In recent years, as population aging intensifies and market demand surges in the post-pandemic era, public health awareness has risen rapidly, drawing increasing attention to medical devices. The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a catalyst reshaping the global landscape of the medical device industry. Coupled with the significant impact of centralized procurement and intense domestic competition (“involution”) among Chinese medical device manufacturers, expanding into overseas markets has become a key strategic breakthrough for many Chinese companies to unlock their second growth curve.

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China and Zhongcheng Shuke, China’s total foreign trade in medical devices reached $134.94 billion in 2021, a year-on-year decrease of 18.8%. Among this, imports amounted to $50.21 billion, representing an 18.4% year-on-year increase, while exports totaled $84.73 billion, marking a 31.5% decline. The import and export growth rate of IVD reagents ranked first. Taking the IVD market as an example, fierce domestic competition makes expanding overseas highly significant for promoting industrial structure upgrading and enhancing the competitiveness and influence of China’s IVD industry. Following the completion of domestic substitution and innovation, niche sectors such as vascular intervention and neurointervention are also rapidly entering the global stage and implementing overseas expansion strategies. To continuously align with international standards in the future, Chinese local enterprises must firmly base themselves on innovative research and development to achieve sustainable long-term global expansion.

Hosted by VB100, VCBeat, Eggshell Research Institute, and the International Cooperation and Exchange Center of the National Health Commission2022 China Medical Device Global Expansion Conference, to be held at the Beijing Science and Technology Hall on September 16–17, 2022. Focusing on the export of medical devices and centered on “trade relations,” the conference features three thematic pillars—“Rising Winds,” “Breaking Waves,” and “Leading the Way.” It aims to establish a globally influential brand conference based in China, integrating international trade cooperation, pharmaceutical and medical device industry exchanges, institutional technical exchanges, and corporate product exhibitions within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Adopting a global perspective, this conference will delve into topics such as the innovative upgrading of medical devices, brand internationalization, cross-border trade, and global strategic layout. It aims to foster exchange and cooperation among domestic innovative medical device enterprises, overseas distributors, and representatives from national embassies and consulates. By focusing on policy coordination, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds, the event will leverage the synergistic effects of its “conference” and “exhibition” components to jointly advance the global expansion of China’s medical device industry.

The two-day Main Forum of the China Medical Device Global Expansion Conference will trace the origins of global expansion from a forward-looking perspective and explore pathways to break through current challenges. “Going global” is influenced by both domestic and international environments, including policy directions, market demand, and foreign trade conditions. The “Rising Winds” thematic segment will focus on topics such as policies, demand, conditions, and intellectual property rights. It plans to invite guests including policy experts, representatives from foreign trade departments, scientists, and clinical experts to share insights on why the trend of Chinese medical devices “going global” is gaining momentum.

Expanding overseas is not something medical enterprises can achieve overnight. Although going global can help many companies break through the profit “ceiling” and access a broader international market, firms must carefully plan their expansion strategies, build capable teams, and thoroughly assess local macroeconomic conditions. The “business sea” also has its “hidden reefs”; opportunities and challenges coexist in overseas expansion. It requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders across the industry chain to enable Chinese medical device companies to “go global together.” The “Breaking Waves” themed session plans to invite distinguished guests, including investment experts, CRO firms, cross-border service providers, and technical specialists, to explore pathways that empower medical device enterprises to successfully navigate their way into global markets.

As China’s international influence continues to rise and global demand for medical devices keeps growing, the country boasts enormous market potential. As a major exporter of medical devices, China has expanded its reach to more than 200 countries and regions worldwide, covering developed economies in Europe and North America as well as developing markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. At this pivotal moment, many enterprises are establishing themselves domestically while pursuing global opportunities, leading the industry at the forefront. On the second day of the conference, the “Navigation” thematic session will invite entrepreneurial leaders from benchmark companies that have successfully gone global across various sub-sectors of the medical device industry to share their proven strategies for international expansion.

Concurrently, the conference will host industrial ecosystem collaboration activities with partners, including the International Medical Device Supply Chain Forum, closed-door government-enterprise meetings, and business matchmaking sessions. From a supply chain perspective, renowned experts and scholars will be invited to provide authoritative insights into the export processes of medical devices. The closed-door meetings will precisely match high-quality enterprises with government needs, building a bridge for government-enterprise ecological cooperation.

The 2022 Beijing Health Conference, held concurrently and at the same venue as this conference, is themed “Advancing High-Quality Development in Health.” It plans to invite leaders from relevant ministries and commissions, representatives of international organizations and foreign embassies in China, academicians and think tank experts, as well as industry representatives, to jointly discuss how the health sector can achieve innovative, coordinated, green, open, and shared high-quality development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
