In January this year, nine departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission, jointly issued the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Pharmaceutical Industry” (hereinafter referred to as the “Plan”), which explicitly lists accelerating internationalization as one of its six specific objectives. The Plan points out that it is necessary to cultivate a group of world-renowned brands and foster large pharmaceutical enterprises with global R&D and production layouts and high proportions of international sales. It calls for actively responding to the new landscape of reshaping global pharmaceutical innovation, industrial, and supply chains; deepening international industrial cooperation; accelerating the cultivation of new competitive advantages; and integrating into the global innovation network and industrial system at a higher level. Such objectives are not born of blind confidence but rather stem from a rational assessment of the strength of China’s innovative pharmaceutical companies. As China’s healthcare and wellness industry continues to create value, it has embarked on global exploration of overseas markets.

June 14–18, 2022, The 6th Future Healthcare Top 100 ConferenceWith"China Story"Centered on this theme, we bring together the core forces of the industry, starting from indigenous innovation in China, connecting with an international perspective, and leveraging momentum to expand globally. We tell the story of how Chinese companies effectively communicate China’s narrative and voice on the global stage, driving transformation and innovation in the healthcare industry.

Unstoppable Domestic Substitution: Moving Beyond "Made in China" to "Intelligently Made in China"

Over the past several years, China’s medical industry has primarily pursued innovation through tracking and imitation. By following a pathway of introducing, digesting, absorbing, and re-innovating foreign technologies, the sector has continuously narrowed the gap with developed countries, achieving domestic growth and import substitution in certain areas. Nevertheless, overcoming critical technological bottlenecks remains a formidable challenge in many specialized fields.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s medical industry will further accelerate its development toward domestication, high-end positioning, and brand building. How enterprises adapt to the sweeping trends of informatization, intelligence, networking, and digitalization is a key reflection of their core competitiveness. Guided by national macro policies vigorously promoting innovative development in biomedicine, China has gradually transitioned from an initial follower in innovation to a leader. A cohort of local enterprises committed to independent innovation has emerged, steadily moving beyond “Made in China” toward “Intelligently Made in China.”

Cross-Border Expansion Is Timely: Stepping onto the Global Stage and Telling China’s Story Well

Amid recurring epidemic outbreaks, 2022 presented both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, with the successful global expansion of BeiGene’s zanubrutinib and Legend Biotech’s BCMA-targeted CAR-T therapy, ciltacabtagene autoleucel, the surge in Chinese clinical trials in 2022 began to translate into corresponding New Drug Applications (NDAs) submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, given the FDA’s stringent requirements for international multi-center clinical trials, the path for domestically developed innovative drugs to enter overseas markets remains arduous. On the other hand, the pandemic accelerated the global expansion of medical devices. According to statistics from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products, exports of medical devices accounted for 54.2% of China’s total medical product exports in 2021, representing half of the country’s medical product export trade for two consecutive years.

Behind the bustling wave of global expansion lies the active support of the state in building a multi-stakeholder, multi-dimensional framework for external publicity. For companies going global, the key lies in how to effectively tell China’s story and implement their internationalization strategies. So, for Chinese medical enterprises that are experiencing both rapid, unregulated growth and steadfast progress, what path will domestic pharmaceutical companies take in their future explorations?“How Should Companies Steer Their ‘Global Expansion’ Strategy?”The pharmaceutical companies that previously “went global,” either achieving success or encountering obstaclesWhat Are the Key Lessons Learned from Global Expansion? What Should an Innovation Pathway Structured from a Global Perspective Look Like?

In response to these issues, we are honored to have invited executives from RemeGen, Junshi Biosciences, X-Novo Therapeutics, Weimou Biotech, Zhongsheng Suyuan, Lepu Biopharma, Takeda, and other leading companies to share their insights at this Cloud Top 100 Conference.International Practices in New Drug Development and China’s Experience; Innovation and Globalization of Multi-Target Biologics; Strategic Transformation of China’s Biopharmaceutical Industry; AI- and Automation-Driven New Drug Development Amid the Pandemic; Digitalization Leading MedTech, Globalization Winning International Markets; Chinese Pharmaceutical Companies’ Innovative Path to Expanding into Southeast Asiasuch topics.
