Fifth (2022) China Medical Devices Design & Entrepreneurship Competition: A Once-a-Year Opportunity for Innovation

Jun 17, 2022 09:30 CST Updated 09:30

China’s medical device industry started late, and its investment scale lags significantly behind that of global medical device giants. As a result, the industry is characterized by being “large but not strong.” To overcome this situation, China has increasingly emphasized innovation in the medical device sector in recent years. Particularly in the field of high-end medical devices, China has proposed “domestic substitution” and introduced an approval pathway for innovative medical devices. Subsequently, a series of policies supporting medical device innovation have been implemented, indicating that China has elevated medical device innovation to an unprecedented level.

Driven by strong national incentives and supportive policies, the scale of China’s medical device market has continued to expand in recent years. However, this growth has yielded mixed outcomes for different players, as reflected in their divergent development strategies. Some companies have adopted a gradual approach, iterating from low-end to high-end products with steady progress; others have focused on domestic substitution, intensifying R&D and market exploration for products previously monopolized by imports; while still others are dedicated to advancing locally innovative medical devices. China boasts a vast pool of physicians and a large population base. Leveraging the extensive clinical experience of its doctors helps clarify the actual product needs of the public to a certain extent. Nevertheless, the journey from R&D of innovative products to commercialization cannot be achieved overnight. It requires indispensable elements such as effective promotional channels, capital participation, and product incubation. Since its inception in 2018, the China Medical Device Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has attracted significant attention within the industry. The successful holding of the first four editions has propelled numerous outstanding projects into the spotlight.

Under the guidance of the Department of Social Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the China National Center for Biotechnology Development, the China Medical Device Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has been successfully held for four consecutive sessions. It has now been incorporated into the “Innovation China” series of activities. The four sessions attracted 283, 607, 665, and 831 innovative medical device projects from both domestic and international sources, respectively. A total of more than 2,000 enterprises, innovation service providers, and investment institutions participated in the competition and its supporting activities. The events drew 40,000 onsite attendees and received on-site guidance from leaders of various ministries and commissions, academicians, and over one hundred authoritative experts from regulatory bodies and the industry. Across the four finals, a total of 253 projects were awarded first, second, and third prizes. Follow-up statistics conducted six months after the competitions revealed that the total financing amount exceeded RMB 5.2 billion. Some projects subsequently received research grants from ministries and commissions, provincial and municipal governments, and the military, as well as various other awards from different competitions. The holding of the competition has effectively promoted the growth of innovative medical device projects and the transformation of their achievements, earning widespread acclaim due to the significant benefits gained by all participating parties.

Follow-up on the Competition I: Xianjian Health Becomes the First Chinese-Made Temporary Pacemaker Approved for Market Launch

April 2021, the first domestically produced case in ChinaTemporaryHeartPacingdevice approved for market launch, thisProductIt is an innovative product manufactured by Shenzhen Lifetech Medical Electronics Co., Ltd. As the first domestically produced temporary cardiac pacemaker in China, this device can be used not only for temporary pacing in patients with bradycardia but also as a pacing system analyzer to evaluate pacing systems, including measurements of impedance, pacing threshold, and sensing amplitude. The market launch of this product will improve hospital equipment utilization efficiency, reduce equipment usage costs, and promote the application of pacing therapy in China.

As early as February 28, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing and sale in the United States of an external temporary pacemaker independently developed by Shenzhen LifeTech HeartCare Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of LifeTech Scientific (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. The FDA approval for this temporary pacemaker signifies that LifeTech HeartCare’s technology and product standards meet all requirements of the North American market, which adheres to the highest international standards. The project previously won First Prize in the Weihai Optoelectromechanical Group during the semi-finals of the 2019 China Medical Device Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and received an Excellence Award in the Kunshan Optoelectromechanical Group during the finals of the same competition.
