AI Innovation Intensifies, Propelling a New Leap in Pathological Diagnosis

As the “gold standard” for disease diagnosis, pathological diagnosis plays an irreplaceable role in determining the benign or malignant nature, staging, and classification of tumors by performing histological examination and making judgments on patient tissue specimens obtained from biopsies or surgical resections, thereby providing a critical basis for guiding clinical selection of treatment regimens for cancer patients.

As the incidence of cancer continues to rise in China, pathological diagnosis faces significant challenges. Building upon the automation and digitalization of pathology, AI technology has identified new breakthroughs to continuously enhance both the efficiency and quality of pathological diagnosis, while also driving the more complex diagnostic capabilities required for personalized medicine.

It is reported that Roche Diagnostics has innovatively launched a digital pathology AI ecosystem platform, which fully integrates the core strengths of its existing pathology diagnostic products and adds an innovative AI engine. This creates an end-to-end comprehensive solution ranging from automated staining and digital scanning to intelligent analysis, comprehensively empowering the continuous development of pathology diagnostics.

Automation as the Foundation

High-quality tissue section staining is a critical cornerstone for achieving precise pathological diagnosis. Over the years, significant progress has been made in the automation of pathology laboratories, laying the foundation for standardized and regulated management of pathological diagnosis. Roche Diagnostics’ automated staining platforms cover routine staining, special staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and research-based IHC, providing pathology laboratories with high-quality stained slides. At this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), the newly launched BenchMark ULTRA PLUS platform made its debut in China, further empowering the enhancement of standardized and regulated management in pathology laboratories.

Digital Acceleration

The rapid advancement of pathology has ushered pathological diagnosis into a new stage of development. Digitizing stained slides is the most fundamental and critical step in digital pathology. By converting stained slides into high-resolution, whole-slide digital images using digital pathology scanning systems, pathologists can manage, share, and analyze these images in real time, thereby further enhancing efficiency prior to slide review. Meanwhile, this technology assists pathologists in optimizing remote consultations and deepening analytical capabilities, laying a crucial foundation for the intelligent transformation of the field.

Smart Breakthrough

Traditional pathological slide review is highly time- and labor-intensive, leaving pathologists with insufficient time to repeatedly analyze and count cells in every histological section. Emerging computer algorithms, represented by artificial intelligence (AI), effectively address this limitation, driving a significant leap forward in pathological diagnosis and offering broad prospects for development. Leveraging rich datasets derived from vast amounts of digital stained slides, along with the powerful computational and deep learning capabilities of computers, AI-assisted diagnostic software enables intelligent pathological slide review. It facilitates objective, quantitative interpretation of tumor cell content and assists pathologists in making rapid and accurate diagnoses. Consequently, it plays a crucial role in alleviating shortages of medical resources and enhancing the accessibility of high-quality healthcare.

Building on this foundation, Roche Diagnostics has innovatively launched an open AI ecosystem platform for digital pathology diagnosis. This platform integrates the dual advantages of standardized stained slides from Roche Diagnostics’ automated staining systems and high-quality digital scanning, while incorporating AI-based pathology applications to achieve seamless integration of laboratory hardware with intelligent algorithms. It provides pathologists with powerful tools for the intelligent management and in-depth analysis of digital stained slides. Leveraging technological innovation, the platform delivers more efficient and precise pathological diagnostic results, thereby providing more effective clinical information for precision medication and personalized precision medicine, ultimately benefiting patients.
