As a 15-year initiative (2016–2030), the China Brain Project has been elevated to the status of a national strategy in the 14th Five-Year Plan.

Among these, the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders represent a key application area of the “China Brain Project,” focusing on early diagnosis, development of intervention strategies, and drug discovery for major brain function impairments and neurodegenerative diseases such as autism, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease.

Meanwhile, China’s rehabilitation medicine sector has also entered a fast lane of development, with national emphasis placed on the specialization of rehabilitation disciplines and the construction of an “Internet +” home-based rehabilitation medical service system.

According to incomplete statistics, the total number of patients with major functional neurological disorders in China has exceeded 50 million, with the incidence rate rising year by year. The market for diagnosis and treatment of brain functional disorders is estimated to reach hundreds of billions of yuan. Meanwhile, the extremely high rates of disability, deformity, and mortality associated with these conditions impose a substantial social burden on families and the nation. Early diagnosis, early intervention, and early rehabilitation have therefore become top priorities.

However, in clinical practice, the development of such drugs and their therapeutic efficacy have been less than ideal. Therefore, the introduction of non-invasive transcranial electromagnetic technology for multi-scenario disease intervention has become the preferred option at present.

KANGBEI BIO (Luoyang Kangbei Bioengineering Co., Ltd.), established in 2001,It is the first manufacturer in China to develop and apply non-invasive electromagnetic therapy technology for the treatment of brain functional disorders.. The related product, the transcranial electromagnetic rehabilitation therapy device, was granted a national invention patent as early as 2006.

Currently, the product has been clinically applied in nearly 1,000 hospitals across more than 20 provinces in China, with positive feedback. It has achieved commercialized and serialized production and is widely used in hospitals and community clinics of various scales for the rehabilitative treatment of brain disorders.

New Leadership Brings New Vitality

In May 2018, KANGBEI BIO welcomed its new general manager, Wang Jinwei, marking the beginning of its upgrade and transformation journey.

Wang Jinwei graduated from the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Over the past two decades, he has been honed by multinational medical corporations such as Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, and Bard, eventually assuming key management positions. Taking the helm at KANGBEI BIO represents a transformation for both the company and Wang Jinwei himself.

“The transition from leading the sales department to managing the overall operations of a manufacturing enterprise is actually quite significant. Sales is merely one link in the chain for a manufacturing company. However, for such enterprises, it is essential to achieve an organic integration of quality control, technology, research and development (R&D), production, sales, and after-sales service. There are also more tedious, complex, and systematic management tasks to handle. Therefore, after taking over the company, I went through a settling-in period of about six months to gain a thorough understanding of both internal and external conditions,” said Wang Jinwei.

As an R&D and manufacturing enterprise, technology is the cornerstone of its sustained vitality. Wang Jinwei observed that while the company possessed substantial technological accumulation, it struggled to identify breakthroughs, and its number of invention patents needed improvement. Consequently, in 2019, the company added a new strategic initiative: to leverage its existing technologies to pinpoint areas for innovation.

Guided by a philosophy of continuous innovation, KANGBEI BIO has successfully secured two invention patents and more than 20 utility model patents, and has been recognized as a National High-Tech Enterprise. Building on this foundation, the company has established an industry-university-research collaboration with Henan University of Science and Technology, jointly participating in the Henan Provincial Key Scientific and Technological Project titled “Clinical Evaluation of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined with Electroencephalography.” The project has now been completed and certified.

Meanwhile, the company officially signed an agreement with Zhengzhou Muke at the China (Luoyang) Industrial Design Industry Technology Development Conference to upgrade the product’s aesthetic design.

During that period, Wang Jinwei also led the company in clarifying its new strategic positioning and development direction. After 20 years of quiet accumulation, KANGBEI BIO has since embraced a new identity: aspiring to become an influential, diversified healthcare industrial group in the field of brain function diagnosis and treatment, and has embarked on a journey of upgrading and transformation across three key dimensions.

1. Product Miniaturization: Supporting the Golden Period of Rehabilitation. Wang Jinwei told VCBeat that for 90% of patients with brain functional disorders, the primary rehabilitation setting after discharge is the home. However, during the first six months at home—a critical window for rehabilitation—they often lack access to scientifically proven and effective rehabilitation measures and treatment modalities.

Therefore, adhering to the philosophy of “if prevention is missed, do not miss the golden window for treatment,” KANGBEI BIO initiated the miniaturization R&D of transcranial electromagnetic therapy devices in 2019, completed product launch in 2020, and obtained the Class II medical device registration certificate in 2021.

This move has laid the foundation for KANGBEI BIO to achieve home-based brain function rehabilitation, expanded the application scenarios of its products, and enabled patients to receive sequential treatment, ensuring reliable therapeutic support during the critical window period.

Second: Transforming the sales model to empower more partners in supporting patient recoveryOver the past two decades, KANGBEI BIO has primarily operated as a direct-sales enterprise, a model that has consumed substantial human resources and energy. In light of changes in the market environment and external policies, transitioning to a commercial distribution channel model is essential to unleash vitality, leverage the support of capable partners, strengthen and expand the business, achieve win-win cooperation, and establish the brand image of Kangbei Zhongci.

To this end, in 2019, Wang Jinwei traveled across 20 provinces in China and engaged in partnership discussions with nearly one hundred distributors, laying the foundation for KANGBEI BIO’s development and transformation. To date, the company has partnered with more than 800 distributors, while an increasing number of customers are getting to know, understanding, and choosing KANGBEI BIO.

Third: Expansion of production lines to provide more high-quality products for rehabilitation patients.Looking at the present from the perspective of the future, if KANGBEI BIO aims to grow into a group-style enterprise, it must proactively lay out new business tracks on top of its existing business foundation and technological accumulation, so as to avoid commercial risks arising from reliance on a single product.

It is reported that, in addition to mastering transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) technologies, KANGBEI BIO has completed its technical reserves for sleep diagnostics, upgraded tES therapeutic technologies, an integrated in-hospital and out-of-hospital sequential treatment platform, a cognitive impairment diagnosis and treatment workstation, and therapeutic products for common conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, sleep disorders, migraine, and cerebral insufficiency.

Positioning Mid-to-High-End Magnetic Technology to Create a Multi-Functional Intelligent All-in-One Rehabilitation System

Transcranial electromagnetic therapy devices are indicated for brain functional disorders across three major demographic groups—children, adults, and the elderly—and span seven clinical departments: Pediatrics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Sleep Centers, Geriatrics, and Rehabilitation Medicine. Common indications include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), stroke, depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Currently, the most commonly used rehabilitation approaches for these conditions are pharmacotherapy, physical therapy, and behavioral therapy. In essence, physical therapy and behavioral therapy are largely symptomatic treatments. Since the actual pathological site of these diseases lies in the brain, there is a relative lack of etiological treatments that directly target the brain.

Over the past decade, with the in-depth development of brain science research and advancements in science and technology, etiologic treatment approaches have gradually matured, with invasive and non-invasive methods being the most common.

Invasive therapy requires implanting a neurostimulator into the brain and is commonly used for interventions in conditions such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. However, this treatment approach carries relatively high risks and can only be administered via surgical implantation, resulting in limited applicability.Non-invasive transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation, which modulates neuronal bioactivity through externally applied electric fields, has also been proven to be highly beneficial in the treatment of certain brain disorders, with its technology and applications becoming increasingly mature.

KANGBEI BIO asThe first domestic manufacturer to develop and apply non-invasive electromagnetic therapy technology for the treatment of brain functional disorders, based on magnetoelectric properties, market demand, and NMPA regulations (the safe value for magnetic field strength of products submitted for registration review of magnetic therapy products is 200 mT), successfully developed aSimultaneous stimulation of the brain and cerebellar regions using combined magnetic-electrical central intervention technology. Furthermore, through specialized technical methods, KANGBEI BIO’s transcranial electromagnetic field is maximally adjusted to 160 mT, achieving transcranial medium-to-high intensity magnetic technology, thereby making the product more effective and safer during treatment.

The Kangbei Bio Transcranial Electromagnetic Multifunctional Rehabilitation Therapy Device, designed based on medium-to-high intensity magnetic fields, delivers whole-brain stimulation to functional areas including the cerebral cortex (frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes) and the cerebellum, thereby establishing a closed-loop rehabilitation therapy system encompassing “central–peripheral–central” pathways. The combined magnetoelectric therapy offers enhanced treatment efficacy, greater safety during the therapeutic process, and broader applicability in terms of indications and target patient populations.

Over the years,KANGBEI has consistently pursued technological updates and product iterations, upgrading its transcranial electromagnetic rehabilitation therapy device from the original bulky button-operated model to a current intelligent four-in-one system. This has resulted in an auto-identifying smart transcranial electromagnetic rehabilitation therapy device that integrates four functions: transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) therapy (medium- and low-frequency therapy), and cervical neuromuscular electrical stimulation (dysphagia therapy).

Meanwhile, compared with strong magnetic therapy products, KANGBEI BIO’s transcranial electromagnetic multifunctional rehabilitation device features technologically improved natural coil cooling. This eliminates safety hazards to patients caused by coil heating and avoids the inherent costs of cooling systems required for strong magnetic equipment, thereby offering a significant advantage in product pricing.

Currently, Kangbei Bio’s transcranial electromagnetic multifunctional rehabilitation device is serving more than 1,000 medical institutions across China, providing treatment services to nearly 10,000 patients daily, with over 800 authorized distributors nationwide. The in-hospital market has always been the foundation of Kangbei Bio’s business, and the company’s next step is to actively expand into the out-of-hospital market.

Plan Before You Act: Drive Technological Integration, Build Product Portfolios

“As a manufacturing enterprise, our positioning is clear: to develop technologically innovative products, build KANGBEI BIO into a reputable industry brand, and provide comprehensive, meticulous, and timely after-sales service to clients at all levels. We remain unwavering in these three commitments,” said Wang Jinwei.

He stated that, since he had resolved toTo become a diversified healthcare industry group with significant influence in the field of brain function diagnosis and treatment, the company will focus on in-depth and extensive development for the diagnosis and treatment of brain functional disorders, promoting technological integration, product integration, and product portfolio optimization. In terms of market strategy, KANGBEI BIO will place greater emphasis on both the clinical and home-care markets for brain functional disorders, enabling more patients requiring neurological rehabilitation to achieve sequential treatment across in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Furthermore, against the backdrop of a sleep-disordered population exceeding 300 million, KANGBEI BIO is developing an integrated sleep diagnosis and treatment solution for sleep centers, undertaking informatization upgrades, and building a connectivity platform linking medical-grade and consumer-grade products. The transcranial electromagnetic multifunctional rehabilitation device can also be technologically integrated with digital therapeutics for cognitive function to enhance intervention efficacy. Meanwhile, KANGBEI BIO is upgrading its technologies and registering new products for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as cerebral insufficiency and migraine.

KANGBEI BIO has been striving to become a “Specialized, Refined, Differential, and Innovative” Little Giant enterprise and has already met the basic criteria for such designation. The company also successfully advanced to the finals of the “7th Tsinghua Alumni Triple Innovation Competition,” and has established in-depth collaborations with benchmark hospitals, including the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Science and Technology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan Province of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Henan Province of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital, and the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University.

It is reported that KANGBEI BIO has officially launched its first round of financing to fund product R&D, registration, and market operations.“KANGBEI BIO has always laid a solid foundation for its technical work. Once everything is in place, we can immediately initiate informatization construction and implement both our technologies and products. We expect to obtain five registration certificates within three years,” said Wang Jinwei.
