Recently, *Nature Communications* published an article on a novel cancer treatment modality—sonodynamic therapy, sparking considerable discussion in the academic community. In China, there is also a company established in 2007—Guangzhou Yisi Bioengineering Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Yisi Bio”), keeping a low profile while focusing on sonodynamic therapy for malignant tumors, and has been diligently working in this field for over a decade.

Seizing this opportunity, VCBeat conducted an exclusive interview with Dr. Li Qing, founder of Yisi Bio, to discuss sonodynamic therapy and the company’s development.

Sonodynamic Therapy: A Non-Toxic, Non-Invasive, Low-Side-Effect, Systemic Natural Cancer Therapy

Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT) is a novel cancer treatment modality developed over the past two decades. It leverages the non-invasive nature and superior tissue penetration of ultrasound to activate sonosensitizers, generating singlet oxygen that disrupts mitochondrial structure. This induces both necrosis and apoptosis, exerting a dual anticancer effect that achieves precise tumor ablation while sparing normal cells.

Pioneering Systemic Ultrasound Therapy Device for the Systemic Treatment of Cancer

Yisi Biotech’s sonodynamic therapy (SDT) technology for the treatment of malignant tumors is developed bySonodynamic Therapy, Sonodynamic Acoustic Pool, Tissue-Targeted SonosensitizersComposed of three parts of patented technology, this therapeutic approach is named SoSDT.

Based on more than a decade of technical research and clinical observations, Yisi Biotech has independently developed an innovative sonodynamic therapy device.Class II Medical Device Certificate for the World’s First Systemic Ultrasound Therapy System, Approved by the Drug Administration Authorities of Guangdong Province and Hunan Province

On October 20, 2021, Yisi Biotechnology, in collaboration with its research team, published a research paper titled “An ultrasound-driven immune-boosting molecular machine for systemic tumor suppression” in Science Advances. The study was the first globally to elucidate that the sonodynamic therapy molecular machine DYSP-C34 can specifically accumulate at tumor sites and exert cytotoxic effects and enhance intrinsic immunity upon activation by low-frequency ultrasound.

Yisi Bio’s research team published related findings in *Science Advances*.

The sonodynamic therapy molecular machine DYSP-C34 utilizes low-intensity ultrasound irradiation at tumor sites enriched with sonosensitizers to activate the sonosensitizers, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and alter the tumor microenvironment, thereby inducing tumor necrosis and apoptosis without causing damage to normal cells.

Years of research on this project have resulted in the grant of invention patents in multiple countries and regions, including China and the United States. The project has received support from provincial major scientific research programs and industry-academia-research collaboration funds, and has been honored with awards for scientific and technological progress.

Furthermore, as a green and natural therapy, low-frequency ultrasound offers the unique advantage of systemic, synchronized treatment for immune enhancement, soft tissue injuries, and pain relief.

Yisi Bio’s systemic ultrasound therapeutic device not only treats tumors but, leveraging the unique properties of ultrasound and its systemic nature, can also be extended to a broader range of medical scenarios and indications.

Debut at Arab Health 2023 in Dubai, Expanding into the International Market

Yisi Biotech has currently established collaborations with select hospitals both domestically and internationally, and is progressively initiating preclinical regulatory filing work.

In terms of market expansion, to enable the SoSDT cancer therapy technology to serve cancer patients sooner and more rapidly, Yisi Biotech will prioritize deployment in countries and regions such as East Asia, North America, and Europe, where there is regulatory support and a widespread, in-depth awareness of translational medicine concepts in natural therapies.

It is reported that several medical institutions from Germany, Switzerland, and Australia have reached preliminary cooperation intentions with Yisi Bio. To further expand into the European market, a subsidiary of Yisi Bio made its debut at Arab Health 2023, the world’s second-largest medical device exhibition held in Dubai, showcasing a new ultrasound system that constitutes a key component of its sonodynamic therapy platform. The exhibit attracted significant attention from distributors and medical institutions across the Middle East and Europe, with multiple relevant organizations expressing interest in collaboration. Capitalizing on the high profile gained at the Dubai exhibition, the company has decided to participate in Germany’s MEDICA, the world’s largest medical trade fair known as the “barometer of the healthcare industry,” in November 2023.
