With the rapid development of the socio-economy and the accelerating pace of life, consumption continues to upgrade, ushering in a period of rapid growth for commercial health insurance. Meanwhile, chronic diseases are becoming a major threat to people’s present and future health. Of the 58 million deaths worldwide in 2009, approximately 36 million were attributed to chronic diseases. As an important strategy and approach to addressing chronic diseases, health management is gaining increasing awareness and attention.
Against the backdrop of the “comprehensive, full-lifecycle health services” mandate outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan, higher demands and standards have been set for tertiary industry services such as health management and commercial health insurance. Policy focus has shifted upstream toward disease prevention, facilitating a transition from treatment to prevention, including for chronic diseases. The Healthy China 2030 Planning Outline explicitly identifies reducing premature mortality from major chronic diseases as a key indicator, calling for the implementation of comprehensive chronic disease prevention and control strategies to achieve health management for chronic diseases across the entire population and throughout the full life cycle by 2030. Currently, China’s basic medical insurance funds are under financial pressure. Under the Healthy China strategy, the state encourages the development of commercial health insurance and is gradually increasing the proportion of health management services within health insurance offerings.
With the improvement of living standards and the trend of population aging, people are paying increasing attention to personal health issues, driving the gradual development and expansion of the health industry. Since 2016, China has entered a phase of vigorous development in health management. Following the release of the “Outline of the Healthy China 2030 Plan,” the state has explicitly supported health management evaluation services, marking the formal entry of China’s health management industry into a growth stage. As commercial insurance serves as the primary payer for health management services, the surge in the health insurance sector will bring more opportunities and innovative models to digital health management.
