Setting Sail for Global Markets, Embracing the Future: 2022 Medical Device Innovation Case Collection Campaign

As “innovation” has become an instinct ingrained in the DNA of corporate growth, and as “domestic substitution” is gradually being realized across key niche sectors, expanding overseas operations and establishing a global footprint have clearly emerged as the new mission for local medical device enterprises in the new era. On the world map depicting the fierce competition within the medical device industry, Chinese companies are increasingly visible in many of the most strategic arenas of international competition.

“Going Global”: A New Perspective for Observing the Development of Medical Device Companies.

In 2021, as pandemic control became normalized, China’s medical device export trade data declined compared to 2020, with export value reaching USD 87.429 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 31.54%. Nevertheless, new trends emerged in terms of product categories, export models, and destination markets. By analyzing trade data and examining practical case studies of Chinese medical device companies expanding overseas, we aim to profile the innovative forces driving this global expansion wave from multiple industry perspectives, thereby seeking insights relevant to the current landscape.

On the occasion of the 2022 China Medical Device Global Expansion Conference, VCBeat, VB100, and VCBeat Research Institute jointly launched “2022 Call for Innovative Cases of Chinese Medical Device Companies Going Global”, open to innovative medical device companies in China with overseas market layouts and organizations providing services for medical devices going global.

This case solicitation and selection initiative is grounded in the ecosystem of medical device global expansion, evaluating entries from three perspectives: innovative products for international markets, strategic layout for global expansion, and enabling services for overseas growth, to select and recognize“20“Best Innovative Product for Overseas Expansion of Medical Devices in 2022,” “Best Strategic Layout Case for Overseas Expansion of Medical Devices in 2022,” “Best Service Empowerment Case for Overseas Expansion of Medical Devices in 2022””, with a focus on evaluating the innovations, outstanding advantages, achievements, role division and contributions of all participating parties, as well as the significance of the case for medical device global expansion, based on the overseas cases submitted by the applicant units within the review year.

1. Innovative products submitted for selection must meet the definition and classification of medical devices. This includes, but is not limited to, products related to: high-value consumables (cardiovascular, orthopedic, ophthalmic, dental, neurological, blood purification, non-vascular interventional, etc.); low-value consumables (medical sanitary materials and dressings, anesthesia consumables, disinfection consumables, injection and puncture consumables, etc.); medical equipment (imaging, patient monitoring, radiotherapy, physical and chemical analysis, dialysis, laser, surgical, rehabilitation, etc.); home-use medical devices (blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, ventilators, oxygen concentrators, etc.); and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) instruments, equipment, and reagents (clinical chemistry diagnostics, immunoassays, molecular diagnostics, POCT, microbiological diagnostics, etc.).

Innovative products featured in submitted cases must have obtained certification or market access qualifications for relevant overseas markets, including but not limited to U.S. FDA registration, EU CE marking, UK MHRA certification, Australian TGA registration, Canadian CMDCAS registration, Japanese PMDA registration, and South Korean KFDA registration.

1. The eligible entities for case selection must be medical device enterprises registered within China. Comprehensive healthcare groups whose business segments include the research and development, manufacturing, and sales of medical devices are also eligible to participate.

2. Eligible entities for case selection must be planning or have already implemented overseas expansion. This includes, but is not limited to, exporting medical device products, registering overseas subsidiaries, acquiring overseas companies within the relevant ecosystem, and establishing overseas R&D centers.

Eligible entities for the case selection must provide services related to various stages and processes of medical device internationalization, empowering medical device companies in expanding their overseas businesses. These services include, but are not limited to: global market compliance and market access consulting, registration, and certification services for medical device exporters (e.g., GMP facility planning/design review, quality system guidance, clinical CRO services, product market entry registration, etc.); overseas sales agency services (e.g., payment settlement and logistics, supply and sales, warehouse management, localized infrastructure, online sales platforms, etc.); and export trade services (e.g., exhibition participation, translation, trade risk alerts, personnel training, etc.).

2. The entities participating in the case selection may be independent entities (with a single participating unit applying independently) or joint entities (with multiple participating units applying jointly).

The 2022 China Medical Device Export Conference, co-hosted by VB100, VCBeat, Eggshell Research Institute, and the International Cooperation and Exchange Center of the National Health Commission, will be held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing from August 7 to August 9, 2022.
