Among China's next-generation innovative drugs, cell therapy isOne of the fields most likely to propel China’s innovative drugs to the global forefront.

The number of clinical trials on cell therapies conducted in China has exceeded 500.It ranks first in China in terms of the number of innovative drug R&D projects, while also accounting for more than half of global cell therapies.Meanwhile, Legend Biotech’s BCMA-targeted CAR-T therapy received FDA approval for market launch.LetChina Takes the Lead in Global New Drug Development for the First Time

China’s Cell Therapies See Unprecedented Growth. The cell therapy industry is also experiencing a surge of activity, with changes occurring across all fronts—technological innovation, investment and financing, and commercial partnerships—much like the flapping of butterfly wings stirring up waves across the Pacific:

Capital AspectsThe booming development of the cell therapy industry continues to attract substantial capital inflows,Even in the first quarter of 2022, amid a sharp correction in the secondary capital markets and widespread talk of a “capital winter,” investment enthusiasm in the cell therapy sector remained robust.

However, the direction of investment has undergone substantial changes.CAR-T therapies mired in cutthroat competition are likely to face a cold reception, while novel cell therapies such as CAR-NK, TIL, and TCR-T, along with companies integrating cutting-edge biotechnologies, have become the new favorites of capital.

Technical Aspects, In the face of the challenges and limitations of existing autologous CAR-T therapies, scientists are venturing into the field of novel cell therapies,Amid the interstices of iterative advancements in cell therapy, leading enterprises in the new generation of cell therapies are emerging.

IASO Biotherapeutics, a Cell Therapy Company in the First Tier, while maintaining its leading edge in hematologic malignancy R&D, it continues to exert strong efforts in solid tumors and universal cell therapies;Xingyiang IPS-CAR-NK, Tiankeya TCR-TAs emerging cell therapy companies garner significant attention from the industry, enterprises applying new technologies such as synthetic biology and chemistry to cell therapy continue to emerge; in the CDMO sector,PuXin Biologics is a leading CDMO specializing in cell-based therapeutics,It is also one of the few companies in China with service capabilities covering the full-process process development, IND filing, registration clinical trials, and commercial production of immune cell products such as CAR-T, TCR-T, and CAR-NK, as well as stem cell products.

Collaboration: In recent years, the number of collaborative developments and mergers and acquisitions in the field of cell therapy has increased significantly.According to statistics, there were 24 collaborative development projects in cell and gene therapy in 2020 alone, with a total transaction value of $11.2 billion. From 2021 to early this year, multiple domestic and international collaborations in the cell therapy field have been successively reached.

The case of Legend Biotech and Johnson & Johnson joining forces to propel the U.S. launch of their product, ciltacabtagene autoleucel, demonstrates—If cell therapy biotech companies can seize the opportunity to collaborate withStrategic alliances between major pharmaceutical companies will undoubtedly significantly accelerate the development and commercialization of cell therapy drugs.

China’s innovative drug sector is advancing at a rapid pace, with the landscape transforming significantly every five years.Following the respective approvals and market launches of the autologous CAR-T therapies from Fosun Kite, JW Therapeutics, and Legend Biotech in domestic and international markets, China’s cell therapy industry has entered its next stage of development.Leading next-generation cell therapy companies are on the rise, where technological innovation, fundraising capabilities, and business collaboration prowess are all indispensable.

From 19:00 to 20:30 on April 23, Qingsong Club’s online live broadcast program “Qingsong Bio Friends’ Stories“Leading Companies in Next-Generation Cell Therapy,” featuring an online “High-Level Dialogue” with Zheng Biao, Chief Scientific Officer of Caribou Biosciences; Zhu Yi, CEO of Puxin Biology; and Zhang Liang, Partner at Yuyin Medical Fund.

Some of the discussion topics are as follows:

  • As we entered 2022, what were the changing trends in investment within the cell therapy sector? Which areas attracted investment, and which ones no longer did?

  • How Should Entrepreneurs Respond to the Dramatic Changes in the Primary and Secondary Capital Markets?

  • In Which Field Will the Next Generation of Leading Cell Therapy Companies Emerge?

  • Can Emerging Therapies Such as CAR-NK, TIL, and TCR-T Overtake on the Bend? How Do They Surpass CAR-T Therapy?

  • What are the respective challenges behind the development of various novel cell therapies and emerging biotechnologies?

  • What New Collaboration Trends and Strategic Approaches Are Emerging in the Field of Cell Therapy?
