VCBeat learned at the earliest opportunity,Shanghai Hantong Medical Technology Co., Ltd.(hereinafter referred to asHantong Medical) CompletedTens of millions in angel roundFinancing. This round of financing was led byTongchuang WeiyeLead investor,Haicaid Venture CapitalYanxitang Fundand others will participate jointly. The funds raised will be used to build an interventional ultrasound R&D platform, as well as for the research and production of related products.

The newly released "Chinese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Hypertension" have lowered the diagnostic threshold for hypertension in Chinese adults from ≥140/90 mmHg to ≥130/80 mmHg. Consequently, the number of individuals with hypertension in China has increased from nearly 300 million to approximately 500 million. Among them, nearly 50 million patients suffer from resistant hypertension—defined as blood pressure that remains above target despite the use of at least three antihypertensive agents—or hypertension comorbid with chronic kidney disease. The blood pressure control rate among Chinese hypertensive patients is only 16.8%.

For most patients with hypertension, the primary approaches to stabilizing blood pressure are lifestyle interventions and antihypertensive pharmacotherapy; however, both require lifelong adherence and compliance. The emergence of renal denervation (RDN) has broken through this therapeutic bottleneck by controlling blood pressure through ablation of the sympathetic nerves surrounding the renal arteries, a mechanism of action that has been substantiated by extensive clinical data. Currently, various energy platforms for RDN devices are competing in both domestic and international markets. Ultrasound energy offers clinical advantages, including deeper tissue penetration, broader 360-degree coverage, and minimal damage to the vascular intima, making it considered a superior energy source for RDN. Medtronic and ReCor Medical have already submitted their registration dossiers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), with approval expected in 2023.

Hantong Medical focuses on active interventional products, particularly in the field of vascular interventional ultrasound, and has launchedFully Independently Developed Ultrasonic Energy Platform. The first product is designed for renal artery ultrasound ablation therapy for hypertension, encompassing multiple core technologies including the main console, algorithms, catheters, and ultrasound transducers. For instance, regarding the core high-frequency, high-power ultrasound transducer, the team has completed independent design and development that fully replaces imported counterparts, granting significant autonomy and cost advantages. Through continuous exploration, technical breakthroughs have been achieved in functions such as ultra-high-frequency acoustic wave tracking and high-power output stability. Aligned with clinical needs, a platform product has been designed featuring a smaller size, more stable energy delivery, smarter operation, and superior ablation efficacy.

The company has also laid outNext-Generation Ultrasound Energy Platform, which will combine ablation therapy with ultrasonic diagnosis to achieve the clinical advantages of targeted ablation and real-time monitoring of ablation effects. As a versatile technology for denervation ablation, the ultrasound energy platform can be extended to treat various conditions, including pulmonary hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), offering substantial market potential.

Meanwhile, Hantong Medical is also actively expanding its strategic layout.Pulmonary Embolism MarketPulmonary embolism is one of the three major fatal cardiovascular diseases. Currently, there is a gap in the field of interventional surgical devices for pulmonary embolism in China. The intravascular ultrasound-assisted thrombolytic system and catheter developed by Hantong Medical, when used in combination with microbubbles, reduce the dosage of thrombolytic drugs by more than 95%. This approach features an extremely low rate of thrombus recurrence. Additionally, the smaller-sized catheter is easier to operate, causes no blood loss, and does not damage the pulmonary arteries, bringing new hope to patients with pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Zhao Wanjin, Founder and CEO of Hantong Medicalstated: “We extend our sincere gratitude to the investors for their trust and strong support. Hantong Medical will continue to advance independent innovation in core technologies and products, accelerate the clinical translation of our offerings, and benefit patients at the earliest possible date. Looking ahead, we will further align our product portfolio with clinical needs, while building active technology platforms—such as energy-based systems and consumables—focused on the pan-vascular field, thereby creating a comprehensive suite of interventional diagnostic and therapeutic products and driving continuous innovation.”

Hantong Medical in the Eyes of Investors

Xi Yanbin, Partner at Cowin Capital Beijing Healthcare FundStating: “RDN products are among the few where domestic and international competitors start from the same baseline, boasting a substantial patient population and significant market potential. Ultrasound-based URDN has already demonstrated considerable clinical value. However, interventional ultrasound involves a series of core technologies requiring breakthroughs—including acoustics, materials, hardware and software, and algorithms—posing high technical barriers. As a leading domestic interventional ultrasound platform company, Hantong Medical’s founding team has accumulated years of technical expertise in this field and is poised to achieve breakthroughs in multiple areas, such as renal artery ultrasound ablation, potentially surpassing international giants. Furthermore, as a platform technology, ultrasound energy can be expanded into broader clinical domains and integrated with diagnostic applications, creating substantial value for society and patients.”

Zhai Jingbo, Partner at Haimaide Venture Capitalstated: “We are highly optimistic about the founding team’s combined R&D and sales capabilities, particularly given that the founders are former classmates with serial entrepreneurial experience. Hantong Medical was established and incubated at the Yanxitang Incubator, where the founding team demonstrated exceptional execution, rapidly overcoming numerous technical challenges and finalizing the basic product design. We will continue to incubate and support outstanding entrepreneurs, looking forward to seeing Hantong drive continuous innovation in the RDN market—a sector valued at tens of billions—and achieve catch-up growth and eventual leadership.”
