On April 20, Medtronic announced that it had completed the acquisition of CathWorks, a developer of artificial intelligence cardiac technology.

In February this year, Medtronic announced the acquisition of CathWorks in a deal worth up to $585 million; CathWorks focuses on revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment model of coronary artery disease (CAD).

The cooperation between the two parties dates back to eight years ago. As early as 2018, Medtronic had already purchased a minority stake in CathWorks.

In 2022, Medtronic entered into a strategic partnership with this coronary artery disease technology company. According to the agreement, Medtronic committed to investing up to $75 million and immediately began co-promoting CathWorks' FFRangio system in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, where the product has already been commercially launched.

Developed by CathWorksFFRangio SystemCombining artificial intelligence with advanced computing science enables the rapid and reliable calculation of Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR, a diagnostic index used to assess the physiological impact of coronary artery stenosis) values through routine angiography (X-ray examination).

This technology is completely different from the traditional invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) detection method. Traditional detection requires the use of a pressure wire, induces vascular hyperemia through medication, and the measurement is limited to a single sensor point within the blood vessel.

Recently, CathWorks announced the results of a year-long clinical study, showing that the system's diagnostic and therapeutic effects are not inferior to wire-based physiological detection technology. In a clinical trial involving more than 1,900 patients, the FFRangio system also demonstrated advantages in optimizing the efficiency of medical resource utilization and reducing operation time.

CathWorks CEO Ramin Mousavi said, "Medtronic's acquisition of CathWorks will help the company boldly reshape the future of cardiovascular healthcare, ushering in a new era of cardiovascular diagnostics and patient outcomes."

Jason Weidman, Senior Vice President and President of Medtronic's Coronary & Renal Denervation business, stated: "With the innovative CathWorks system, Medtronic’s interventional cardiology product portfolio has been significantly strengthened. This system provides physicians with data-driven diagnostic and therapeutic support, enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. Leveraging Medtronic's global presence, the addition of CathWorks will make its transformative FFRangio technology more accessible to customers and patients worldwide."

The acquisition of CathWorks also places Medtronic at the forefront of digital transformation in the cardiovascular field, empowering it to develop next-generation diagnosis and treatment solutions for doctors and patients.
