovation, MedSci leverages its extensive physician platform to provide innovative pharmaceutical enterprises with medical affairs services, digital academic dissemination, and digital clinical research solutions. Centered on evidence-based medicine, MedSci establishes a closed-loop system for the generation, interpretation, and dissemination of evidentiary data for innovative drugs.

"Research and Clinical Practice," 《2021“Annual Research Report” Released

As the reform of the healthcare system deepens, competition among hospitals has become increasingly intense. A hospital’s competitiveness is reflected not only in the quality of its medical care but also in its level of scientific research. Studies have shown that the level of awareness regarding scientific research plays a positive role in enhancing researchers’ enthusiasm and motivation.

To this end, MedSci conducted a relevant survey and released the findings at the summit in the form of the “2021 Annual Research Report” (hereinafter referred to as the “Research Report”). The survey covered more than 10,000 healthcare professionals, including clinicians, nurses, and pharmacists, and examined their current understanding of scientific research, encompassing grant applications, awareness of research knowledge, and the resulting research needs.

From MedSciHuang Ming'aiThe Ph.D. shared key insights from the research report, such as an analysis of medical researchers’ intention to engage in scientific research. According to the survey findings, 84.53% of respondents held a positive attitude toward scientific research.

Dr. Ming'ai Huang, MedSci

Specifically, younger medical researchers exhibit a stronger “willingness” to engage in scientific research, and their enthusiasm signals hope for the future development of science in China. Furthermore, willingness to conduct research varies by educational attainment, with individuals holding higher degrees demonstrating greater inclination toward scientific inquiry. This trend may be attributed to the expanding enrollment in master’s and doctoral programs, enabling an increasing number of medical researchers to reap the benefits derived from scientific research.

What Are the Most Important Factors Influencing the Future Direction of Scientific Research in the Minds of Medical Researchers? “Breaking the Four Dimensions, Scientific Innovation, and Policy Incentives”Huang Ming'aiThe doctor concluded.

Overall, this research report took more than 50 days to complete, from planning to finalization, with multiple rounds of proofreading and revision, and was officially published today. To some extent, this report reflects the perspectives of tens of thousands of medical researchers. We hope that through this report, readers will gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in medical scientific research.
