In 2021, with the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic still reverberating, the entire dental industry was enveloped in a shifting landscape characterized by digital transformation, technological innovation, and the burgeoning emergence of numerous new industries. Amidst profound uncertainty, clinic owners struggled to cope, finding it difficult to leverage their existing knowledge to clearly discern the future direction of the sector.

On January 26, 2022, coinciding with the Little New Year of the Year of the Tiger (Ren Yin), the IDSO Dental Alliance invited numerous leading industry pioneers from both China and abroad, as well as outstanding founders of dental clinics of varying scales from multiple cities, to gather online. Breaking away from the conventional summit format, the event was conducted entirely via live streaming, allowing all dental professionals to celebrate the Little New Year together!

Over 14 hours of uninterrupted content sharing provided dental professionals with excellent outpatient management cases and effective experiences. From a professional perspective, we gained industry insights, introduced advanced management models, and helped every dental colleague grow through exploration, finding management methods adapted to the current environment. With a cumulative total of 51,000 unique viewers and over 350,000 high-quality interactions in the comments section, it successfully earned the title of "Dental Spring Festival Gala"!

Professor Yu Guangyan, Honorary President of the Chinese Stomatological Association, pointed out: The operation and management of private dental practices constitute a crucial component of the overall management system for dental medical institutions; strengthening such management is one of the keys to the healthy development of private dental medical institutions.

In response to this landscape, the Dental Industry Management Summit was launched. On January 26, the “2022 Dental Industry Management Summit,” hosted by the IDSO Dental Alliance and co-hosted by Aoshun Microscopes, with joint support from Henry Schein (China), Straumann Group, Kangtaijian, and Hiteeth, concluded successfully in Beijing.

The summit invited numerous industry scholars and leading experts in the field of dentistry, gathering well-known managers of domestic dental clinics. It innovatively adopted a live online broadcasting format across all major platforms to share classic case studies in clinic management and core elements driving clinic growth, thereby supporting the breakthrough development of dental clinics in 2022.

Outpatient Operations · Resilient Growth

At 9:00 a.m. on January 26, the “2022 Dental Industry Management Summit” officially commenced. Ms. Liu Ran, Vice President of the IDSO Dental Alliance, served as the host of the summit. She formally presented the original intentions behind organizing the event and introduced the distinguished guests in attendance.

As the opening session of the summit, Dr. Sun Yan, founder of the IDSO Dental Alliance, delivered an inspiring keynote address. He began by quoting: “The greatest conflict in the oral healthcare industry lies in the fact that traditional models are encountering explosive growth pressures, yet no clear reference point or direction has emerged for the future, leaving everyone to ‘cross the river by feeling the stones.’” This succinctly highlighted the severe challenges facing the oral healthcare sector. Subsequently, from the perspective of the oral healthcare industry, he interpreted the six key buzzwords of 2021: capitalization, common prosperity, aging population, metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI), normalization of COVID-19, and balancing short-term interests with long-term benefits. Furthermore, he proposed four core development principles for the future of the oral healthcare industry: maintaining a customer-centric approach, returning to the essence of medical care, advocating long-termism, and achieving resilient growth.

Reviewing the global development of the dental industry, China and the United States are in a phase of proactive catch-up. Foreign experience is worth learning from, whether in medical technology or outpatient practice management. At the summit, Dr. Hao Jianjun, Fellow of the American College of Orthodontists and founder of Chicago Smile Dental, brought attendees closer to understanding U.S. chain clinics and the DSO (Dental Support Organization) operational model by introducing the U.S. DSO clinic architecture, interpreting eight key quantitative metrics, and outlining the skills training system. This also allowed us to foresee the future of China’s dental industry through the lens of U.S. dental development.

Revere Healthcare, Embrace Technology! Digitalization and AI are driving transformative changes in the dental industry. Mr. Wu Zhijia, Founder and CEO of LinkCare, provided a detailed analysis of the progress and future of dental digitalization both domestically and internationally, focusing on four key aspects: global trends in the dental industry, digitalization of dental practices, digitalization of operational management and marketing, and the iteration of next-generation digital technologies.

Neither the international macro-environment nor the domestic micro-environment looked promising in 2022. Mr. Zhu Kexi, founder of Yiya Medical Management and inventor of the CPTP healthcare institution operating system, concisely outlined the situation for 2022. In his speech titled “New Drivers for Breakthrough Growth in 2022,” he proposed that practitioners in the dental industry should select the right people, choose the right path, and engage the right personnel. This entails establishing clear positioning, developing standards and building teams based on this positioning, while also emphasizing fiscal and tax compliance as well as employee incentives. He further pointed out that, due to market competition and the impact of centralized procurement, price reductions would become the dominant theme in 2022, and only by establishing clear positioning can dental professionals achieve sustainable development.

Happy Dental Care Group is a renowned national dental chain in China. Ms. Zhang Pei, Vice President of Happy Dental Care Group, oversees more than 40 dental clinics. At the event, she presented the “Iceberg Model” of market competitiveness for dental clinics and discussed how clinics can achieve a balance between medical care and operations, starting with their compensation systems. The session showcased the salary structures for dentists and practice managers (PMs) in dental clinics, integrating short- and medium-term performance incentives to form a comprehensive compensation and performance incentive system for dental clinics.

In addition, guests including Chen Jiangshan, founder of Shenzhen Ci’en Dental; Xiao Meng, founder of Dongguan Zhenmei Stomatology; Lei Hong, founder of Shanxi Leihong Stomatology; Zhang Xiaolei, founder of Nanjing Qincheng Stomatology; and Ji Yueteng, head of the IDSO Dental Alliance Digital Central Consultation Center, shared practical implementation experiences. Capital Enters the Arena: No Construction Without Destruction

In 2021, major renowned capital groups engaged in fierce competition within China’s dental care “arena,” with their investments spanning nearly the entire dental industry chain. The rapid influx of capital, often amounting to tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars, has brought both opportunities and challenges to the dental sector.

At the roundtable forum titled “Private Dental Chains and Capital: Trends and Distance,” Mr. Ma Chunmin, Chairman of Happy Oral Care Medical Group; Mr. Yong Hao, Head of Healthcare Investment in the Infrastructure Investment Department of CICC Capital; Mr. Liu Zeyuan, Director at Taihe Capital; Mr. Huang Zhaobiao, Chairman of Guangzhou Delun Medical Investment Co., Ltd.; Ms. Jin Li, Founder of Hady Myya Chain Dentistry and Partner-Director at the China Soft Power Research Center; and Ms. Wang Ying, Senior Vice President of Happy Oral Care Medical Group, gathered to discuss their perspectives on the future of private dental chains amid national policy environments and capital dynamics. They conducted an in-depth analysis and discussion on the questions, “Why has no unicorn emerged in the hundred-billion-yuan dental market?” and “Can the dental industry produce the next Aier Eye Hospital?”

Amid the industry’s rapid growth, returning to the core values of corporate culture has become an increasingly common aspiration among dental professionals. Mr. Chen Dehao, Founder of Chengdu Jinjiang Simai Dental; Mr. Lu Ming, Director of Shanxi Bocheng Stomatological Hospital; Mr. Zhai Chuanlei, Founder of Henan Bolin Dental Chain; Ms. Qian Lirong, Outstanding Director at Huanle Dental; and Dr. Sun Yan, Founder of the IDSO Dental Alliance, have interpreted dental corporate culture by adopting a mindset of companionship and growth in their approach to employees, while impressing patients with skilled medical care and sincere service, thereby building the core growth engine for their clinics.
