【Pharmaceutical Network Industry DynamicsRecently, Novo Nordisk announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. According to a joint statement from both parties, the core objective of this collaboration is "to more efficiently utilize AI tools and capabilities to analyze complex datasets, identify promising new drug candidates, and shorten the time it takes for drugs to progress from the research and development phase to clinical application," while also enhancing the efficiency of production, supply chain, and commercial operations.

It is reported that the pilot projects of the two companies will cover the fields of R&D, manufacturing, and commercial operations, with plans to complete full integration by the end of 2026. In addition, OpenAI will also assist Novo Nordisk in training its global workforce, enhancing AI literacy, and boosting productivity across all departments.

Industry insiders say that the strategic cooperation between Novo Nordisk and OpenAI is actually a microcosm of the current wave of collaboration between the pharmaceutical industry and the artificial intelligence sector. In recent years, an increasing number of pharmaceutical companies have been integrating AI into their business processes to improve operational efficiency and accelerate the lengthy R&D process. Since 2026, both multinational leaders like Eli Lilly and Sanofi as well as China-based pharmaceutical enterprises have been accelerating the deep integration of AI technology across the entire chain from R&D to commercialization.

On January 5, Sanofi announced a new strategic partnership with Earendil Labs. According to the disclosure, Earendil Labs' artificial intelligence drug discovery platform will be applied to multiple autoimmune and inflammatory disease projects, and the bispecific antibody candidates generated through the collaboration will be led by Sanofi for subsequent development and global commercialization.

According to reports, since Sanofi announced ALL in AI in 2023, it has been frequently reaching BD deals with AI + pharmaceutical companies worldwide. Prior to this collaboration, Sanofi also entered into a BD cooperation with Earendil Labs, which included an upfront payment of $125 million and a total value exceeding $1.8 billion, securing global exclusive rights to two bispecific antibody candidate drugs.

On January 12, NVIDIA and Eli Lilly announced a collaboration to jointly invest $1 billion over the next five years to establish a new joint AI laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, aimed at accelerating the AI drug discovery process. Previously, in October 2025, Eli Lilly announced plans to adopt NVIDIA's AI system to build an "AI factory" and deploy over 1,000 of NVIDIA’s flagship Grace Blackwell chips to construct a supercomputer.

In recent years, besides NVIDIA, Eli Lilly has also partnered with OpenAI, as well as AI companies such as Insilico Medicine and XtalPi. Among these, XtalPi has provided Eli Lilly with an AI-driven bispecific antibody engineering platform to accelerate the development of bispecific antibody drugs, while Insilico Medicine's Pharma.AI platform will assist Eli Lilly in generating, designing, and optimizing candidate compounds.

January 13th, AstraZeneca announced the acquisition of biomedical artificial intelligence company Modella AI. The two parties will expand their existing cooperation to jointly promote the application of multimodal AI foundational models and AI agents in AstraZeneca's global oncology portfolio.

Data shows that Modella AI is a biomedical imaging artificial intelligence developer dedicated to creating innovative AI models that integrate multi-modal biomarker data to enhance diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment processes. After the acquisition, Modella AI's generative and agent AI platforms will be integrated into AstraZeneca's oncology drug R&D system to help accelerate clinical development.
