Recently, the “New Cornerstone Investigator Program,” one of the largest philanthropic initiatives in China funding basic scientific research with social capital, officially announced its first cohort of grantees. Fifty-eight scientists from the fields of mathematics and physical sciences, as well as biology and medical sciences, were selected as the inaugural New Cornerstone Investigators, including 28 researchers in the field of biology and medical sciences.

It is reported that the “New Cornerstone Investigator Program” is a new type of basic research funding initiative led by Shi Yigong and initiated by Tencent. Focusing on original innovation, encouraging free exploration, and characterized by its public-welfare nature, the program operates under the guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology, with scientists taking the lead, Tencent providing funding, and the “New Cornerstone Science Foundation” managing it independently.
This initiative aims to support creative scientists in conducting exploratory and high-risk basic research, with the expectation that they will identify key scientific questions, pioneer new frontiers in their disciplines, and drive original breakthroughs. The program strictly adheres to the principle of “scientist-led” governance and has established a Scientific Committee as the decision-making body for talent selection. Dr. Shi Yigong, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Westlake University, serves as Chair of the Scientific Committee.
According to public information, Tencent plans to invest RMB 10 billion over the next decade to support scientists working full-time in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao in conducting basic research and achieving “from 0 to 1” pioneering innovations. The funding amounts are: up to RMB 5 million per person per year for experimental research, and up to RMB 3 million per person per year for theoretical research, with continuous funding for five years. Upon successful evaluation after the funding period, recipients may qualify for renewed support.
