Computer, internet, and mobile application technologies have fundamentally transformed the way people live and interact in recent decades. In response to humanity’s enduring imperative for healthier and more comfortable living, there remains a vast blue-ocean market worth hundreds of billions yet to be tapped through digital transformation and intelligent applications in the fields of life sciences and materials science.

Currently, the vast majority of drug and materials design relies primarily on physical models. Meanwhile, data-driven AI applications are playing an increasingly important role. However, most R&D data in the life and materials sciences remains confined to paper records and unstructured Excel and Word files, hindering the practical implementation of AI solutions. At present, most AI applications are still limited to external public databases. Therefore, digital transformation for enterprises and R&D institutions is urgently needed.

From the experience of Chuangteng users,Digital transformation of R&D can help enterprises reduce experimental repetition rates by approximately 30% to 40%, save around 20% to 30% in material and reagent costs, and enhance the overall efficiency and capability of R&D project management.

Building on the foundation of digital transformation, leveraging data-driven theoretical simulations and AI applications to shift from traditional trial-and-error experimental R&D to model-based iteration, while establishing an innovation paradigm centered on experimental validation, can revolutionize R&D efficiency, more accurately guide innovation directions, and enhance decision-making capabilities. This has increasingly become a key strategic objective pursued by enterprises and research institutions.

This is also the reason why CADD (Computer-Aided Drug Design) and AIDD (AI Drug Discovery & Design), as well as the Materials Genome Initiative, have gained significant momentum in recent years.

Currently, CADD, AIDD, and molecular simulations for materials are primarily applied in the early stages of drug discovery and materials R&D. Due to high barriers to entry, these techniques are mastered by only a few simulation experts, resulting in significant limitations in their application. Furthermore, data-driven AI applications in pharmaceutical CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls) as well as in materials processing, formulation, and quality research remain in their nascent stages.

How can digital and AI technologies be leveraged to lower the barriers to intelligent innovation in life sciences and materials science, thereby transforming traditional R&D models? Perhaps iSoftStone Technology, a well-established enterprise with a cumulative client base of over 1,200, can draw on its extensive industry insights and customer application experience to innovatively propose a comprehensive solution powered by cutting-edge SaaS, AI, and mobile application technologies.

Established for over 20 years, twice “reborn,” serving 1,200+ clients

Founded in the early 2000s, Chemexpress is a mobile internet enterprise that provides a science data-driven intelligent innovation engine for R&D innovation and quality compliance in the fields of life sciences and materials science. With over 20 years of establishment, Chemexpress has accumulated more than 1,200 clients, including domestic life science companies, materials science enterprises, and key research institutes, ranking first in the industry.

In the early 2000s, both the mobile internet industry and the life sciences industry in China were in their nascent stages.Founder, President, and CEO Cao Lingxiao stated“Prior to 2000, I worked for five years at the Laboratory of Computer Chemistry, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducting research on scientific data acquisition and applications, as well as the application of Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) in pesticide innovation.”Therefore, I can be considered among the first batch of researchers in China to use molecular simulation software for drug design.

“During my research, I discovered that technologies such as molecular simulation of drug molecules would transform the existing R&D and production models in China’s pharmaceutical and materials industries, making it equally important to promote and apply these technologies. Consequently, I became one of the earliest technical and sales professionals in China dedicated to promoting and applying molecular simulation and drug design software. In 2000, together with several colleagues, I founded Chemexpress Technology. The company initially focused primarily on the promotion and application of molecular simulation and drug design software, and later expanded its business to include data-driven solutions and management software.”

Since its establishment, Chuanteng Technology has been deeply engaged in the fields of digitalization and intelligence for over 20 years, serving more than 1,200 clients and significantly advancing the application standards and innovation capabilities of molecular simulation and drug design in China. To keep pace with the rapid developments in the life sciences and computer industries, Chuanteng Technology has undergone two “rebirths” over the past two decades.

The first instance occurred between 2003 and 2004, when Chuangteng Technology undertook a strategic divestment of its business segments. In the early days, molecular simulation software had to run on expensive workstation-class computers. Two decades ago, a single workstation not only occupied a significant amount of space but also cost anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of US dollars. With the advancement of software, workstation-class computers have gradually been phased out by PCs and Linux servers.

In the face of the era’s transformation, iSoftStone Technologies decisively and resolutely divested its hardware-related businesses at that time, allowing the company to focus more exclusively on its core domains. In addition, although iSoftStone Technologies sold databases in its early days, it subsequently eliminated its database-related operations as well, given the low value-added nature of the database business following the divestiture of its hardware segment.

The second instance occurred in 2016, when Chuangteng Technology recognized that merely promoting foreign technologies could no longer meet the rapid development of the industry. Consequently, the company embarked on a comprehensive transformation, shifting from introducing overseas technologies to independently developing and innovating a new generation of data-driven intelligent application platforms.

Cao Lingxiao described the transformation as follows: “To truly achieve this ‘transformation,’ it was as if we had become an entirely new company. Chemexpress had already spent over a decade developing in its previous domain and had accumulated certain achievements, which made it difficult for many colleagues to quickly step out of their comfort zones. However, our core staff and outstanding employees chose to undergo this painful, profound, and exhilarating metamorphosis alongside the company. United and striving forward, they were joined by more key elites who brought their dreams to Chemexpress. Through persistent innovation and leveraging Chemexpress’s extensive accumulation of customer experience, we successfully achieved a remarkable transition toward independent innovation.”
