Currently, there are thousands of startups in the global women’s health market, spanning numerous niche segments such as maternity and parenting support, reproductive health, menstrual care, behavioral health, and primary and preventive care. However, the proliferation of product categories has given rise to a direct challenge:Market FragmentationFor instance, a product may meet all of a woman’s health needs during pregnancy, but once she enters the next stage of life, she must still seek out new beauty and wellness solutions tailored to her changing needs.

“Many tech companies in chronic disease management, mental health, and other fields have not strictly adhered to female and male”DifferentiationThere was no dedicated product R&D, nor were efforts made to optimize the user experience specifically for women.Personalizationservices,” said Qi Hong Bu, Chief Operating Officer of FemTec Health Asia.

FemTec Health was founded in May 2020 by Dr. Kimon Angelides, the founder of Livongo, went public in October 2021, and is headquartered in Texas, USA, dedicated to creating for womenOne-Stop, Full-Lifecycle Personalized Health and Beauty Solutions, setting a new standard for continuous women’s healthcare. To date, FemTec Health has completed three acquisitions and raised $38 million in financing.

Established just a year ago, how has FemTec Health managed to advance so rapidly? How does it address the pain points and challenges in the women’s health market? Can it disrupt this vast blue ocean of women’s health? With these questions in mind, VCBeat interviewed Bu Qihong, Chief Operating Officer for Asia at FemTec Health.

Optimizing the BiomeAI platform is the greatest competitive advantage.

FemTec Health has built a one-stop service platform for women’s health and beauty. As the name suggests, it aims to meet all consumer needs on the platform. In reality, however, FemTec Health’s full-lifecycle solutions do not attempt to cover everything; instead, they prioritize key areas while letting go of minor ones. “We first seek entry points in areas that are well-suited for digital integration, where we possess globally leading technologies and core competencies,” introduced Bu Qihong.

This entry point is the BiomeAI platform, for which FemTec Health is currently applying for a patent. The platform covers therapeutic areas including women’s specialty care, health prevention, reproductive care, sexual health, mental health, and chronic disease management. By leveraging artificial intelligence and deep machine learning technologies to analyze holistic data—such as consumer, genetic, microbiome, and biometric information—it generates personalized health profiles for users and translates these data into tailored healthcare services delivered to every woman.

Specifically, the BiomeAI platform operates on the foundation of various testing databases. “We essentially cover all home-based testing technologies and products you can imagine, with female hormone testing being among the most advanced. Users can conveniently, efficiently, and cost-effectively screen for various diseases caused by hormonal abnormalities by performing a finger-prick blood sample at home and mailing it to a laboratory. Previously, the average time from disease onset to diagnosis for these conditions ranged from 8 to 15 years. The root cause lies in the fact that many women who are not trying to conceive lack awareness of monitoring their hormone levels, and the market has lacked high-quality home testing tools,” said Bu Qihong.

Furthermore, targeting female users across different life stages such as pregnancy and menopause, FemTec Health has launched a range of testing products for female gut health, vaginal health, genetics, and skin conditions, along with real-time monitoring medical devices (capable of monitoring core body temperature, skin surface temperature, sleep patterns, heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood oxygen levels). Consequently, the BiomeAI platform not only provides women with continuous, personalized, and comprehensive health services and products by building a female-specific database and intelligent predictive models, but also assists industry ecosystem partners such as Johnson & Johnson and Unilever in achieving precise product and market positioning.

To achieve rapid growth, FemTec Health has successively acquired the renowned subscription-based beauty e-commerce platform Birchbox, as well as Mira Beauty, the world’s first universal store and beauty collaboration hub. Additionally, FemTec Health acquired Liquid Grids, a social platform for the healthcare industry with over 1.5 million members, designed to foster the development of women’s communities.

Following the completion of three acquisitions, FemTec Health now boasts over 10 million members and is set to launch its innovative products, including the relaunch of Birchbox, with a strategic shift in focus from beauty products to personalized skincare recommendations and wellness offerings powered by its BiomeAI platform. Bu Qihong expressed strong confidence, stating, “Our greatest advantage lies in effectively developing and optimizing the BiomeAI platform to truly deliver a one-stop solution for women’s health and beauty across their entire lifecycle.”

Livongo Founders Embark on a New Journey

“To achieve this goal, two key elements are essential: first, substantial funding; and second, a strong team, comprising a technology R&D team with years of industry experience and a deep understanding of women’s health needs, as well as a management team capable of leveraging global medical resources,” added Bu Qihong.

FemTec Health’s team is a case in point. Founder Dr. Kimon Angelides is a successful serial entrepreneur with decades of experience in healthcare, health, corporate partnerships, and consumer goods across both public and private companies, wielding significant influence particularly in the digital health sector.

He has successively founded Livongo (NASDAQ: LVGO, which went public in July 2019, raising $355 million in its initial public offering at a valuation of $4.4 billion, and was later acquired by Teladoc for $18.5 billion), Vivante Health, DiabetesAmerica (which pioneered bundled payments, vendor risk models, and remote patient monitoring at diabetes centers), and mAbGen (a cancer biotechnology company that collaborated with the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center and was later acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals).

Angelides has also assembled a female-led team, including Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Kimberly Capone, who brings over 13 years of experience at Johnson & Johnson, where she previously served as the Head of the Microbiome Platform for J&J Consumer Health. Her appointment has set the product direction for FemTec Health, emphasizing the integration of genomics with digital technologies.

When discussing Dr. Angelides’ rationale for launching a new venture in the field of women’s health, Bu Qihong shared, “In fact, whether in China or abroad, women are responsible for 80% of household health-related decisions. Therefore, our ultimate goal is to build a data-driven, personalized, full-lifecycle health solution that serves not only women but also men. It so happens that Dr. Angelides and Dr. Capone share the same vision, and both bring deep technical expertise and extensive industry experience.”

In terms of funding, FemTec Health secured $38 million in seed capital at its inception, with investors including Unilever Ventures, Shiseido, Viking Global, and Sany Capital. FemTec Health currently maintains offices in Houston, New York, San Diego, London, Barcelona, Athens, and Shanghai. The company employs over 150 people, 80% of whom are women, and continues to expand rapidly.

“I have found that my team members have had a profound influence on me, particularly Dr. Angelides. Now in his seventies, he remains deeply focused on understanding market demands and has dedicated decades to research and development with unwavering passion for his work. He leads a simple life and has not rested on the laurels of his achievements at his previous company; instead, he strives to leverage resources to improve the lives of more people. Regardless of the outcome, I believe that embodying such spirit is essential to accomplishing anything meaningful,” said Bu Qihong, reflecting on her deep impressions since joining FemTec Health.

Omni-channel Collaboration, Full-series R&D

It is understood that FemTec Health’s products and services are distributed through multiple sales channels, with differing strategies adopted in China and overseas. In international markets, FemTec Health has implemented a direct-to-consumer (DTC) model, a subscription-based model, and a business-to-business (B2B) model involving channel partners such as large employers and health insurance companies.

In China, FemTec Health is currently focusing primarily on entering the consumer market by building a foundation of rigorous medical data. The company is in discussions with industry partners such as Johnson & Johnson, Unilever, and medical aesthetics institutions to provide services and support, thereby reaching consumers and delivering personalized health and beauty solutions across their entire lifecycle.

Next, FemTec Health will also launch a full range of verified safe and effective beauty and natural healthcare products for women of all ages, as well as wearable devices for preconception and pregnancy monitoring, based on the BiomeAI platform. It will initiate comprehensive research and development of novel therapeutic drugs for vaginal, skin, and hair health in women, providing fully digital health/telemedicine services in gynecology, dermatology, behavioral health, aesthetics, and nutrition. These services will cover the monitoring, intervention, and treatment of chronic diseases across various stages of women's lives, including adolescence, pregnancy and childbirth, and menopause.

It has been said that the women’s health sector remains a tranquil blue ocean, awaiting more stones to be cast in to create larger ripples. Yet the emergence of FemTec Health may well be enough to stir up the entire fragmented market. Regardless, the women’s health sector is overall moving in a positive direction. It is our hope that every woman striving in her daily life can enjoy the warmth that follows the dawn.
