PharmaCircleMonitoring shows:On April 22, AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) announced that it would invest $1.4 billion to build a pharmaceutical manufacturing campus spanning 185 acres in Durham, North Carolina. This state-of-the-art campus will integrate advanced manufacturing technologies, laboratory technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI) to support the production of drugs in AbbVie's immunology, neuroscience, and oncology portfolios.
This is AbbVie's first major investment in North Carolina. The AbbVie Durham campus, located adjacent to the Research Triangle Park, was chosen primarily due to the region's excellent local talent pool and future expansion potential. Construction of the campus will begin this year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
AbbVie Chairman and CEO Robert A. Michael stated, "This investment in North Carolina represents a significant milestone for AbbVie, being the company's largest capital investment to date and marking our expansion into a new U.S. region for manufacturing. By developing this campus, we will further strengthen our ability to support future medical breakthroughs while creating new job opportunities and establishing long-term partnerships with the city of Durham and the state of North Carolina."
Over the next four years, AbbVie plans to hire 734 employees, covering positions such as engineers, researchers, production operators, and laboratory technicians. The construction of the campus will also create over 2,000 construction jobs, boosting local economic development.
This project is part of AbbVie's commitment to invest $100 billion in capital in R&D and production in the United States over the next decade. The first phase of construction will include a Small Volume Parenteral (SVP) drug production facility, next-generation laboratories, a warehousing center, administrative offices, and an employee health center, with reserved space adaptable to AbbVie’s continuously expanding R&D pipeline needs.
AbbVie's business covers all 50 states in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with approximately 29,000 employees in the United States, including over 6,000 employees across various manufacturing sites in the U.S.
