In the post-pandemic era, the Healthy China strategy has accelerated, with growing national health awareness. Emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain are speeding up the development of digital health, making it a key trend to empower the health industry with digital technologies. Healthcare coverage is shifting from a disease-centered model to a health-oriented service model aimed at promoting wellness. Life and health have become core concerns for the public, bringing significant transformation and opportunities to the global health industry, including in China.

On February 18, Li Shengli, CEO of Fosun Health, was invited to attend the “Hainan Free Trade Port Digital Healthcare Ecosystem Conference,” hosted by the Hainan Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Hainan Provincial Health Commission. At the event, he shared Fosun Health’s insights and trend forecasts for the broader healthcare sector.

Emerging at the Right Time: Favorable Policies, High-Potential Sector, and Persistent User Pain Points

In recent years, with the introduction of multiple favorable national policies and the normalization of COVID-19 prevention and control, public demand for higher-quality healthcare services has continued to rise. Against the backdrop of dual tailwinds from both policy and market conditions, the healthcare sector demonstrates significant growth potential. According to a Frost & Sullivan report, China’s internet healthcare market is projected to maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37% over the next five years, with its market size expected to exceed RMB 4 trillion by 2030.

Li Shengli believes that while the internet healthcare industry has experienced explosive growth amid the pandemic, three core pain points remain urgently in need of resolution. First, internet healthcare currently retains a strong consumer-oriented character with very weak medical attributes, remaining at the stage of “light services.” It is limited to non-core medical activities such as follow-up consultations and prescription issuance, online consultations, and online medication purchases, failing to fundamentally meet patient needs. Second, the service scenarios offered by internet healthcare remain overly simplistic; most companies have merely shifted offline operations online without addressing the complex pain points across pre-diagnosis, intra-diagnosis, and post-diagnosis stages in various disease areas. Finally, “treating existing diseases and preventing potential ones” represents a composite health need and a dynamic evolutionary process. Compared with single or bundled services, one-stop, comprehensive healthcare services covering the entire lifecycle are inevitably the future trend.

Driven by profound insights into society, the industry, and users, Fosun Health comprehensively launched its strategic upgrade in 2021. Aiming to fully leverage its core industrial advantages in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, insurance, health consumption, and digital intelligence technology, Fosun Health seeks to uncover and unleash the multiplier effect of the Fosun ecosystem. With healthcare at its core, the company is committed to building a medical-grade, all-scenario, one-stop health ecosystem.

Healthcare-Centric: The Industrial Internet Model for Healthcare Driven by Technological Innovation and Centered on Patients

Unlike platforms built on traffic-driven mindsets and “light-service” models, Fosun Health has been grounded in healthcare from the outset. Leveraging its deep industrial accumulation in physical healthcare over many years, as well as its integrated business layout spanning online and offline channels and both in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings, it has streamlined complexity to consistently build a patient-centric health ecosystem. Li Shengli specifically emphasized, “Internet-based healthcare should be developed in conjunction with physical hospitals. Our extensive, professionally leading offline physical healthcare network is one of our core advantages.”

According to public information, the predecessor of Fosun Health was “Fosun Medical,” a subsidiary of Fosun Pharma. As early as 2011, the company began actively exploring and laying out its offline healthcare services industry, focusing on the five major economic zones: the Greater Bay Area, the Yangtze River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Central China, and the Chengdu-Chongqing region.

Building a Regional Medical Platform and a Cluster of High-Level Hospitals. In the 2021 Ailipei Top 100 Hospitals Ranking in China, Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital, under Fosun Health, topped the list for four consecutive years, while also ranking second in overall medical strength among the top 100 hospitals. Leveraging this medical expertise and heritage, Fosun Health was established in 2021 by integrating online and offline resources, officially embarking on the creation of a health ecosystem.

On the supply side, Fosun Health leverages technological innovation to empower digital capabilities in healthcare service delivery. In collaboration with industry leader Winning Health, it jointly develops and builds a smart healthcare cloud platform. Based on this platform, Fosun Health creates benchmark digital, integrated, and intelligent smart hospitals, gradually connecting medical institutions both within and outside its ecosystem. By implementing unified management of hospitals, physicians, and users, it achieves seamless online-to-offline integration, providing one-stop solutions that cover comprehensive scenarios including medical care, pharmaceuticals, insurance, and health management.

On the demand side, as a key member of the Fosun ecosystem, Fosun Health continuously identifies and fulfills the health needs of users within the ecosystem. It has established strategic partnerships with Babytree, Fosun United Health Insurance, Lao Miao Gold, and Tong Han Chun Tang through a Customer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) model. These collaborations will drive in-depth cooperation across multiple sectors, including maternal and infant consumption, beauty and wellness, tourism and leisure, commercial distribution, and insurance services. By leveraging the diverse multiplier effects of the ecosystem, Fosun Health aims to lead proactive family health management.

Li Shengli stated that, as a strategic layout in healthcare and wellness for Fosun Group and a perfect testament to FC2M’s industrial internet strategy, Fosun Health will play a crucial role within the Fosun ecosystem. “Making families healthier and lives better” is not only the original aspiration of Fosun Health but also its commitment to society. Fosun Health will remain committed to doing what is right, what is challenging, and what requires long-term accumulation. With medicine as its core, goodwill as its foundation, and technology as its distinguishing feature, it will continue to integrate high-quality resources across medical care, pharmaceuticals, insurance, and wellness within the Fosun system. It will focus on strengthening medical capabilities, adhere to a patient-centered approach, lead proactive health management throughout the entire life cycle, actively explore and enhance digital capabilities in the industry, drive continuous innovation and empowerment, share value chains with industry stakeholders, and build a medical-grade, all-scenario, one-stop health ecosystem.
