Hong Kong’s Outbreak Sparks Public ConcernOn February 22, the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reported that, as of midnight, Hong Kong recorded 6,211 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 32 additional deaths. The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong reached 66,574. Impacted by the epidemic, medical resources in Hong Kong have become saturated, with most hospitals operating at full capacity.
In the face of the threat posed by the epidemic to the lives and health of Hong Kong residents, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, stated that the steadfast support from the central government is the source of Hong Kong’s confidence in combating the pandemic. Currently, various measures provided by the central government to assist Hong Kong in its anti-epidemic efforts are being implemented one by one. Two batches of mainland medical and epidemic prevention teams have been dispatched to Hong Kong to support the fight against the virus, and construction of the mainland-assisted “Fangcang” shelter hospitals in Hong Kong commenced on the 19th.
Meanwhile, various sectors of society have rallied to support Hong Kong’s pandemic response, joining forces to overcome these challenging times. The digital healthcare service platform WeDoctor recently launched the “WeDoctor Hong Kong Anti-Epidemic Platform,” mobilizing more than 23,000 doctors from the Chinese mainland to provide online assistance. They offer Hong Kong residents free, round-the-clock (24/7) online consultations and public health education on epidemic prevention, working together to combat the pandemic and safeguard the health of our compatriots.

Residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) experiencing health concerns related to epidemic prevention and control can access the “WeDoctor Hong Kong Anti-Epidemic Platform” by scanning a QR code via WeChat or clicking a web link. This platform provides free online medical consultations and scientifically grounded guidance on epidemic protection. Users can also download, free of charge, the bilingual (Chinese-English) version of the Handbook on Prevention and Control of Pneumonia Caused by Novel Coronavirus Infection. This initiative enables HKSAR residents to conveniently consult doctors from home during the pandemic, thereby effectively alleviating the immense pressure on Hong Kong’s overstretched healthcare system and minimizing the risk of cross-infection associated with in-person visits.
Benefiting from the rapid development of digital healthcare, digital healthcare service platforms have become a significant force in the fight against the pandemic. At the onset of the global outbreak in 2020, WeDoctor launched the “WeDoctor Global Anti-Pandemic Platform,” providing free anti-pandemic services to overseas Chinese and international friends in more than 220 countries and regions, including the United States and Italy. The platform received official endorsements from over 170 Chinese embassies and consulates abroad. Data shows that more than 76,000 individuals have received free consultation services on the “WeDoctor Global Anti-Pandemic Platform,” with cumulative visits exceeding 50 million. The newly launched “WeDoctor Hong Kong Anti-Pandemic Platform” is built upon this global infrastructure. Many of its physicians have been involved in domestic and global pandemic response efforts through the platform since the outbreak began in 2020, accumulating extensive experience in online consultations, psychological counseling, and health education for residents during the pandemic. Among these physicians, some have served more than 10,000 users cumulatively.
WeDoctor is China’s largest digital healthcare service platform. As of December 31, 2021, the platform had connected to more than 7,900 hospitals in China, covering over 95% of the country’s Grade A tertiary hospitals, and engaged 300,000 physicians. It operates 33 internet hospitals and provides users with medical and health maintenance services through the deep integration of online and offline healthcare resources.
Support from all sectors of the mainland has brought great warmth to Hong Kong residents, who have taken to social media to express their gratitude. Carrie Lam also stated that, looking ahead, she is firmly convinced that with the concerted efforts of Hong Kong citizens and all sectors of society, the epidemic will eventually recede.
