On July 25, the Shandong Internet Traditional Chinese Medicine (Herbal Materials) Trading Center launched a dedicated section for authentic medicinal herbs on its official website, with Sichuan Ophiopogon japonicus becoming the first “direct-from-origin” variety available for trading. On the first day of the section’s launch, all 150 metric tons of Sichuan Ophiopogon japonicus listed were immediately purchased. By July 28, sales in the dedicated section had surpassed 400 metric tons.

On July 22, the Shandong Internet Traditional Chinese Medicine (Herbal Materials) Trading Center officially released the “Quality Grade Standards for Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbal Commodities” and issued the construction guidelines for the “Origin Storage Quality Assurance Warehouse” (hereinafter referred to as the “Origin Warehouse”). By leveraging the complementary roles of quality grading standards and origin warehouses, the center aims to initiate quality control of traditional Chinese medicine herbs at the source, thereby establishing a comprehensive quality control and traceability system.

Taking Chuan Maidong (Ophiopogon japonicus from Sichuan) as an example, the use of paclobutrazol during cultivation leads to a reduction in the content of active constituents; therefore, safety specifications for paclobutrazol have been incorporated into the quality standards for Chuan Maidong. Meanwhile, the Shandong Internet Traditional Chinese Medicine (Herbal Materials) Trading Center has established a origin warehouse for Chuan Maidong in Santai County, Mianyang, Sichuan—known as the “Hometown of Chinese Maidong.” By implementing standardized management of ecological planting practices at cultivation bases, the center aims to further enhance the product quality of Chuan Maidong.

According to the head of operations at the Shandong Internet Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Materials Trading Center, to ensure quality assurance, grade enhancement, and stable supply in the TCM materials sector, all TCM materials listed in the center’s Authentic Herbs Zone strictly comply with the “Standard for Specifications and Grades of TCM Material Commodities.” Meanwhile, the center is in negotiations with multiple authentic herb-producing regions to advance the development of “origin warehouses,” which will facilitate the listing of a wider variety of TCM materials in the Authentic Herbs Zone.
