What would a health and wellness complex with a total investment of RMB 2.5 billion, a construction land area of 236 mu, and a total floor area of 150,000 square meters look like?
Yaohe Health City is a health and wellness complex. It is China’s first pan-naturopathic smart wellness industrial platform, located in Shenxianju (Tianmu Mountain), a national 5A-level tourist attraction and the scenic inspiration for Li Bai’s “spiritual journey.” Leveraging an integrated approach of “natural environment + naturopathy + high-tech solutions,” the complex delivers premium, precision wellness services—including medical care, wellness support, health tourism, and smart health management—to individuals seeking high-quality health maintenance, those in suboptimal health, patients with chronic diseases, and those with medically challenging conditions.

“Against the backdrop of rising public health awareness and successive national policies guiding and promoting industry development, integrated health and wellness complexes have gained market favor. However, many existing so-called integrated health and wellness complexes feature designs that are detached from actual market demands. What Yaohe Health is building is an integrated industrial platform that combines five key elements: medical care, elderly care, rehabilitation, tourism, and smart technology,” said Liu Gang, Executive Director and President of Yaohe Health.
How has the health and wellness sector developed in recent years?
According to the “2022–2028 China Health and Wellness Industry Market Research Analysis and Development Scale Forecast Report” released by Zhiyan Consulting, with the accelerating aging of the domestic population, heightened health awareness among residents, and the continuous expansion of supply in the health and wellness sector, China’s market consumption demand for the health and wellness industry is projected to reach approximately RMB 18 trillion by 2030.
According to relevant data, China’s elderly population is projected to peak at 487 million by 2050. Furthermore, as the aging of Chinese society intensifies and disease patterns and dietary structures shift, the prevalence of chronic diseases among the elderly has reached 75.23%, with the demographic affected by these conditions trending increasingly younger.
Meanwhile, the preferences of patients and consumers have shifted from critical care treatment to diversified health and wellness needs, including physical examinations, recuperation, anti-aging, chronic disease management, rehabilitation, and mental healing.
However, as conventional medicine currently emphasizes treatment after disease onset while placing insufficient emphasis on prevention and rehabilitation, it fails to adequately meet the needs of patients and the general public in these areas. Meanwhile, the development of health and wellness projects in China still faces certain dilemmas.
According to Liu Gang, there are currently five main development models for health and wellness projects in China: First, large-scale health towns that provide full-lifecycle services to urban residents, with the construction of a pharmaceutical industrial system at the core, encompassing an educational and research system, a pharmaceutical technology system, a health financial services system, a health industry production system, a convalescence and rehabilitation service system, and an elderly leisure and vacation system. Second, large-scale health and cultural tourism complexes driven by the dual engines of the big health industry and the tourism and vacation industry. Third, large-scale health industrial parks characterized by medical services, developed under the guidance of three core functions: medical education, R&D, and disease treatment. Fourth, demonstration zones for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) tourism. Fifth, elderly-friendly communities built on the foundation of favorable regional ecological environments, adopting a model of symbiosis between elderly care communities and urban communities.
Development models are “diverse,” yet they suffer from issues such as insufficient medical-care support and the separation of medical and elderly care services. For instance, some health and wellness complexes, with investments amounting to billions of yuan and covering thousands of mu of land, feature comprehensive facilities and diverse business formats but fail to prioritize the integration of medical and elderly care services. Some health and wellness complexes merely consolidate elderly housing, custodial care facilities, nursing homes, and retirement communities, placing excessive emphasis on the concept of elderly care. Although certain projects offer a dazzling array of entertainment, dining, accommodation, shopping, vacation, and commercial services, they lack core health and wellness functions and can only be regarded as cultural tourism projects.
In this context, Yaohe Health has launched the “Yaohe Health Model,” aiming to create a comprehensive health and wellness complex that truly integrates medical care, elderly care, rehabilitation, tourism, and smart technology.
The “1+N” dual-wheel drive model is the strategic layout of Yaohe Health. Here, “1” refers to the smart health and elderly care complex based in Shenxianju, namely the Yaohe Health City.
Yaohe Health City features a Medical Service Center, a Wellness and Elderly Care Service Center, and a Lifestyle Service Center. The Medical Service Center refers to Yaohe General Hospital, which houses departments including physical examination, inpatient care, internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), otolaryngology and ophthalmology, medical imaging, clinical laboratory, and emergency care. Its primary function is to provide health check-ups and medical services to members of Yaohe Health.

This also means thatYaohe Health has been involved in members' wellness services since the self-examination phase. In the interview, Liu Gang revealed the underlying reasons to VCBeat.
““We aim to create a one-stop wellness and healthcare complex.”Liu Gang explained, “After members check in at Yaohe Health City, they can undergo a medical examination in the morning and receive their report by the afternoon.”“Establishing an in-house health examination center not only enables Yaohe Health to obtain first-hand physical health data of its members, gain accurate insights into their true health status, and provide critical support for customizing personalized wellness programs, but also shortens the preparatory phase (i.e., the period from moving into the Health City to formally commencing wellness services), thereby accelerating members’ access to formal wellness care.”

Furthermore,Yaohe Health has also partnered with international regenerative medicine institutions to implement Australian stem cell technologies at Yaohe Health City General Hospital. The newly established Yaohe Shenxianju Stem Cell Bank has received joint approval from the National Health Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Development and Reform Commission to conduct clinical research and applications of stem cells.

To date, Yao and Shenxianju Stem Cell Bank have secured more than ten patented technologies in the field of stem cell research and translation. Furthermore, Yao Health has joined the Global Cord Blood Alliance, becoming one of its founding members in China.
