Over the past three decades of development in China’s private dental sector, Dr. Guo Pingchuan has undoubtedly been a significant witness and participant.

As early as the 1980s, he began performing dental implant procedures. As one of the first doctors in China to engage in dental implantology, he is also among the private-practice dentists with the longest tenure in this field in the country.

Not only that, but Guo Pingchuan also dared to be a pioneer. In 1993, when the wave of commercial entrepreneurship swept across China, he resolutely ventured into the business world and subsequently established Aichi Dental, the first Sino-foreign joint venture dental clinic in China approved by the Ministry of Health and the Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission. Under Guo Pingchuan’s leadership, Aichi Dental has maintained steady and healthy development, earning a strong reputation in Tianjin.

In 2017, to promote the further development of Aichi Oral Disease Clinic, Director Guo Pingchuan led the clinic to join MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, becoming a business partner. At that time, MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP became the first private partner of the world’s most authoritative DNV certification body in China’s dental industry, thanks to its high-standard, high-requirement, and high-quality dental medical services. The news of the strategic cooperation between the two parties instantly became a major event of concern in the industry.

After five years of development, what new breakthroughs has Aichi Dental achieved? What new insights and reflections does President Guo Pingchuan have? How will the future of the private dental industry evolve? In light of these questions, VCBeat held an in-depth dialogue with President Guo Pingchuan in early autumn on the occasion of the launch of his new book, *Guo Pingchuan: An Explorer of China’s Private Dental Sector*.

01: A Firsthand Journey Through the Exploration of Private Dental Care, with Innovation as Its Foundation

In 1973, Guo Pingchuan, at the age of only 18, was already practicing in the Department of Stomatology.

In that era, medical resources and pharmaceutical supplies were extremely scarce. Consequently, it was very difficult for patients with oral diseases to receive treatment.“Patients had to start queuing at 4 a.m. to obtain registration numbers, with a daily cap of 20 slots; after securing a number, they would then wait for their consultation,” Guo Pingchuan, the hospital director, told VCBeat. At that time, the public primarily sought relief from toothaches and basic denture services. “These needs, which seem very simple by today’s standards, were difficult to meet effectively back then.”

Fortunately, with China’s reform and opening-up, the domestic dental industry has gradually aligned with international standards. The introduction of an increasing number of new technologies and equipment into the country has ushered in a period of significant growth for the dental sector. However, at this stage, technology and equipment alone are insufficient; what is also needed are individuals who are open to embracing new developments and committed to innovation.

Guo Pingchuan is precisely such an individual. In 1987, by attending the inaugural “Study Course on Dental Implant Biomaterials” hosted by the School of Stomatology at West China University of Medical Sciences, he was formally introduced to dental implantation—a novel technology that was little known in China at the time. In 1991, he placed his first dental implant, thereby becoming one of the earliest pioneers in the field of dental implantology in China. To date, Dr. Guo Pingchuan has cumulatively placed nearly 30,000 dental implants.

“My aspiration remains to introduce and implement more new technologies,” stated President Guo Pingchuan. In state-owned hospitals, procuring medical equipment is no easy feat, as the approval process is cumbersome and time-consuming. Driven by this simple yet profound motivation, Mr. Guo ventured into the private sector in 1993. After navigating numerous challenges, he founded Aichi Dental in 1997—the first Sino-foreign joint venture dental clinic in China approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Driven by excellent service and a patient-centered philosophy, Aichi Dental has achieved steady growth. In 2006–2007, its annual revenue reached nearly RMB 30 million, ranking it among the leading private dental institutions in Tianjin.

Yet even amid the hectic pace of his entrepreneurial ventures, President Guo Pingchuan has continued to dare to be a pioneer, relentlessly pursuing innovation and exploration. For example, in 2006, the papers “Application of Dental Implant Restoration Technology in Edentulous Patients” and “Application of Immediate Implantation and Immediate Restoration in Clinical Dentistry,” published by President Guo Pingchuan, filled a gap in the introduction of new technologies within the Tianjin health system.

In that year, President Guo Pingchuan was also appointed as the sole standing committee member from the private sector on the Implantology Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association, and as Vice Chairman of the Implantology Professional Committee of the Tianjin Stomatological Association.

“Participating in the work of the Chinese Stomatological Association has been the most memorable experience of my career,” stated President Guo Pingchuan. He noted that his involvement with the Association enabled him to engage with leading domestic and international stomatology experts, facilitating learning and professional exchange. “These experiences have significantly enhanced my professional competence.”

Over the years, President Guo Pingchuan has continued to actively participate in numerous international and domestic academic exchange conferences, with continuous learning and innovation becoming distinctive hallmarks of his professional identity.

02: Continuous Breakthroughs and Growth, Embarking on a New Journey with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP

During the second decade from 2007 to 2017, Aichi Dental achieved significant growth under the leadership of Dean Guo Pingchuan.

However, by chance, Dean Guo Pingchuan learned that a doctor at a certain clinic earned an annual income of up to one million yuan, far exceeding the annual salary of dentists at Aichi Oral Disease Clinic. “It was then that I realized the private dental industry had undergone significant changes, and that new concepts and practices needed to be learned and understood,” stated Dean Guo Pingchuan. To this end, he visited and conducted research in multiple regions.

Through a unique opportunity, President Guo Pingchuan connected with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP and, after multiple rounds of discussions, reached a strategic cooperation agreement.

“Ms. Julia Zhu, the founder of MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, is a dentist herself; she has a deep understanding of dentists’ needs as well as management,” said Dr. Guo Pingchuan in an interview with VCBeat. Under the strategic cooperation agreement at that time, MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP granted Beijing Aichi Oral Disease Clinic significant autonomy. First, the clinic retained its original name, “Aichi Oral.” Second, the founding team retained a portion of the equity, with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP holding 51% and the original team holding 49%. In other words, under MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP’s business partner model, dentist-owners did not exit but instead became managers of the new entity.

The results are encouraging.During the five-year partnership with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, Beijing Aichi Oral Disease Clinic has achieved rapid development, doubling its business volume and reaching an annual turnover of approximately RMB 50 million.

“After partnering with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, our overall management and business systems have seen significant improvement,” stated President Guo Pingchuan. For instance, all five dental care service centers under Beijing Aichi Oral Disease Clinic have obtained DNV certification. Furthermore, the clinic has shifted away from its previous approach of neglecting marketing, instead strengthening the management and service for existing patients while enhancing new customer retention.

More importantly, MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP has also provided significant empowerment to Beijing Aichi Oral Disease Clinic in terms of informatization and digital-intelligent transformation.Beijing Aichi Oral Disease Clinic, leveraging the intelligent platform of MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, provides integrated value-added medical services encompassing disease prevention, risk prediction, personalized management, and patient engagement through data modeling and information analysis. Meanwhile, operations across various departments have become more streamlined, intelligent, and standardized, thereby reducing unnecessary time burdens on healthcare professionals and enabling better patient care.

“A major feature of the MEI WEI system is its independent research and development. We had previously developed information management software, but it was extremely challenging to implement. We also used some industry-specific software, but none were as comprehensive as the MEI WEI system. It is not merely focused on individual cases; rather, it encompasses all patient management and service information, as well as the entire process of delivering high-quality patient care. At its core, the system is designed around the goal of effectively treating patients’ oral diseases through comprehensive, end-to-end management,” stated Dr. Guo Pingchuan, President of the hospital.

Additionally,The fiercest competition in the dental industry is also a competition for talent. To help supplement and cultivate talent for all its dental brands, MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP has made a series of strategic arrangements.

“With the empowerment of MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, building a talent pipeline, particularly in attracting young professionals, has become much easier,” stated Dr. Guo Pingchuan. He noted that by implementing MEI WEI’s systematic training for new physicians, they can quickly become proficient and ready for practice, thereby preventing significant fluctuations in outpatient revenue due to staff turnover.

In addition,Over the past five years of integration, the management philosophies of Aichi Dental and MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP have increasingly converged. For example, adding physician assistant positions, enhancing effective and positive communication between doctors and patients, enriching various member activities, and providing more attentive postoperative care services for patients.

“The two most significant changes over the past five years are that Aichi Dental has implemented electronic medical record management and engaged young dentists in medical quality control management,” stated Dr. Guo Pingchuan, Director of Aichi Dental. “We are honored to partner with MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP, which has enabled Aichi Dental to achieve continuous breakthroughs and growth.”

03: Compassionate Care: Fostering the Growth of More Young Talents

Throughout Guo Pingchuan’s career, in addition to his diligent and conscientious work, he has been actively engaged in industry-related public welfare initiatives and committed to supporting the professional development of young dentists.

“As a member of the private dental sector, I have always maintained close ties with the academic community and have learned many standardized theoretical frameworks and professional knowledge from them.” Said Dean Guo Pingchuan, expressing his hope to serve as a guide and build a bridge for communication and exchange between the private dental sector and the academic community.

Not only that,President Guo Pingchuan is also actively promoting the development of outstanding young and middle-aged talents, strengthening the construction of disciplinary talent teams. For instance, President Guo Pingchuan and MEI WEI DENTAL GROUP plan to establish a special fund for outstanding young and middle-aged professionals to study abroad, sponsoring them to broaden their horizons and learn advanced technologies, thereby enhancing the technical level of domestic dental medical care.

Internally, President Guo Pingchuan plans to arrange corresponding management training for reserve candidates and young academic backbones within the hospital or department, in order to enhance their organizational capabilities and management proficiency.

“After years of effort, Aichi Oral’s talent development system has been progressively refined, establishing a robust talent pipeline. Professionals across various specialties are playing vital roles in the hospital’s development from their respective positions,” stated President Guo Pingchuan.

At the end of the interview,President Guo Pingchuan’s Message to Young and Middle-Aged Talents: Always Keep in Mind the “Two Qualities” Principle, Namely “Moral Integrity” and “Insight”“Virtue” refers to dentists upholding medical ethics and professional integrity, serving patients wholeheartedly; “Insight” refers to maintaining a passion for lifelong learning, continuously acquiring and supplementing new knowledge.

“Only with the continuous influx and growth of more outstanding young dentists will the oral healthcare industry continue to improve,” stated President Guo Pingchuan.

With a compassionate healer’s heart, Dr. Guo Pingchuan has personally experienced the thirty-year journey of exploration in China’s private dental sector, becoming both a key witness and an active participant. Today, thanks to his dedication and mentorship, a new generation of young professionals is rapidly emerging as the backbone driving the Chinese dental industry into its next thirty years.
