The innovation-driven Jiacheng Investment team sees:The new era of digital health, ushered in by biosensors, is unfolding.
Recently, the Jiacheng Investment team visited multiple laboratories at Harvard University, MIT, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. They learned that various sensors are creating new scenarios for health monitoring and management, with an increasingly diverse range of biomarkers being tracked. For instance, sleep patterns can be monitored through respiration to predict Parkinson’s disease; gait analysis can be used to monitor medication efficacy in Parkinson’s patients, thereby assisting physicians in precise dosing; patient body movements on hospital beds can be monitored to alert nurses to reposition patients, thus preventing pressure ulcers; and detailed three-dimensional reconstructions of cardiac structures and scar distribution can be generated prior to surgery, enabling more precise cardiac interventions.
Continuous data monitoring and real-time online surveillance have become the new starting point for digital health; cloud-based sensors, combined with artificial intelligence modeling and algorithms, have emerged as the greatest productivity driver in digital health; the miniaturization of medical and healthcare devices, along with their integration with consumer electronics, has become a new trend for next-generation digital health products. In China, such a trend is emerging.
According to a report released by PwC in 2021, the market size of China’s healthcare and wellness industry has reached RMB 13 trillion, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13%, making it the second-largest market globally. Many leading electronics technology companies have entered this sector. Since Apple launched the first-generation Apple Watch in 2014, wearable devices, represented by smartwatches, have gained increasing attention from various companies.
OPPO is one such example. In 2021, OPPO officially established its Health Laboratory, focusing on research in areas such as exercise health, cardiovascular health, sleep health, and mental health. Currently, it has formed strategic partnerships with multiple top-tier universities and medical institutions in China, carrying out more than 30 research projects across various fields including exercise health, cardiovascular health, sleep, sensors, and materials.
Dr. Zeng Zijing, as OPPO’s Vice President, President of the Health Business, and Head of the Health Lab, is responsible for building a health team comprising experts in health algorithms, sensors, data science, and biomedicine, thereby fostering a closed-loop OPPO health ecosystem.
Dr. Zijing Zeng returned to China in February 2021 to join OPPO as the Head of the Health Laboratory and was selected for the national “Innovative Talent” introduction program. Previously, he led the product design and R&D of Apple Watch sensors and other health-related products at Apple Inc., managing the R&D and engineering teams responsible for the development and manufacturing of health and fitness products. Prior to joining Apple, he worked at Thoratec (Abbott), where he was engaged in core R&D of heart pumps. Dr. Zeng has extensive long-term research experience in the health sector and is dedicated to the full-lifecycle development of consumer electronics and medical devices in this field. He possesses rich experience in leading scientific and engineering teams and is committed to innovation and commercialization in the health and medical technology sectors.
Dr. Zijing Zeng earned his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University and holds a Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Mechanics and Hemodynamics from the University of Pittsburgh.
