From Capital Infusion to Innovation-Driven Growth: How Chinese Biotechs Make the 'Leap of Faith'

May 13, 2022 14:49 CST Updated 14:49

As China’s healthcare payment system reform continues to deepen, the development trajectories of many Chinese biotech companies have been affected to varying degrees. To address this challenge, some biotechs have leveraged their accumulated strengths to promote innovative drugs into the global market through license-out deals, thereby realizing a new development pattern characterized by mutual reinforcement between domestic and international dual circulation. Others have targeted major unmet medical needs within China, shortening drug R&D cycles through license-in arrangements to consolidate their competitive advantages and further enrich their R&D pipelines.

Data shows that since 2017, the number of cross-border transactions involving Chinese biotech companies has risen rapidly, with transaction amounts increasing day by day. Moreover, there is a growing trend of collaborations focused on early-stage innovative projects or technology platforms. Notable examples include Johnson & Johnson’s in-licensing of Legend Biotech’s BCMA CAR-T therapy; Biogen’s acquisition of rights to InnoCare Pharma’s next-generation BTK inhibitor for multiple sclerosis (MS); AbbVie’s in-licensing of I-Mab’s differentiated CD47 monoclonal antibody and bispecific antibody; and Zai Lab’s acquisition of rights to niraparib in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao.

These success stories hold significant implications for domestic biotech companies seeking breakthroughs. On one hand, they signify that these companies’ innovation capabilities and commercialization prowess have gained recognition, enabling a self-sustaining cycle of revenue generation and laying a solid foundation for subsequent R&D efforts. On the other hand, they can accelerate the global market entry of their proprietary new drugs while facilitating the introduction of foreign innovative therapies into China, thereby helping to overcome domestic limitations and maximize the value of innovative medicines.

It is foreseeable that, for a considerable period to come, leveraging cross-border business development (BD) to drive their own growth will remain a priority for many Chinese biotech companies. Therefore, it is essential to summarize the experiences and lessons learned by pioneers in the BD field, so as to provide insights and reflections for latecomers pursuing internationalization and for the innovative drug industry’s continued ascent.

To this end, DXY Insight Online Lecture Series, in collaboration with VBInsight, has specially invited Mr. Chen Rulai, Co-founder and COO of InnoLake Pharma, to deliver a talk themed “Cross-border Business Development: An Innate Gene of Biotech.” Drawing on real-world cases, he will distill the evolving trends and detailed processes of cross-border transactions for biotech companies, helping you gain a more thorough understanding of all aspects of overseas market expansion for biotechs.
