At 3:00 PM every day, the Rehabilitation Robot IoT Hub at Shanghai Yongci Rehabilitation Hospital, part of INKON Life (hereinafter referred to as “Yongci Hospital”), is at its busiest.

Dozens of rehabilitation patients, accompanied by family members or caregivers, are undergoing rehabilitation training at the IoT Port: some are “team-playing computer games,” others are performing arithmetic exercises on machines, while still others are walking “freely” with wearable mechanical devices. Inside various intelligent rehabilitation robotic systems for the upper limbs, knee joints, ankle joints, and other areas, these patients’ behavioral data are being transmitted in real time to the backend, helping therapists tailor training plans accordingly.

It is worth mentioning that in this room with 50remaining intelligent rehabilitation devices, with a capacity of 50Equipped in the rehabilitation training therapy room for patients,3a team of professional therapists can meet the medical needs of all patients, facilitating a shift in rehabilitation from labor-intensive to technology-intensive models and overcoming the shortage of specialized personnel in traditional rehabilitation services. This achievement is attributable to Yongci Hospital, under INKON Life, for its relentless exploration of smart rehabilitation pathways. Currently, Yongci Hospital has been progressively developed into“An IoT-based medical ecosystem platform specializing in critical care rehabilitation.”

2017In [Year], Haier Group formally entered the big health industry, with Yongci Hospital serving as the pioneer. After five years of development, empowered by the “broad specialty” capabilities of Haier’s big health ecosystem brand, Yingkang Yisheng, Yongci Hospital has successfully created a “The new brand identity of the “Rehabilitation University Discipline Center” offers a novel rehabilitation model for medical professionals, patients, and the rehabilitation industry.

What mission does Yongci Hospital, as the “pathfinder” of INKON Life in the rehabilitation industry, undertake? What strategic layout has INKON Life established in the rehabilitation sector? As a participant in privately run healthcare, how does INKON Life contribute to the development of rehabilitation medicine? This article will address these questions.

Establish a Comprehensive Rehabilitation University Center and Improve the Three-Tier Rehabilitation Medical System

INKON Life’s entry into the rehabilitation sector is a strategic decision made after comprehensive consideration of multiple factors, including the development stage and market potential of the rehabilitation industry.

From the demand side, the accelerating aging of the population, combined with injury and disability caused by chronic diseases, heightened public awareness of rehabilitation, and the state’s emphasis on and fiscal support for the rehabilitation needs of persons with disabilities, are the primary drivers behind the sustained growth in rehabilitation demand.

On the supply side, China faces a severe shortage of rehabilitation medicine departments in general hospitals, specialized rehabilitation hospitals, and rehabilitation beds. This has resulted in a prolonged state of instability for a systematic and comprehensive rehabilitation healthcare delivery system. Rehabilitation medical institutions lack advanced rehabilitation facilities and are generally characterized by small scale, fragmented resources, and limited service offerings.

To this end, the Chinese government has continuously strengthened policy support for rehabilitation medicine and is actively exploring the establishment of a three-tier rehabilitation medical service system. This includes encouraging social capital to play its role as “an important component of China’s healthcare system,” thereby boosting the enthusiasm of non-governmental entities to invest in rehabilitation medical institutions.

In this context,INKON Life has proposed the concept of a “Comprehensive Rehabilitation Discipline Center,” using Yongci Hospital as a practical model. By drawing extensively on international experience in rehabilitation system development, it aims to refine a three-tier rehabilitation medical system with clear structure and well-defined functions, thereby meeting rehabilitation needs across different levels and stages of treatment. This approach facilitates timely and seamless triage and referral for patients, promoting the advancement of China’s rehabilitation sector.

Yongci Hospital is a non-profit specialized rehabilitation hospital approved by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, established in accordance with the standards for tertiary rehabilitation hospitals and integrating clinical care with rehabilitation. Adhering to its positioning as “a robust complement to public hospitals,” Yongci Hospital has established itself as a platform-based hospital featuring critical care rehabilitation, providing patients with an integrated model of “medical treatment + nursing + rehabilitation.”

Driven by the dual advantages of rigid demand and policy support, the rehabilitation sector—a blue ocean market—has seen fierce competition. Nevertheless, Yongci Hospital has achieved “Yongci Speed” by leveraging three key strengths: talent pipeline development, operational models, and management strategies.

Yongci Hospital adheres to a dual-track approach in cultivating both “specialized experts” and “versatile professionals.” By leveraging internal development and external recruitment mechanisms, it has established a standardized talent pipeline program. In its operations, the hospital upholds the philosophy of “patient-centered care,” ensuring that “medical and nursing services revolve around patients.” This approach helps healthcare professionals enhance user experience value while achieving iterative self-improvement. Furthermore, by utilizing digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and the internet, the hospital achieves efficient data integration and processing, thereby improving management efficiency and capabilities.

After five years of development, Yongci Hospital’s “Comprehensive Rehabilitation Discipline Center” has entered a harvest phase. It has not only established leading departments such as the Critical Care Rehabilitation Center, the Ventilator Weaning Center, the International Cooperation Center for Disorders of Consciousness, and the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center, but also joined forces with the ecosystem resources of INKON Life to establish China’s first Internet of Things (IoT) Port for Rehabilitation Robots. In 2021, Yongci Hospital was selected for the inaugural “Top 50 Private Rehabilitation Medical Institutions in China” list and received the Award for Leading Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital.

After helping Yongci Hospital build robust specialized capabilities in rehabilitation, INKON Life leveraged its “1+N+n+H” ecosystem network to establish a three-tier collaborative rehabilitation referral mechanism that creates complementary advantages among Yongci Hospital, tertiary general hospitals within the INKON Life system, and community satellite hospitals.

Patients can complete acute-phase rehabilitation at tertiary general hospitals or Yongci Hospital. Once their condition stabilizes, they can undergo post-acute rehabilitation at Yongci Hospital. When hospitalization is no longer required, patients can be transferred to Yingkang Nursing Home or other community hospitals for long-term care. Currently, Yongci Hospital is also leveraging digital technologies such as the Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT) to explore long-term care services in home settings, thereby further enhancing its closed-loop rehabilitation service system.

Based on this, we can analyze the strategic logic of INKON Life’s layout in the rehabilitation industry:Leveraging Yongci Hospital’s strengths in critical care rehabilitation as a regional hub, and drawing on the resources of the INKON Life platform, we assist in building a tiered rehabilitation talent pipeline and establishing clear operational models and management strategies to strengthen and expand the hospital’s leading disciplines, such as critical care rehabilitation. Once Yongci Hospital has developed sustainable rehabilitation service capabilities, INKON Life replicates its flagship specialties across China through its “1+N+n+H” ecosystem network, thereby benefiting a broader patient population.

Building an IoT-Enabled Rehabilitation Hospital Model to Achieve “Smart” Development in Rehabilitation

With the maturation of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), the internet, and artificial intelligence, the healthcare industry is also ushering in an iterative upgrade toward informatization and intelligentization. As a vital component of the healthcare sector, rehabilitation is inevitably poised to become a key area for intensive development and application of digital technologies.

To innovate rehabilitation service models, promote technological innovation and intelligent creation in rehabilitation, and enable intelligent rehabilitation devices and rehabilitation robotics technologies to meet the needs of more patients,INKON Life has proposed the “IoT-Enabled Rehabilitation Hospital Model,” leveraging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) to advance rehabilitation medicine toward higher levels of intelligence and sophistication, with significant achievements already realized at Yongci Hospital.

In the era of the Internet of Everything, Yongci Hospital has established China’s first IoT hub for rehabilitation robots, the first ventilator weaning center, and the first Chinese clinical base of the Disorders of Consciousness Research Association, carving out an innovative path in critical care rehabilitation that is uniquely “Yongci.”

In terms of human connectivity, Yongci Hospital has targeted the pain point of the traditional model where “patients revolve around medical staff” by adopting an integrated “patient-provider unity” approach. It has developed five major smart scenarios—Smart Ward, Smart Diagnosis and Treatment, Smart Weaning, Smart Settlement, and Smart Rehabilitation—while adhering to the principles of “serving people, empowering people, adding value to people, and fostering mutual trust.” This has enabled a normalized healthcare service model in which “medical staff revolve around patients.”

Overall, INKON Life and Yongci Hospital have achieved mutual success.INKON Life is forYongci Hospital delivers capabilities in digital healthcare, the development of comprehensive rehabilitation disciplines, supply chain management, and integrated operations, helping to establish its specialized advantages in rehabilitation. As Yongci Hospital’s comprehensive rehabilitation center continues to improve, it will also create synergies with other hospitals within the INKON Life ecosystem, promoting the decentralization and accessibility of top-tier domestic critical care rehabilitation medical resources and service capabilities across INKON Life’s “1+N” network.

Next, INKON Life will leverage Yongci Hospital as a pivotal node to comprehensively build an IoT-enabled rehabilitation medical ecosystem network. Horizontally, it will replicate and implement Yongci Hospital’s critical care rehabilitation model in other hospitals through online and offline channels. Vertically, guided by its “Hospital to Home” strategic layout, it will extend rehabilitation services into home settings, striving to create a holistic rehabilitation system with participation from all stakeholders across society.

Benefiting from the innovative application of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and the internet, INKON Life has accelerated its development in the rehabilitation industry. However, rehabilitation is a field that requires long-term commitment. The phased achievements currently attained by INKON Life may, from another perspective, serve as the foundation for its next round of innovation in the future.

The green pine stands firm in the cold; the vast blue sea grows ever clearer. Time will not disappoint anyone who works diligently and deeply in the rehabilitation industry.
