R&L Medical: Tapping into a Billion-Dollar Blue Ocean by Delivering End-to-End Innovative Solutions for Wound Management

Where lies the correct investment direction when secondary market liquidity is insufficient, the market slumps into a downturn, and even the investment logics of past years risk being falsified and overturned? This is not only a concern for the general public but also a perplexing issue for professionals.

Looking back on China’s path of industrial transformation and upgrading, it is undoubtedly a history of the continuous evolution of domestic substitution. From the localized rise of China’s manufacturing industry in the 1980s to the domestic substitution in the internet sector since the new millennium, innovation-driven changes benchmarked against developed countries have thoroughly transformed the lives of Chinese people. As times evolve, a new wave of domestic substitution has begun to penetrate high-end manufacturing. “Industrial transformation is also an iteration of emerging opportunities. The localization of high-end manufacturing is an irreversible trend in China’s economic development and has been defined by many industry insiders as a deterministic investment logic. Among these, the affordable domestic substitution in the high-end medical sector, which is most closely related to public well-being, stands out as one of the key areas worthy of investment,” stated the founder of R&L Medical in an interview with VCBeat.

How can one identify directions with certain future growth amidst the complex and fragmented subsectors of the healthcare industry? Some inspiration may be drawn from the development histories of multinational healthcare giants. Johnson & Johnson Medical originated from the “black technology” of sterile gauze over 130 years ago, while Japan’s Terumo Corporation began with a small yet innovative red thermometer. By anchoring in a niche segment with substantial market potential and rapid growth, leveraging unique technologies to stand out among competitors, establishing a solid foothold, and then expanding into other subsectors, these companies eventually grew into commercial behemoths. In China, the high-end wound care market and R&L Medical, which has been deeply engaged in this field for many years, represent a typical example of such a combination.

At its inception, R&L Medical strategically selected wound management as its entry point, deliberately avoiding the low-end market dominated by non-woven fabrics and cotton gauze, which is already highly monopolized, and partially stepping back from the fiercely competitive mid-tier market characterized by a wide array of functional dressings. By taking a high-ground approach and leveraging its proprietary technology, the company provides comprehensive solutions for infected and hard-to-heal wounds, ranging from precise debridement to post-healing prevention and care, thereby establishing its position in the wound management sector. In recent years, with the rise in orthopedic implant surgeries, managing and preventing infections associated with orthopedic implants has become an increasingly challenging issue. R&L Medical’s leading technological reserves in this field have further solidified its market position.

Strategic Layout Across Three Major Business Segments: From Import Substitution to Surpassing Imports

Overall, R&L Medical is built on the foundation of making professional products universally accessible and is oriented toward the consumerization of medical products. It has already covered the entire workflow of wound management, ranging from precise debridement, infection control, exudate management, and healing promotion to scar treatment.Forming three major business segments: precision surgery, advanced nursing, and healthy living, with a portfolio of more than ten products.

In the precision surgery segment, the hydrodynamic precision debridement system, Mach Blade®, is its flagship product.

In traditional surgical debridement, instruments such as scalpels or ultrasonic scalpels are typically used to remove harmful substances from the wound surface, including necrotic tissue, blood clots, and infectious contaminants. However, this approach often presents a dilemma: either incomplete removal of necrotic tissue or excessive excision of healthy tissue. In particular, the inability to promptly clear infected tissue using conventional debridement methods constitutes a major challenge in postoperative infection control.

R&L Medical’s Hydrodynamic Precision Debridement System, the Machete®, systematically addresses these challenges. According to Wang Lekang, R&D Director at R&L Medical, “The Machete® achieves precision debridement of soft tissue at a fineness comparable to human hair, utilizing an ultrasonic water jet exceeding Mach 1.3.” During the debridement process, an ultra-high negative pressure zone forms around the ultrasonic water jet, aspirating and removing the excised infected tissue. This approach prevents secondary contamination of the wound bed, effectively resolving the challenges associated with precise debridement and secondary infections.

According to statistics, China performs nearly 30 million surgical procedures annually, with millions of cases requiring treatment via precise debridement techniques. This represents an immensely large market with urgent unmet demand. However, currently available precise debridement products on the market are expensive; therefore, achieving a favorable cost-performance ratio is key to enabling this therapeutic technology to serve the broader market.

After years of research, R&L Medical has overcome various technical challenges associated with the MachKnife®, achieving successful mass production while effectively controlling costs. Currently, clinical trials for the MachKnife® are being actively conducted at multiple renowned centers across China, under the leadership of Academician Xia Zhaofan, Director of the Burn Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital. It is expected that this technology will soon become widely accessible, empowering healthcare professionals and providing patients with safe and effective treatment.

The flagship product of the advanced nursing business segment is Portcare®, a pocket-sized, disposable, portable negative pressure wound therapy system., it adopts the “disposable device + single-use consumables” model.

Compared with traditional high-negative-pressure vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) systems designed for drainage and the moderately negative-pressure wound care systems (NPWT) that have gained popularity in recent years for promoting granulation tissue growth, Portcare® is not only compact and portable but also provides a micro-negative-pressure environment clinically proven to be more conducive to wound healing, making it a powerful tool for treating chronic or hard-to-heal wounds.

Moreover, the product features a unique design at the dressing end, which evaporates most of the moisture from wound exudate into the air through a highly breathable top film. This eliminates the pain point of previous two negative pressure technologies that required carrying malodorous collection canisters, thereby facilitating perioperative movement rehabilitation and promoting easier wound healing for patients.

R&L Medical stated that Portcare®, as one of the flagship products for import substitution, may reshape the existing negative pressure therapy market landscape and provide assistance to tens of millions of patients in China suffering from pressure ulcers, bedsores, and diabetic foot wounds.

Mr. Wang Lekang, Director, introduced that R&L Medical’s professional medical device products—both currently launched and those to be continuously released in the future across its two major pipelines of precision surgery and advanced care—will uphold the core principle of making specialized products widely accessible. With a steadfast commitment to addressing clinical needs, the company serves tens of thousands of professional medical institutions at all levels throughout China.

As living standards have gradually improved in recent years, an increasing number of professional medical products have entered everyday consumer life. The consumerization of medical products has become a notable trend, particularly in the field of skin health and care. Leveraging its technical expertise accumulated in professional wound management, R&L Medical supports the development of various innovative products within its healthy lifestyle segment.

For example, its QuanYu® novel artificial skin wound dressing, launched last year, resolves the long-standing “impossible triangle” challenge of traditional non-woven dressings, which cannot simultaneously provide bacterial barrier, waterproofing, and breathability. By mimicking the skin’s moist environment, the product helps alleviate pain, accelerate healing, and minimize scarring. According to Wang Lekang, the QuanYu® dressing allows users to bathe and swim while promoting faster, scar-free healing. Since its market launch, the product has received enthusiastic responses.

In addition, regarding the healthy living segment, Director Wang Lekang stated, “R&L Medical will also launch a series of innovative tech products, including the BabyFace™ Anti-Wrinkle Beauty Lotion, which can smooth fine lines around the eyes in a single application.” He expressed confidence that through these innovative product offerings, R&L Medical would evolve from being merely a medical product supplier serving tens of thousands of professional healthcare institutions into a comprehensive enterprise capable of reaching hundreds of millions of consumers through diverse channels and business models.

Adhere to the dual-wheel drive strategy, connecting professional clients and the consumer market

R&L Medical’s product portfolio spans both the professional and consumer markets, with core offerings in wound care and skin management in each segment. Behind this diverse product lineup is a multidimensional R&D team, comprising senior engineers with over a decade of experience, overseas-educated postdoctoral researchers, and technical specialists from prestigious universities.

Director Wang Lekang stated, “Leveraging the increasingly sophisticated advanced manufacturing systems in China and globally, combined with our own R&D capabilities, we have established R&L Medical’s unique R&D technology tree. By applying an expanding array of mature manufacturing techniques to the medical field and continuously broadening diverse clinical application scenarios, we are building a sustained source of product innovation and technological advancement.”

R&L Medical maintains a relatively open R&D approach, welcoming input from various industries while maintaining overall strategic direction, with the aim of fostering new synergies and outcomes.

Beyond leveraging its R&D team to create high-quality products, R&L Medical has also established the R&L Health Academy. Through diverse formats ranging from articles and video series to podcasts and live streams, and by evolving from independent operations to collaborative initiatives with industry peers, the Academy not only disseminates accurate health concepts but also incorporates extensive professional clinical feedback to drive the upgrading and iteration of existing products. As a key vehicle for advancing R&L Medical’s dual-wheel strategy, the R&L Health Academy will continue to strengthen its role as a bridge connecting the professional and consumer markets. By integrating online and offline channels and fostering cross-sector collaborations, it aims to facilitate mutual integration and reciprocal benefits between the professional and consumer markets.
